Positions Guide

This guide includes information for the positions of Chief Medical Officer and Xenobiologist.

Chief Medical Officer

Simming

This is a guide on how to successfully sim the position of CMO on a Federation Starship.

The Chief Medical Officer is the person responsible for all things medical that goes on aboard a starship during missions. This could be a large role in missions that involves natural disasters, battles, and any other scenario in which people on your ship or aliens get wounded. The Federation is a system of many different worlds. This means that medical officers frequently well versed in other cultures because they are used to dealing with patients of other species.

In these situations you will mostly be located in your sickbay but you can also provide medical care on the battlefield, on alien worlds or on other locations on your vessel. You do not need to know correct medical terms although knowing what you talk about in some degree is helpful. Simming however involves your imagination and that goes for medical roles too. Invent medicines or tools as you need them and especially with aliens you can't go wrong with physiology because you can make it up as you go. Medical Tricorders can be used to diagnose problems. Surgery is designed to be as non-invasive. Most minor (non-life threatening) conditions can be fixed by accelerating the healing process and most illnesses can be handled by medication that is injected with hyposprays.

A CMO will always make his patients a top priority and this gives you opportunity to make for interesting story lines. You could treat an enemy even if your crew objects or are hesitant to take an alien aboard, you can keep crew in sickbay for medical reasons even if they don't want to etc. Be careful though not to abuse this, keeping the CEO in sickbay while your captain desperately needs him might cause friction, and keeping someone in sickbay too long will make that characters simming dull. Always check with either another player and/or your captain as to how far you can go.

A log or record of your crew's medical history can be helpful in determining future treatment. These logs may include out of Sim treatments and experiments, as well as supporting information of in Sim occurrences.

A CMO will often be the person who stresses morality and ethics in staff meetings, pointing out if actions go against humanitarian concerns.

Now, there may also be missions in which there are no scores of wounded people, like in a diplomatic mission or during quiet times before and after missions. This doesn't mean that your character cannot post anymore. You can post about your other duties in sickbay, do research or treat a non-role-playing character (that is someone not played by another player but rather a character you make up and use until you don't need them anymore). you can also treat one of the regular player's characters for minor things like a cut or a broken bone but you might want to inform with that player first. Remember never to kill a player's character, or have them too severely wounded, without that player's permission. NPC characters however can be killed on your operating table at will.

There is one final peculiarity with the role of CMO and that is the fact that you outrank even your captain on medical issues. If your captain is unfit to carry out his duties for medical reasons you have the power to relieve him of command. This could make for very interesting story lines but again, be sure to discuss it with your captain first as he may not want to go in that direction. If he agrees however, you could collaborate with your captain to make an interesting plot.

Having said all that and there still isn't a medical thing you can post about for whatever reason, remember that even the ship's doctor is a person, meaning you can post about anything that happens to you outside your duties. You can post about spending time in the holodeck doing whatever recreation your character likes, you can interact socially with other characters outside your duties as CMO or you can post about your personal live, a past experience you dream about, dealing with a friend or relative. Being a doctor does not limit you to medical posts, but these are your priorities should the story line require it. You can't be on the holodeck for instance while your shipmates are rescuing scores of people hurt in an earthquake on some alien world.

Have fun with your character and don't hesitate to move the story along.

Xenobiologist

Xenobiology is the study of alien biology. A good Medical officer should be ready to handle injuries of non-human or even non-humanoid races at any time. The best Xenobiologists will be experts in foreign culture as well as their medical requirements. They might also be required to do research to help solve medical or other problems that might be occuring. They can also be a good candidate for away missions in places where the culture is unknown since they might be expected to understand it slightly better than other officers without their background

Major Alien physiological differences

Vulcans:

Humanoid race native to planet Vulcan. Because their planet has a higher gravity than Earth, and its atmosphere is thinner, Vulcans in an Earth-normal environment demonstrate greater physical strength and more acute hearing than humans. You will find their heart where your liver is. Plus, when pricked, expect green to come out and not red. The intensity of the Vulcan sun caused the Vulcans to evolve a secondary eyelid to protect retina. Though sometimes its best to stand back, when injured, Vulcans concentrate their strength, blood, and antibodies onto the injured organs in a type of self-induced hypnosis. Pon farr - Reoccurring Vulcan condition that naturally occurs every seven years of their adult life, resulting the need to return to their home planet to mate. Symptoms, include, not eating or sleeping, and sometimes violent sexual behavior and irrationality.

Klingons:

The Klingon body incorporates multiple redundancies for nearly all vital bodily functions. This characteristic, known as "brak'lul", gives Klingon warriors enormous resiliency in battle. There are a number of distinguishing features, however. The most notable is that Klingons have a large bony ridged patterned forehead, with a central ridge that begins at the tip if the nose and follows the centerline of the body over the top of the head, and down to the base of the spine.

Internally, there are a number of differences between Klingons and Humans, including a large number of secondary backups for biological systems. Even theneuronal sheathing of the Klingon has redundant layers, which make not only for faster reflexes and movements, but contribute to the resistance of the Klingon physique to beam stunners. They have a large, 8 chambered heart, two livers, 23 ribs, double lines neural pia matter, a backup synaptic system, and even a small, auxiliary brain at the base of their spinal column, protected by the pelvic girdle. Klingons have no tear ducts, and their blood is a lavender-colored fluid.

Ullians:

Humanoid race of telepaths, characterized by skin involutions in the temporal area of their skulls. Though Ullians are able to read the minds of many other species, they themselves are unreadable to certain other telepathic species, particularly Betazoids.

Trill:

A joined species comprised of a humanoid host and a small vermiform symbiont that resides in an internal abdominal pocket of the host body. Most of the personality and memories of the Trill reside in the symbionts, which are extremely long-lived, although the host also contributes personality traits to the joined life-form. Upon death of the host body, a Trill symbiont can be transplanted into another host. Once joined, the host and symbiant become biologically interdependent, and after 93 hours, neither can survive without the other. Trill hands are naturally cold.

Ferengi:

Careful where you look, you will find they have an unusual four-lobed brain. Betazoids cannot read Ferengi minds because of this.

Betazoid:

Race of humanoid telepaths from the planet Betazed. The normal gestation {carrying of young in the womb between conception and birth} of a betazoid is ten months.

Talarians:

Humanoid race characterized by a distinctive hairless enlargement of the coronal area of the skull. Talarian society was rigid patriarchal and encouraged warrior like customs. Careful how you treat them, it could be taken wrongly.

Bajoran:

Race of humanoids from the planet Bajor. The normal gestation {carrying of young in the womb between conception and birth} of a Bajoran is less than five months. They vascularize quickly, during pregnancy mother and baby are linked together by a complex network of blood vessels. One of the most common side effects of pregnancy is sneezing.
