You may ask, how? does this portfolio relate to Jules Friederich?? Well, I could respond with "well, it's no relative of mine." But honestly, I am not the most perfect of writers in Ms. Harray?s period 4 English class, nor any of her classes I?m sure. I have been an unusual student, learning came in spite of myself. I would like to be a better writer, I know that I am pleased at times by the way I can craft words and ideas, but I lack certain skills to be efficiently proud. So this portfolio is about what I have accomplished, what I enjoyed exploring as a writer and what I might some day realize as the foundation of all my future writings.

So back to the relative question-- these writings were all English class assignments based on required reading materials, therefore the subjects and topics were not freely of my choosing. I think it is important to recognize this fact and to understand that these selections are only relevant to a very specific time and place in my life. In my opinion these writings do not reveal any great personal insight or artist talent. I believe that I made progress in understanding the process of writing and my appreciation of the craft has grown.

A metaphor that could apply is that of an architect who has a great affection for structural design and pursues knowledge of construction, physics, form, function, environment and art (all pertaining to his beloved subject) but is only provided with the means to utilize exact and precise plans that are formulated to have a prescribed outcome. This architect yearns to be free of established restraints and to have the freedom of choice to build what, where, how and when he desires. I can identify with this architect. I really enjoy reading a well-written book, article, essay, opinion, comic, and/or poem. I read a lot. I find the use of language, like music, fascinating and I delight in the discovery of new ideas and in the recognition of others. I am not, however, comfortable with the forced, conventional analysis of literature. I do understand the virtue of good self-expression, but there are so many ways I can express my thoughts besides English class lessons.

I am grateful for all the instruction and the dedication of my teachers. It seems evident they are passionate about what they do (everyone should be so lucky). Perhaps, I could have produced more or better quality writing. But here I present what I did in my last year of high school, a few samples as asked for in order to graduate. Now if you ask me to present my best schoolwork, I'll show you my Calculus and Biology scores.
