| New Interview
2:42 P.M. - Alien13UFO |
Yet another interview with Dan Cermack, producer of Renegade. This time, the interviewer is Action Vault! Heres a bit of it:
Action Vault: How would you describe Renegade's mission types in contrast to the ones from the RTS titles? Does the action genre offer some flexibility in mission design not feasible or possible in past projects?
Dan Cermak: All of the missions and objectives in Renegade require some strategy to accomplish. Every action requires thought as to how it will impact you later in the game. For example, taking out Nod base defenses and guard stations will allow reinforcements to land, but will also alert the entire Nod base to your presence.
I can't comment on our future C&C products, but I will tell you the franchise is alive and well, and we will be taking it in entirely new directions that will surprise even the most hard-core gamers.

Dan's weekly update! 6:40 A.M. - Alien13UFO |
If ya
haven't already seen it, here it is:
Hello everyone,
Guess it's been an interesting
week for everyone, ship date announced and beta test set up.
Things continue to progress, in single player we are focused
on one last pass at the exterior terrains, looking for places
where the AI units and the player might need a little extra cover.
I don't expect much in the way of changes but I want to be sure
that the AI has enough cover points to make it interesting for the
commandos out there. After that we will take a final pass at
lighting the levels and we will be locked on the terrains. From
the design side of single player we continue to work on the bugs
and tweak with the balance a bit. We have a couple of leader
"Boss" characters that have some pretty special moves and attacks,
makes for some very intense fights. We have to make sure you guys
can win them somehow.... Multiple play continues to polish up
nicely. We added new base and character status keys, cool to see
the health of your base and the enemy base at a key******. The
game is getting very addictive, in fact we normally have 2
sessions a day to check out new base layouts or changes in
interface, etc and we have been getting more and more people from
marketing, audio, PR playing because it really provides a
different experience. I canceled an afternoon session to focus on
a build and did I hear about it.... Most memorable battle this
week was when I bought a Flame tank, watched it drop off on the
airfield just as two mammoth tanks came around the corner at the
entrace to the base. I hopped in and charged, fortunately the
Brothers had already done some damage and there were a few
engineers on the spot to repair me. My tactic was simple, get up
close fast, I killed the first one quickly (his damage was in the
red so it was easy), I then rammed the second one broadside and
because of the angle and the close combat he was unable to get a
good shot on me. I hosed him down with flames until he popped. I
think we lost that battle but it was a grand time.
Well
back to the grind He also had this to say:
Favorite test moment last night: PowerPuff has just
successfully snuck into the GDI base and planted some C4 in the
GDI barracks. On his way out, he notices a fresh Medium Tank
coming out of the Weapons Factory, with no one around. He runs
over and jumps in. Steve, the player who just bought the tank,
comes running out, to find someone in his tank. Not noticing that
there is a NOD player in the tank, he writes a message to the
team, telling the player in his tank to get out. PowerPuff
promptly runs Steve over and procedes to pound the Weapons Factory
into oblivion. And this...
How hard is it to infiltrate? It really depends on a
lot of factors. -Are the base defenses still working? -Is
the enemy looking for you? -Is the game radar set to see only
your team or all?
In general, it is difficult. Stealth
soldiers help. Also, if you have a large assault, say 8 players at
once in several vehicles, you can usually get lost in the shuffle
or at least get enough time to plant some C4.

Beta Info, and new fansite of the week! 9:00 A.M. - Alien13UFO |
First
things first, Devinoch has revealed what the info about the beta
forums. Here is what he had to say:
Remind me to kill you all for posting in the Beta
boards. Okay, so now the boards are locked down and closed up,
like they were supposed to be before (missed a few buttons, I
think). Here's a little bit of info. There will be a very small
test in the near future, with a much larger test to follow several
weeks after. As I said before, do not send me email asking if you
can be in the test. Do not make posts asking if you can be in the
test. The small group of testers for the first test have been
picked, but not yet notified (so, basically, we've picked you --
we just haven't told you we've picked you yet) and no one else
will be added to that test. The test several weeks from now will
most likely have a registration page, but details about that will
be forthcoming.
BTW, I catch anyone posting the beta
forums again who isn't a beta tester, there'll be hell to pay.
Shame on me for posting on the beta forum :( Anyway,
the invitations have been sent out for the closed beta test, and I
didn't get one, and nobody has come out to say they have gotten one,
yet.
In other news, Congrats go out to new Renegade Fansite
of the Week, Planet CNC,
who've been tending to the Command & Conquer community for a
long time! As usual, they get a new Renegade MP3, called "Ammo
Clip". I haven't gotten it yet, but hear its good! Also, that is the
last of the MP3's westwood is releasing, so I guess they will be
giving something else away for the next fansite of the week.

Be-A-Renegade.com and another interview! 4:45 P.M. - Con1scrip |
Hey every1,
long time no see. Anywho, theres a new site out called Be-A-Renegade.com. Here's
the scoop,Ever want to spank a supermodel? Take a Porsche for a
test-drive and not come back for a few days? Crash your parents'
dinner party with nothing on but a necktie? Parachute into Anna
Kournikova's jacuzzi with two bottles of St. Ides and a pair of
handcuffs? Hey, we can relate. That's why we created Be-A-Renegade.com, a
website devoted to covering all the things that gamers do when
they're not gaming - in an edgy, irreverent and sometimes outrageous
manner, launched today. This lifestyle site features news,
commentary, reviews, and a heavy dose of pop culture-based humor.
It's all served up the way gamers like it - in a nose-thumbing,
smart-alecky manner. Go check it out!!

Tools of the Trade Continues! 2:45 P.M. - Alien13UFO |
Here's an
image and short description of one of the vehicles, weapons or
characters that our ever-lovin' commando comes in contact with out
on the battlefield. This week we're highlighting the GDI Engineer.
Check back here often as we continue the series.
 Description:
Engineers play a crucial role in the GDI war effort. Enlisted
right out of college, they are often deployed on the frontlines to
perform particularly hazardous functions such as disarming
explosives and sabotaging enemy structures. Without the burden of
a machine gun or other heavy weapon, engineers are free to carry a
full load of explosive devices. Perhaps their most important task
is the repairing of friendly vehicles and structures with standard
issue 'Gizmo' repair guns. Complex, expensive vehicles benefit
greatly from this type of battlefield support. It is not uncommon
to see legions of engineers trailing in the dusty wake of a
rolling fleet of Mammoth tanks. Let's hope they do
stealth tanks next :) |

Renegade Release Date!!! 6:33 P.M. - Alien13UFO
|
Here's what Devinoch just posted on the renegade forums! So I've been telling you guys that your first place to get news on the release date would be me, and I've been telling you this for some time, right? And you've all been wondering, "Well, if this *isn't* the release date, when are we going to get news on the real one?"
The answer is: right now.
Do I have the attention of the class?
We are currently aiming for a target release date of February 12th, 2002 and we feel confident this is about when you will be seeing Renegade. (Allow a few days either way for the possibility of things beyond our control.)
So, you wanted your date? There you go.
See you on the battlefield, folks.

Dan's weekly update! 1:10 P.M. - Alien13UFO
|
Yet another of Dan Cermack's weekly updates. Here it is:Time for my weekly address....
Single player: Basically we are bugggg fixing. Dropped in the new Sniper Rifle and Handgun. Looking very nice, haven't given final approval yet but they are very close. Added a 2nd Sakura and Sydney Mobius model for those that like a little variety in their female models when deathmatching... Put in the various Havoc models in different attire (stealth, desert, and winter added to the jungle). Now they are distributed through the single player missions appropriately.
Tightening up the levels. I expect to be looking at levels 5-7 this weekend as my review.
Multi-play: The tactics are getting evolved. Watched two mammoths backed up by a bunch of engineers (repairing damage) block an entrance to the Nod base and literally pound it to pieces. Later I was among the ranks of the brothers and was driving a Nod light tank. A mammoth came around the corner from the GDI base and was so busy trying to eliminate another Nod vehicle and myself he didn't notice he had his left tread on the edge of a ledge. He got himself up around 45 degrees (left tread higher) before he realized he was in trouble. I was able to rush in and wedge myself underneath him in a spot where he couldn't move and couldn't depress the barrels to hit me. I was able (with help) to pound him to pieces from underneath and then I promptly ran over the driver when he popped out after the mammoth exploded.
It is also pretty cool to see waves of Nod Flamethrowers going after the harvester. Harvesters are tough but you can't leave them undefended.
We are routinely playing with 30+ people and it is feeling very nice. Modifying and simplifying the MP interface a bit to provide more feedback and be more intuitive. Should be done with it by next report.
Dan

Dan Cermack's weekly update! 12:12. - Alien13UFO |
Yet another weekly update from Dan. This one isn't quite as interesting as previous ones, but what the hell, here it is:
Another excellent week, especially on the C&C mode side. The games are huge, frantic and new tactics are evolving every time we play. We do two sessions a day, helps to work out the design kinks. We have come up with a lot of little things we have to pay attention to when we build the levels, so now we are making adjustments to the maps to ensure the utmost playability (base layout, effective infantry battle areas that adjoin vehicle battle areas, etc.). We are still adjusting some of the balance as we find the high level characters need tweaking (I had high score in one game last week because I became Sydney Mobius (Power Armor Suit on) and she carries the Personal Ion Cannon. It takes a long time to fire (you have to hold down the mouse button) but what a punch. Great vehicle killer, blowing up Nod Buggies, taking out Stealth tanks, really sweet. I was even sniping from a looong distance, people didn't know what hit em and boy did they have to keep moving. She is very expensive, though, cost more than a medium tank! Tough decisions to make in the purchase screen.
Stealth is awesome. I have had many an occasion where I was running to a C&C crate or toward the Nod base when all of a sudden the Stealth tank will fire up and run me down, they don't even have to waste the reload time.
The single player side is really getting solid, playing through the campaign now with no design stoppages and minimal crash bugs. Lots of little clean up (bug wise) to do but all within reason. Continuing to work on polishing some of the look, currently concentrating on handgun and sniper rifle. Boss AI is very cool. Hope you all are up to the challenge.
Well I have to get back to trying to finish the last level. Man, it is quite the challenge.
Dan
Well, there it is. We learned a little about the personal ion cannon at least. Have a nice day! |

Renegade Rewind, Dan Cermack Interview, plus a comment. 2:37. - Alien13UFO |
Sorry for not updating in a few days. Its not that I have been busy, but shitty Geocities wasn't working, and I couldnt do anything on the site, so, sorry. Now, to the news. Renegade Rewind #13 was released a few days ago. Again, sorry for it being late, but it was beyond my control.
Behold - a nice fat (and phat) addition to our ongoing series in which Westwood employees share their exciting hands-on moments with the game. Here's Senior Producer Sean "Closer" Decker in C&C mode:
"The game wasnt going to well for me up to this point. In my first incarnation, I thought I would try to slip through the side tunnels into the NOD base and wreak a little chaos. Unfortunately for me, there was a NOD officer waiting for me with a shotgun shell that had my name on it. Wasnt enough left of me to ship home to momma.
"I find myself back at my base with two hundred credits. I decide that Im going to be thrifty and save up for a Multiple Rocket Launcher. So what do I do while the Harvester is making its runs? Ill have to see if I can get lucky and scrounge up some crates for credits. I chose to be a Grenadier and head up the vehicle ramp to the outside. As I break out into the open, I see a Gunner finish off a NOD Flamethrower. Looking around, I spy a crate on top of the peak. I make a dash for it. As Im climbing the peak, I hear a lot of explosions behind me. I look down and see Gunner go under the treads of a NOD Flame Tank. Ouch.
"I continue my climb and reach the crate without further incident. Two hundred more credits. Down below, I can see the Flame Tank prowling around, waiting for another victim.
"Lets see.he cant hit me with his Flame Tank from down there and I have all of these grenades..
"I start to rain grenades down on his tank. He starts to make erratic turns, obviously looking for the source of his pain. As I am unloading my last grenade on him, he finally dies (with a little help from a Rocket Soldier). Im feeling pretty good right about now. If I had some more grenades, Id stay up here all day.
"As I turn to head back to base and pick up some more ammo, I take a Ramjet round to the head from Sakura.
"As my dead body fades out, Im thinking that maybe hanging out on top of a peak, where everyone can see you is not the best idea I have ever come up with."
- Sean "Closer" Decker Definantly my favorite one yet! Also, Dan Cermack has again been interviewed, this time by Ferrago.co.uk. Heres a snip:
Q:Artificial intelligence must play an important role in combat with the enemy; what kind of cunning strategies will our foes be employing?
A:The AI is very powerful. They will use the cover the surrounding terrain will offer and will learn from your actions in that if you jump out of a window they will learn that they too can jump out the window. The AI uses audio and visual cues to determine where you are and how best to respond. For example if you use your suppressed pistol to create a ricochet the AI unit will normally come to where the bullet hit (since they can't hear the muzzle fire) and start looking around. You can use this concept to draw them out at times. But often they will be on defend mode and will not move from their assigned area. Also their actions will often be determined by their weapon type. Flamethrower and Chemical Weapons units will close to attack and can be very aggressive. Well, thats it for today. Why dont you go check out the Forums? |

Tools of the Trade Series Continues! 2:47 P.M. - Alien13UFO
|
Here's an image and short description of one of the vehicles, weapons or characters that our ever-lovin' commando comes in contact with out on the battlefield. This week we're highlighting the GDI Mammoth Tank. Check back here often as we continue the series.
Description:
No machine on the battlefield inspires as much awe as the GDI Mammoth Tank. Twice the weight of a fully-loaded harvester, this tracked beast towers above nearly every ground unit, a factor that often acts more as a deterrent to war rather than an invitation. Employing 2 enormous 36" cannons powered by atomic generators, the Mammoth Tank shrugs off all but the mightiest assaults and delivers sustained onslaughts against both fortified and unarmored enemy forces. The only apparent drawback to the Mammoth design is its lack of speed, which allows infrequent overunning by opponents of significant numbers. This limitation aside, there's always an extra twinkle in Havoc's eye when he spots a usable Mammoth Tank in the warzone. |

Dan's Weekly Update 2:00 P.M. - Alien13UFO |
Here is Dan Cermack's weekly update. Its pretty big this time:
Time again to tell you what has been happening.
Single player: The designers are really just cleaning up bugs. Except when we want a change or two for polish purposes.
In terms of single player I continue to go through the levels with the designers and work on polish.
We dropped in an updated Nod Minigunner and Minigunner officer. The old models were some of our oldest and frankly needed to be cleaned up. We are looking at a couple of weapon textures as well, want them to feel more interesting. Saw the final audio for the last of the rendered cinematics. Should be in the game early next week.
Also tightened up the comments that Havoc says.
MP is really getting to be a blast. Watched two stealth tanks take on a Medium tank with a Nod buggy running around. I was standing at a tunnel entrance up on the side of a hill overlooking the battlefield. It was great. I happened to be a GDI Special Forces character (Deadeye) armed with a sniper rifle so I was picking off any stray Nod guys going for the C&C crates that were spawning out on the map. I believe I got popped by a mobile Nod Artillery unit. Got respawned as a Grunt minigunner back at base and immediately went back for more.
We are still tightening up some of the MP rules but it feels like C&C and is truly different than what has been out there in the past.
We are focused on the team tactics. During test people have developed some interesting rush maneuvers based on the high speed vehicles that can hold multiple characters. If you can load an APC with a group and then barrel head long into the base you can usually get near a building before the vehicle is dusted by the base defenses. If you can get inside then it gets interesting. Getting to the tunnels under the base allows you to wreak havoc . That is if the defender left no one behind to protect things (it is the easiest way of stopping the rush tactic). There are automated defenses in the buildings but they can be defeated. Tunnels make a base easier and harder to defend at the same time. You can get somewhere quickly but so can the enemy. We are still up in the air about having tunnels (fortunately they are easily placed and removed).
Well, thats it for now. Im workin on getting that new poll up, so see ya! |
New news updater! 1:30 P.M. - Con1scrip

Engineer News... 5:12 A.M. - Alien13UFO |
Damn its early. Anyway, I just wanted to let you guys know about this. At the official Renegade Forums, there was a Question about the Engineer. Well, Dan Cermack answered the question, followed by Closer (a.k.a. Sean Decker, Sr. Producer), who had some additional info. Heres what they had to say:
The engineer is a very important class in C&C mode. He gets all the different types of C4 and his repair module can disarm c4 as well as beacons. He is also able to repair buildings (but not rebuild) and vehicles.
We are still playing with his options a bit but he is very valuable to the team. Now heres Closer's comments:
As Dan mentioned above, engineers are critical in C&C mode. Repairing buildings and vehicles. Think of two folks in a Mammoth tank (one driving, one shooting) and an engineer tucked in behind it, repairing it as it goes (until the Stealth tank sneaks up on him and turns him into raspberry jam).
Engineer can also eliminate C4 and beacons with their repair gun. Finally, they have specialized C4 that allows them to create minefields and to blow up buildings easier.
Of course, they have weaknesses, like very little armor/health and firepower.
