REVIEW OR ARMOR TROOPERS: TERRA 2050
by Christopher P. Cheng

The year was 2030 when comet 3498 passed by the earth, sparing the world by only a few kilometres. However, the consequences of the event were catastrophic. A mixture of toxic and radioactive elements never before present on earth rained down. Within a few months, water resources began to dry up and the plant life began to die off. Two superpowers were left to share the remaining resources of this Shattered Earth, one with the intent to find a cure for the ravages of the land, and the other with the intent to flee the planet and colonized the moon and Mars. Violence and lawlessness result from the conflict between these two superpowers. The future of humanity lies in the hands of those who dare to face danger. Using advanced exo-frames that can perform the tasks of both tanks and fighters, these people are known as Armor Troopers.

Written and drawn by Armand Roy Canlas, its pretty much a one-man work, except for one or two editors. For an independently produced comic, its workmanship is average. Currently at issue 6, each 24-page comic costs 25 pesos. The cover pages usually contain words from the author, some informational tidbits and a preview of the next issue.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the story is not entirely new. Its basically a mecha against mecha thing. There are generous helpings of action. However, the story development inbetween is remarkable, focusing more on the relationships of the Armor Troopers with each other, rather than on the battles alone. The main characters are well developed, avoiding the trap of having flat characters. Sometimes, it gets text-heavy though. The editing needs some work. Spelling and grammatical errors creep up often.

The artwork is OK far an independently produced comic. Both traditional methods of artwork and computer graphics are used quite frequently. Though predominantly penciled and inked by hand, CG effects are used for lens flares, computer-related pictures, type and the like. Use of tones or flats are limited, with the artist preferring to shade using pen and pencil more. There are times when the artwork seems excessive or cluttered. There are also times when the angles may need improvement.

All in all, the story is above average, owing to its depth and complexity. The artwork is pretty much good, with the addition of CG effects and all. I give it a 7 out of 10.
