One school morning during Civics class an announcement was made: Would the following teachers bring their classes to the cafeteria for the volunteer fair...I didn't care for the announcement untill the name Da Silva was called. Our Civics teacher. Alright. To the auditorium we go for the pointlessly boring "fair." Jeez they didn't even let me eat a Timbit. I snuck one though. Honey Glazed. Mmm.
How does this relate to Irma? Well out of pity I went to one of the Volunteer displays and I got a brochure. I, as a kid would have no intentions to read it, but look at the pictures.
As I looked through it I saw a picture that intrigued me. It is shown below EXACTLY as I saw it.
I was perplexed. Was that person a man or a woman? What were they buying? I wanted to learn more. I then spent the next two days asking classmates, teachers and even strangers if they thought the person in the picture was a man or a woman. I decided for myself the person was buying Oranges. At 89 cents they must've been good oranges. The overwhelming response from my survey was that the person was a woman.
Ok, so now what. The person is a woman buying oranges. I didn't want it to end there! So I said to myself, why not make a comic with this woman? Sure her hair is incomplete and she hath no legs, I shall complete the body myself using the data I know. Then I did. It looked okay.
I decided to leave Irma in the exact same position with her arm stretched in all comics. It adds comedic consistency. Even if what I wrote on the caption isn't funny you still have her reaching for something, and that's funny. People themselves should always be reaching, for a goal and a higher level. Irma in a way is a philosophical representation of mankind.
The name Irma I made up. Seemed appropriate for her character. The situations she endures in the comics are my ideas as well as suggestions from others. Feel free to e-mail or tell me a suggestion.
Well, there you have it. The origin of Irma. Irma came a long way from being a tiny clip art. She now hangs in Rooms B54, C33, A76, B1 and B30 of DCTI for all who wish to see. What does the future hold for Irma? Will she ever reach those oranges?
Irma is now under official copyright and I have high hopes for her. Yes, it's an actual copyright, I'm not posting the "" because I have nothing better to do. I have modified the image enough to make it my own and hopefully she will make it big! I will apply her to local papers soon and see how it goes...
