buy a pattern for crocheting a turtle over a margarine tub from clevercreations.com
this turtle is found on irenecrafts.com. she also includes a fish, a heart, a bear, a sunflower on the same page. the only part about this pattern that i don't like is that you have to crochet the penny holder, then the shell, the each of the legs individually, and the head & tail. each part does get crocheted directly onto the entire piece, rather than having to sew them on. for this one i used a string that is the thickness between crochet thread & worsted weight yarn. baby sport yarn would probably be about the same. i did this in order to use a quarter instead of a penny. i turned mine into a magnet.

this is my favorite turtle crochet pattern. it is done all in one piece. it is also 3dimensional. you can make it flat by not doing the long double crochet, just do a regular double crochet. they're very cute w/ yarn. the pattern is a bit confusing, so i had to modify mine quite a bit. i have this pattern memorized, as it works up in 10 minutes or less. if you use grande yarn & a p hook, you can make a 6 inch turtle!! using thread & a size 5 hook, you can make him 1 inch!
this turtle was crocheted from a vintage pattern beeosh supplied to me. it is now available on her website. this one does take awhile to do, but is worth it!! it includes a zipper underneath. i'm using mine as a pillow. this was the first time i've done crocheted ruffles...i loved it! if you did two of his shell, you could probably make an awesome normal pillow! i'm planning on adding legs & a tail to mine eventually.
this is a very easy pattern. altho, i didn't like the way the head was created in the pattern. it's actually supposed to be a double layer. when you come to the part that says "head," this is what i did instead:
ch3 turn.
dc in same st. 3trc in nxt. dc in nxt. ch3 & sl st in same st. ch 1 turn.
2 sc in ch bar. sc in nxt. 1 hdc in nxt 3. sc in nxt. 2 sc in ch bar. sl st at base.
finish off.
i think it turned better doing it this way. this is one of my favs to work up!
another cutie. it's a pin cushion or hook holder. you're supposed to fill it w/ beans, but i didn't have any. i just used stuffing. i think beans would be better, tho. start w/ an h hook, the pattern forgot to say that. it also says to form a ring around your finger & work 6 sc. i've never heard of that, but it actually worked really well! i should have taken a pic of the underneath. it's really cute. there are three parts to the overall turtle: the shell, the head, & the "base." the base crochets his belly, legs, & tail. then you sew on his head to the base. lastly, you sew on the shell. kind of a pain, but you can hot glue it if you want.
