The French Fur Trappers, led by Frenchy Cabazon, may not have been the obvious main enemies of our hero, Alfred Packer, in the movie as a whole, but they were nevertheless depicted as a serious opposition. Alongside Frenchy, trappers Preston Nutter and skunk-hatted O.D. Loutzenheiser informed Alfred that his beloved horse, Leanne, was a "trapper horse" and did not belong accompanying "diggers" such as the mining party that Packer was leading into Colorado Territory.
They disappear for a bit, after greatly displaying their arrogance, and embarrassing Packer in front of his party, only to return later in the film in the "indian" (Hey, they did have teepees)  encampment to sing a
little
song and dance about their trade. Eventually, Leanne mysteriously disappears, and all signs point to the trappers as her horsenappers. In the end, Leanne ended up being a trapper horse afterall, and the trappers were able to steal her favor, and take her away from our poor hero, now accused of being a bloodthirsty cannibal.
