COMFEST ROADSHOW: 03-05-00: Warragul Leg
Ahh...... the final show for CF2K. it was with not a little sadness that I took my seat in the front row of the West Gippsland Arts Centre (WGAC *g*). Sadness because I'd soon not be able to deny the fact that it's all over for any longer, and sadness because the better tour is *not* the one that I was about to see. While some were dining out on a luxury feast of courses such as Tripod and Boothby Graffoe, I was about to face the fast food greasiness of Mickey D. and Sarah Kendall.
A little poetic? A little metaphorical? Hey, it was my last ComFest show for the year. I think I'm entitled to a little soppiness, and a little reminiscing about how good things used to be when I was just a small child, walking the five miles home from school, barefoot in the snow
But I digress *cough*. No, it wasn't to be the Roadshow of old (last year we had Wil, Tripod, Matt King, Corinne and Pete) but it was going to be comedy, and that's what really counts, right?
Right???
The show looked to be a sell out, which is great for comedy, and says a lot about how much Warragul has been changing since I left the ol' Parental Abode. Perhaps in a few years time, Warragul can even have it's own miniature Comedy Festival.
Perhaps not.
The emcee for the night was Matt King, which I was very happy to discover. And, in true Matt King form, he had managed to use the word "poo" six times before the interval - including one rather interesting comment of "poo on!". Hmm......
I had heard most of Matt's material before. He did a couple of things that I'm pretty sure he did at *last* year's Roadshow, (the coffee plunger joke and the bit about English birds being boring) but most material was from this year's ComFest show, and I was more than happy to hear it again.
I first met Mickey D. at last year's comedy festival when he seemed to be constantly tagging along behind the incredible character of Lewis Schaffer. I'll say that Mickey has great taste in women, seeing as he's been chasing after my best friend since last year's ComFest, but his comedy is only *slightly* more effective than his attempts at snagging my fellow queen. There were some funny moments, and he seemed to go down well with the provincial crowd, but he's still got a long way to go before he can come near matching the better of Melbourne's performers. At only twenty, however, he's got plenty of time to catch up.
Dave Callan was the third "act" of the first half. I spent most of his set being alarmed and disgusted by his pants! He's a very funny guy, but I did *not* want to see him in skin tight shiny pants that - as he pointed out himself - caused more than a little testicular separation *nausea alert*. Dave did material solely from this year's ComFest show, some of which I was hearing for the second time, and some for the third, thanks to the Mooseheads. Most of it was still funny, however, and the local audience LOVED him. As the show broke for interval, all of the middle-agers around me were commenting on how brilliant the "hairy guy" was.
The first act after the break was Sarah Kendall, following one final "poo" from Matt King. Kendall will probably be a good comic in a few years' time, but, at the moment, she's still pretty average. There was even some cat and dog humour. She was certainly funny at times - it wasn't that I wasn't laughing - but she lacks something to set her aside from all the young comedians just starting out. She has a warm stage presence, thought, which I think will work in her favour.
The 'headliner' for the night was Dave Hughes. I'm not a big fan of Hughes, but he was certainly a hit amongst the rural crowd, which didn't surprise me at all. His laconic humour *has* always seemed to appeal greatly to the rather LCD element of the population - not that I want to start making any judgments about Gippsland...... With Hughes, I just put it down to the fact that his delivery bugs me and I've heard all his stuff before. Full marks to him, though, for nearly lifting the roof off the WGAC.
All in all, it was an enjoyable night, if not the most fantabulous of ways to round off the Comedy Festival. And now it's all over for another year......
Excuse me while I go and stare at a wall, sipping my tea and contemplating the festival that was......
SYMPHONY COMIQUE: SCARED WEIRD LITTLE GUYS: 24-04-00
Some Scaredies favourites, with full orchestral and choral backing. A fitting way to end the festival and a good night out.
THE MOOSEHEAD BENEFIT: 23-04-00
This show is definately the most "unmissable" of the festival, especially if you haven't had the chance to see many individual shows (hmmm.... somehow I don't think I fit into that category *g*). A great selection of performers, including IZZARD(!!!), this show was also a tribute to Dave Taranto, which was fantastic, as for a lot of the festival it felt as though he had just been forgotten. Now to get my hands on the Taranto Trust library......
CELEBRITY THEATRESPORTS: 22-04-00
This show was a lot shorter than last year's, which is a pity, as it's traditionally one of the most enjoyable of the festival. When we saw that one team consisted of Fleety, Boothby, Russel Fletcher and Adam Spencer, we thought that the winner was guaranteed. We were wrong. Linda Blair came home strong and were well deserved winners. The conclusion??? I want some of whatever Boothby was on!!!!!!
MORGAN'S BAR AND GRILL: 21-04-00
This show was much better than I was expecting. I've always liked Morgs as a comedian, but, of late, I often end up feeling guilty after watching him for a while. This show was different, however. Perhaps it had something to do with Morgs feeling a lot more at home behind the bar than up on a stage, but there was no accusative tone to any of the humour. Instead there were just tales, laughs and songs from Rebecca Bernard.
HOT NUTS AND POPCORN SHOW: ERIC AND DEREK: 20-04-00
The third part of the ex-Three Canadians trifecta for this night, this show was fantastic, with guests such as Adam Hills (a much-appreciated chance to see some more of one of my festival faves) and local wrestling "stars". The highlight would probably have to be Eric and Derek being lifted over wrestlers' heads by the groins *g*. A great way to end the evening. It's wonderful to see that the Three Canadians are still doing incredible stuff now that they've gone their separate ways.
KOKOMO OR BUST: PETER HELLIAR: 19-04-00
Although a night of "Pete's greatest hits" is a tempting offering (!) it was great to hear mostly new material in this show. Of course, Pete's now famous dying bee routine was also present, so there was no need for audience disappointment! Mostly the type of humour we can all identify with (walking into a room and forgetting why you went there in the first place) it was a very funny show indeed and dedicated to Dave Taranto, which was a lovely touch.
NOT KOSHER: RACHEL BERGER: 19-04-00
Rachel returns to the festival scene with a great show. We were there on a Wednesday night, which meant that the show was signed for deaf punters - an idea that has unfortunately only been employed by Rachel and Adam Hills so far. It was a great show, with fancy ballroom dancing gowns and everything! It's good to see this fantastic comic with staying power back in the comedy scene proper.
OUT OF TIME: THE IMPROBABLES: 19-04-00
I think the main problem for me with this show was that I had been improv spoilt by the Loose Moose guys! There was also the fact that several of the members of the group were irritatingly drama-student-esque. Apart from that, though, it was an entertaining show. Not one of the best shows of the festival, but for only ten dollars, it was an enjoyable hour.
EDDIE IZZARD: 18-04-00
What more can I say than that it was Izzard? The show couldn't have been anything *but* brilliant and it certainly didn't disappoint. Going for over three hours (!) there was ne'er a dull moment, with Izzard demonstrating most aptly why he is one of the world's greatest comedians. Being the opening night, it was a great audience, made up mostly of Shoppers. A fantastic comedian and a fantastic show.
THE PLANET: 17-04-00
Stewart Lee, Duff, The Fake McCoys, Jo Stanley & Jodie J. Hill, Alan Brough, Adrian Caulier, Matt Elsbury.
A fantastic night as always. The highlight had to be the chat at the end. You could tell the shoppers in the audience by the "oohs" at the announcement of the same :-)
DOOM RIDERS: THE FOUR NOELS: 16-04-00
After being told for ages that we *had* to see the four noels, we finally did so for the first time and were most impressed. Great songs and a highly original idea, it's now perfectly clear why these guys were rewarded with a moosehead last year. And the starwars references were almost deserving of my Qui-Gon tie *g*
FESTIVAL CLUB: 15-04-00
Scardies Band! Scardies band! heheh.... that was the ultimate highlight of the night with performances such as:
YMCA - Tripod
Cool For Cats - Matt King
Mickey - Janet McLeod
King of the Road - Stewart Lee
and heaps more. But the stand-up element was also fantastic, with Noel Fielding (love those backwards rams legs), Morgs (HATE that heckler *grrr*) and Boothby Graffoe and a scottish guy whose name's slipped my mind.
A great night :-)
22-04-00
Another scardies band night, with even more performers, a couple of highlights being Ross Noble's number and Lawrence and Damien's number and subsequent pash. C'mon, we've been wanting to see that FOR AGES!!!!!! We were also treated to another glimpse at the Arctic Boosh guys and a further exploration of Noel's backwards ram's legs *g*. A great night.
A DUFF NIGHT OUT: DUFF: 15-04-00
Duff's MCing in this show was very...... Duff *g*. I think that's the only real way to put it! The 'guests' were rather Espy in their quality, but there were a few good laughs amongst their material, and we were really there to see Duff anyway, and he certainly didn't disappoint. A very funny, if slightly insane, guy - and a show that reflected this.
THE GREAT DEBATE: THAT LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO 'ROUND: 15-04-00
Another pathetic effort by McDemott. The only saving graces of this debate were Ross Noble and Rod Quantok as moderator. A lovely little dance by Ross and a pash between him and McDermott that was a lot more erotic than it should have been, considering who the latter is. *sigh* Once a slash writer......
A QUIET WORD WITH TONY MARTIN: 14-04-00
It's great to see Tony back on stage and his show certainly wasn't a disappointment, with plenty of laughs and best of all, a certain very funny psycopath song *g*. It was a fairly typical Espy crowd, and the floors were just as sticky as I'd been told to expect! I doubt I would have given Tony the Barry award, but I think he was deserving of the nomination nonetheless.
ROSS NOBLE: 13-04-00
I'd love to be friends with this guy simply because his current bright pink hair would make it easy to pick him out in even the hugest crowd! His show was fantastic, with most of the humour stemming from a bunch of idiots in the front row and other "improv" type things as moths and late audience members. I have a huge respect for comedians whose improv is as funny as (or even funnier than) their prepared stuff, and Ross Noble falls firmly into this category. Brilliant.
21-04-00
Yep. Again. The talent this guy has for improv never fails to amaze me. And he's a real spunk too *lol*.
GERARD McCULLOUGH - AN ENGLISHMAN, AN IRISHMAN AND A SCOTSMAN WALK INTO A DOCUMENTARY: 13-04-00
It wasn't difficult to see why Gerard recieved a Moosehead for this offering. Definately one of the most clever shows I've seen this far, the basic concept was an exploration of the "truth" behind the most common jokes. It was brilliantly carried out, and definately well worth a look. It's just a pity the Regent Room is so damn freezing all of the time!!!
ADAM BLOOM: 13-04-00
I loved this guy last year, so I was pleased to see he was coming out from the UK again for this year's festival. The biggest jokes of the night actually stemmed from a mobile phone ringing in the audience. It turned into a comedian's dream when it turned out the caller was ringing an audience member to arrange an appointment to be taught the fine art of colonic irrigation *rofl*. The audience member was a good sport, even offering Adam a free sample, and the show was fantastic. It's no wonder this guy always sells out.
TOM RHODES: 12-04-00
Tom Rhodes is American, but very funny once you get used to that *g*. Ranging from the very crude to the thought provoking, Rhodes' show was one full of laughs. Lookswise, he's like the bastard love child of Chris Barrie, Christian Slater and John Travolta, with the voice of Christian Slater. Nothing to do with the comedy, but in direct contrast to his poster!!!
GREG O'SULLIVAN & CHRIS WAINHOUSE - EXTREME SHAMES: 12-04-00
"Go back to Brisbane" would be the advice I'd give these lads, because frankly Melbourne moved on from this kind of humour quite some time ago. Drug humour and fat jokes belong more in a raw comedy heat than a town hall festival offering. Sure, there were some amusing moments, but there were other times where I felt like I had stumbled into a Melbourne comedian's rope graveyard. Bring on another local - it's times like these I love my city even more than usual.
LANO AND WOODLEY ARE SLICK: 11-04-00
We were sitting about as far away as possible for this one, but at least we *had* seats, unlike about 20 unfortunate victims of over booking the venue (something that was repeated on Thursday night). It was classic Lano and Woodley brilliance - truly classic in some places, with a tennis sketch being one used since the days of the Found Objects! It would have been nicer to have a closer view of Col *eg*, but the humour was just as good from a distance.
ADAM HILLS - GOODY TWO SHOES: 11-04-00
This guy takes audience participation very, very seriously. Somehow, however, it didn't make me cringe like it would have done if it seemed contrived. Instead, it just made Adam seem more personable. There were some great new musical takes on the Lord's Prayer, a spontaneous boy band formations and enough Matrix jokes for Adam to claim the video he had hired the night before as a tax deduction! A nice guy, and a very funny show.
MATT KING - ROCK 'ARD: 09-04-00
Classic Matt King with only a little rope, this was an epic show, going well into the night, with plenty of laughs to fill the time. Matt King is one of those comics whose routines and styles you could easily pick in a line up, but in a festival full of shows, it can be nice to slip into some warm familiarity every now and then.
ARCTIC BOOSH: 09-04-00
Another very clever and original festival offering. These two guys from the UK were most amusing, from their portrayal of bored posties to the hip-hop interludes. At times there was cause for questions of "What the fuck?" but it was constantly amusing and interesting.
18-04-00
Another show I needed to see a second time. These guys are fantastic, with a great dose of insanity that is strangely attractive *g*. The show was even better the second time. Well deserving of the Barry Award.
THE GREAT DEBATE - THAT BIGGER IS BETTER: 09-04-00
There was some great debating here...... and some abysmal debating. Judith Lucy and Jean Kittson were at their brilliant best, Boothby Graffoe and Stewart Lee were as fantastic as in their individual shows, and Dave O'Neil was the surprise highlight in my books. Unfortunately, a certain Good News Week show pony brought the standard down tremendously. I think the rock bottom was reached when he embarrasingly mocked one of Stewart's most clever jokes, making it blatently obvious that he just hadn't got it. Afterwards, I felt quite saddened, that one who was once so brilliant was now the only lowlight of my festival to that point. Oh how the mighty have fallen. *sigh*
THE BIG QUESTIONS - JAMES O'LOUGLIN AND PETER BERNER: 08-04-00
It was quite easy to pick Hope's and my questions, although I'm still pissed off at Pete for saying that my relationship with a sixty year old, dead, fictional Star Wars character isn't going to last. *sob* If only he knew that Qui-Gon and I are engaged on an astral plane...... This show was as funny as it was last year, with Pete's and James' comedy styles complementing each other perfectly. The number one example?
Question: Why does the sun shine?
James: Because you're in love.
Pete: Because it's a big ball of gas.
Oh. And Pete can suck his own dick apparently. Hmmmm......
GEDI NIGHTS - GED WOOD: 08-04-00
A very funny show, the humour emphasised by the fact that Ged's parents were in the audience *g* and his mum kept commenting on how wonderful he was. I *was* having the ol' 'replaying a conversation I just had' problem again (Oops *g*) but I managed to defend The Phantom Menace and very much enjoy the show despite my hyperactivity *lol*.
THE PEDO AND WIL SHOW (OFFICIALLY KNOWN AS FIVE-THIRTY - ADAM SPENCER & WIL ANDERSON): 08-04-00
Okay, it's no big secret that I can't stand Pedo - but this show was actually very good despite his presence - although I don't take kindly to them being nasty about Robbie Williams *g*. Adam was bearable - his theatre sports experience holding him in good stead - and Wil was Wil - so obviously great. The show hadn't really been written ahead of time *g* so there were a few interesting moments, but 'twas good all the same - except for the fucking screamers - "oh, we're going to your other show, Wil".... big fucking surprise...
TRIPOD: OPEN SLATHER: 07-04-00
Ah, it was Tripod so of course it was going to be good! There was only one song new to my ears, but that was mostly due to the fact that I go to see these guys WAY too often! And besides, sometimes you want to just sit back and listen to the music without having to ache all over from laughing - which is not to say that Tripod aren't funny - the exact opposite in fact! A brilliant show (of course) in a fantastic venue - hurrah for the Pat!!!
22-04-00
Another great show from the Tripod boys with some very yummy Prince Pat food before-hand. It's amazing how last year we were tipping Tripod as the next big things... and this year they're HUGE. And so they should be *g*.
LIFE - GET IT UP YA!: 06-04-00
There was some VERY original costuming in this show! Not something to bump into in the Boags bar afterwards!!! A great idea, this show runs much like that "What's Happening To Me" book we all snickered over back in primary school. Leecherous parents and horny teenagers made for an original show that's a great laugh and good value.
WHAT'S A GIRL LIKE YOU - CORRINE GRANT: 06-04-00
It was one of those shows where you really shouldn't be laughing so damn hard at "been there" humour - especially when you consider that the theme of the show was pretty much being pissed...... and unattractively so. Hey, maybe it's NOT only me who turns into a drunken letch at the sound of vodka being poured into a glass!!! I absolutely HURT at hearing od Corrine's drunken make over and laughed continuously throughout.
BOOTHBY GRAFFOE: 06-04-00
After hearing several reports, I entered this show with trepidations, expecting more to be replaying a conversation I had just had over and over in my mind (yes, just call me pathetic) than laughing very much, but I was pleasantly surprised. It was a fantastic show, and very funny. The only drawback was that at times Boothby sounded so much like Rik Mayall that I just had to look away and pretend that it was my comedy god standing before me *g*.
DENISE SCOTT: SUBURBAN RIOT : 06-04-00
I missed the first ten minutes of this thanks to bayside trains, so i won't be able to wax lyrical about the opening, but this was a surprisingly good show. I went in there expecting the classic rope of "Quick, kids, get in the bath, Nana's coming" and actually got 50 minutes (normally 60 *g*) of material I'd never heard before. Based loosely around Denise's childhood - in particular one bushfire incident, I found the show to be mostly smile humour - but worth the ticket cost nonetheless.
SCARED WEIRD LITTLE GUYS - ROCK: 05-04-00
A lot of this stuff was rope, but there's something about decent music that makes rope a good thing - think Tripod and the Dougs. Put basically, the scaredies *did* rock - and the audience even made it to Bardot on the Rockter scale of bad rock puns. I feel so proud.
Basically it was classic Scaredies (sans orchestra *g*) so that means it was well worth a look :-)
BOB DOWNE - WHITER! BRIGHTER!: 05-04-00
I basically got what I expected to get out of Bob Downe's show. I'm not a huge fan of his comedy, so I was mostly going along for the music and just because I could *g*. I wasn't disappointed music wise ("Love is in the air" ROCKS!!! *lol*) but I was fairly right about the comedy. Rather old.... The 'rope' was the worst - somehow i think a joke about the Dougs from the 1991 TV show DAAS K is long overdue to be retired!!! That's not to say that I didn't laugh - cos i did. It's just that, with all of the originality around this year's fest, it's hard NOT to notice that Bob's humour hasn't changed much since those days on the Big Gig...
STEWART LEE: 04-04-00
It took a while to get used to Stewart's laconic style, but once i did, i really enjoyed this show. The only problem was that Aussie audiences just didn't seem to get this guy at all. *sigh*
GREG FLEET & ALAN BROUGH - INTERROGATION: 02-04-00
Hmm.... have i used the term brilliant too many times yet??? This thing was great - two comedians that are fabaroonie on their own means even better joined together! The car chase is fantastic and the comedy throughout was spot on.
The theatre! The theatre!
WIL ANDERSON - WHO WANTS TO BE A WILIONAIRE: 02-04-00
It was always a question of when rather than if Wil would do a show about this Eddie McGuire enterprise *g*. It was a typical Wil show, which means very funny. There was a lot of good stuff done on the spot too - which was helped along by Sandwhich Artistes and tampon nickers in the audience *bg*. A comedian well worth seeing - and not just because he's been on Good News Week. *sigh*
LOOSE MOOSE MAMMOTH BIG SHOW: 02-04-00
This was another brilliant show - Improv at it's best. The two remaining Canadians (ie/ eric and derek rather than north *lol*) are fantastic, as are all their canadian friends *g*.
12-04-00
This seemed even better for a second time, possibly because we were closer to the action. I won't go into the details again... just see it if they ever come back!
20-04-00
Yep. Again. What can I say? These guys are fantastic. Oh, and there was nudity too *g*.
21-04-00
Um..... yeah.... for the fourth time... are you beginning to see that I quite liked this show???
23-04-00
*sigh* Again. Goddamnit, I'm addicted to this show and are seriously considering kidnapping the Canadians and forcing them to do improv in my own home for the rest of eternity *lol*. I tells ya - they'd better be out again next year!!!!!!
WIL ANDERSON - TERRA WILIUS: 01-04-00
Some stuff from last years ComFest show with mostly stuff from the Fringe. The fringe stuff was fine cos we were too drunk to remember it *lol*. Wil got a good crowd for a repeat performance and it was classic Wil Anderson... It was well worth a look see for fans or those who didn't catch his Fringe show.
DAVE CALLAN - SHITHOUSE: 01-04-00
What can I say? It was classic Dave. Very funny but the guy himself is a bastard. I got immense pleasure from the fact that his fly kept falling down.
NORTH DARLING - NORTH ALONE: 01-04-00
See this!!!!!! Despite the fact that he's been dating a Popstar for the past two years *lol* this guy is fantastic - and really quite spunky too *lol*.
20-04-00
Another repeat viewing. This show is so humourous and innovative that I just *had* to see it a second time. North and A.J. do a great job with this show, from the puppetry to the blow up dolphins. Even better the second time.
DAMIAN CALLINAN - SPEECH NIGHT: 01-04-00
Very clever - Damian is great at changing in and out of characters with a wave of the hand and circular movement *g*. It reminded me a little *too* much of my old St Paul's school speech nights *G*......
DAMIAN CALLINAN & LAWRENCE MOONEY - OUT AND ABOUT: 31-03-00
Brilliant. These guys just get better and better. The on-stage chemistry is fantastic... if i wanted to slash two comedians..... No, wait, I've already done that, haven't I... *ebg*
Definately one of the best shows of the festival.
KITTY FLANAGAN - FLANOSSERUS: 31-03-00
This show was surprisingly good. I went along cos it was $8-00 and I'd never seen her stand up, but I liked her on Full Frontal *g*. I certainly got my eight bucks worth. It was a funny show - certainly not hugely original, but good for the classic stand up style.
THE EMPTY POCKETS & TIM SMITH - BORN THREE: 30-03-00
The worst thing about this show was the audience. Can anyone say "Triple M Listener"??? The best part of this show was actually getting to see the Empty Pockets do live comedy. There was nothing hugely in your face original, but it was definately a good show nonetheless.
THE EMOTIONAL PEOPLE - ROCKOTHELLO: 30-03-00
This was fantastic! These guys definately deserve the Moosehead award they're clutching in their hot little hands. Great music, terrifying costumes *g* and funny comedy - what more could a punter ask for? *lol*
KIM HOPE & ADAM RICHARD - SASSY: 30-03-00
As I said to someone who asked - "It's Kim and Adam, so it's brilliant of course". Classic Kimmy and Adam humour with plenty of dancing, bitching and Val Mormon advertising. It was a late show that was definately not to be missed. I could have done without the Naked Chef *eg* but apart from that.... well worth the ticket price! If nothing else, then simply cos Adam's so purty!!!
ROD QUANTOCK - UTOPIA: 31-03-00
My one word description of this show was "paranoid". I don't know, maybe i was in too optimistic a mood this night (ooh, the happy drugs are kicking in!) but there was just something about Rod's material that made me want to go up there and say "C'mon, it's not THAT bad". And this is coming from a life-hardened cynic *g*. I'm prolly not the best person to review the show. I definately say it was very good... but I think I'm a little over Rod Quantock. Maybe I just can't be bothered with the intellectual workout he gives me *g*. More likely it's that during ComFest life smells so sweet to me that i can't help but think PARANOID when faced with Big Brother stories *g*
