Robots Never Sleep? (1)
ACT 1
FADE IN:
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY
On the main street, the glass of an ornamented show window is
smashed into pieces by a rock. Young PUNKs swarm into the shop
with roars and take away any merchandise. Flames are seen lift
from buildings around there.
EXT. ANOTHER DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY
Frightened people run away and young PUNKs chase them with a
laughter. A gaggle of Punks chase around a few CITIZENs. When
one Citizen trips up, Punks swarm to hit and kick him.
CITIZEN 1
No, no. Get off. Break it up.
PUNK 1
C'mon, cream puff. Fight! I'm gonna bump ya off. Wait, wimp.
Wait!
Citizen 1 escapes and the Punks follow him with shrieks of
laughter.
EXT. ANOTHER DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY
A couple Punks climb the building and race to get a small box on
the wall.
PUNK 2
Got it.
He throws it down. Many Punks gather beneath him and kick this
box.
PUNK 3
Take this, fucking antenna. Don't bird-dog us, fucking telecom
box. Disgusting! Take this. Take this.
They kick off the box. A gang member with SUNGLASSES 1 wryly sees
them from a distance.
EXT. ANOTHER DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY
Some Punks come out of a store, holding tons of loots. We see
DEAN BOLAN (18) among them. He looks timid but excited at
vandalism.
DEAN
Look at this. I got it. Shoplifting. Loot. Robbery. Murder!
Nobody can blame me!
From the corner, the Riot Police appear with plastic shields.
Dean gets scared and runs away.
The Rioters are aware of them and throw rocks and pebbles. Dean
looks back and throws a pebble together with others. His pebble
doesn't reach the Riot Police and hits the rear head of a Punk.
Dean is amazed but soon excited.
DEAN
Fucking cop. I got you, chicken.
The Rioters still crash with the Police troop. The tear gas is
shot, and Dean runs away with fright before anyone else.
INT. PATROL CAR - DAY
Detective GEORGE BLOOD (46) and VAUGHM HELM (35) drive a patrol
car to the downtown. Sniff dog OSCAR is at the rear seat. Smokes
go up ahead of them and many cars run up and past them back on the
other lane. They don't use their steering wheels because all cars
are remotely controlled on the outbound lane.
EXT. ANOTHER STREET - DAY
An emergent check point is set up. The Policemen block the street
and check the cars into the downtown. The patrol car of George
and Vaughm comes up.
INT. PATROL CAR - DAY
Vaughm stops the car. One uniform Policeman looks into the car.
George shows his ID and Vaughm tries to start the car. But the
Policeman stops them.
POLICEMAN
Your card, please.
GEORGE
Card?
POLICEMAN
Magnetic card, sir. Every officer was told to bring this card.
GEORGE
Oh!
George feels the pocket.
POLICEMAN 1
It's an emergency, sir. We got such many collisions that the
remote control system's out of order, sir.
George makes a face while feeling the pocket. Vaughm shows his
card. Policeman checks it and gives him back.
POLICEMAN 1
Please put this card into the slot for communications. The
system'll automatically report your location to the headquarters,
sir.
Policeman makes a salute and the car starts.
INT. PATROL CAR - DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY
Many cars have collided on the street.
GEORGE
Fucking new system, eh?
VAUGHM
This system usually keeps the traffic under perfect control.
GEORGE
Hum ... It doesn't keep away the mob from the downtown.
VAUGHM
An emergency.
The crashed cars stand on their way. Vaughm steps on the brake.
VAUGHM
Shit!
Both open the door and get off the car.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY (CONTINUOUS)
George and Vaughm get off the patrol car. Oscar follows them.
They approach the crashed cars. The drivers are trapped in the
cars.
GEORGE
Oh, my God!
An ambulance comes with sirens. The FIREFIGHTERs get off and
start the rescue activity.
FIREFIGHTER
Hurry up. They are wounded.
George and Vaughm see them and start walking.
GEORGE
That's new system!
They walk toward the downtown where smokes are lifting.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY
Rioters throw rocks to Riot Police. Chief officer CHRIS BOLAN
(39) commands the troop. He hardly speaks.
The people run away from the Rioters toward the troop. The
Rioters threaten them but don't injure anybody under studious
discipline. The Police shoot tear gas. The frightened Rioters
race off. The Policemen dash toward the Rioters and chase them.
Chris coldly sees them.
INT. LABORATORY - DAY
The room is equipped with many computers, high-tech equipment and
others, offering the good research environments. Among the
equipment, DR.ADAM SAGE (50) plays the chess with ROBOT ROMEO. He
is losing and makes a face to squeeze out next move.
ROBOT
Dr.Sage, your move.
Dr.sage continues to reflect in silence.
ROBOT
Dr.Sage, your move.
DR.SAGE
I know. Uhhh,... Romeo, could you do me a favor? I want you to
change the previous...
ROBOT
Dr. Sage, your move.
DR.SAGE
I know, I know. But I am asking,... No, no. I advise you more
carefully considerations over the move you have just chosen...
ROBOT
Dr.Sage, your move.
DR.SAGE
Oh, shit! Same phrase. Don't you feel sorry for me? You're
designed for my entertainment. You can't beat me. You should be
nice and, uh, obedient for me...
ROBOT
Dr.Sage, your move.
DR.SAGE
Okay, it's enough. Make a tea. I don't need your favor.
Robot stands up and heads for the sink.
DR.SAGE
Hum, my fault. Don't expect him.
Dr.Sage keeps his eyes on the back of Robot, which is making a
tea. Dr.Sage secretly moves a pawn on the chessboard and sits
down as usual. The Robot comes back with tea.
ROBOT
Dr.Sage, the tea is ready.
DR.SAGE
Oh, good work. I am too thirsty to get off on the game.
Robot serves the tea. Dr.Sage takes a sip.
DR.SAGE
Good. Feel much better. So I am ready. I'm gonna get you.
Dr.Sage turns to the chessboard. The Robot's eyes flash.
ROBOT
Emergency, emergency. Unaccountable condition is detected.
Dr.Sage is astonished.
DR.SAGE
Stop it. Everything all right.
ROBOT
Someone may be trespassing in this premise. The intruder'd be
thief, burglar, drug smuggler, murderer, intelligent agent or
mother fucker.
DR.SAGE
Shut up! Let's go ahead with the game.
ROBOT
Contact the police department. Call number 911. Call number 911.
The door is thrown open behind Dr.Sage and he turns back.
DR.SAGE
(in astonishment)
Oh, you!
MOMENT LATER
Entrepreneur WARREN KINSELLA (30's) stands in front of Dr.Sage at
the center of room. Warren is in bad mood.
WARREN
Are you sure you understand what you got to do?
DR.SAGE
Of course, I do. I do. Completely. I must check every function
of my Romeo, right?
WARREN
We are behind the schedule half years!
DR.SAGE
Calm down. I strive to give him special function. It's very
important and difficult. I call it disobedience function. If
robot obeys any order of his owner, somebody else may be hurt, but
if he ignores any order, the owner may be upset...
WARREN
Slow! How long will it take? We can't wait any more.
DR.SAGE
Be patient, Warren. I almost get it. Soon, we'll have...
WARREN
What are you doing every day? You're playing the chess with it
all day long, aren't you?
DR.SAGE
No, no, no. I'm working like maniac. Today, I'm checking his
security system. It's very important for housekeeping robot.
ROBOT
Emergency, emergency. Unaccountable condition is detected.
DR.SAGE
See?
ROBOT
Someone may have intruded in this premise and moved a pawn on the
chess board.
DR.SAGE
Shut up!
WARREN
Oh, my!
ROBOT
The intruder'd be thief, burglar, drug smuggler, murderer,
intelligent agent or mother fucker.
Dr.Sage goes around to the back of Robot and turns off the switch.
The Robot turns silent.
WARREN
Dr.Sage, you gotta rush. We've received special order from
client. They're looking for patrol system.
DR.SAGE
Patrol system?
WARREN
We can sell our new product to make this city quiet!
DR.SAGE Oh, no. We're not so advanced.
WARREN
It's a good chance for our firm. We can show our superb
innovation to the world. You know what's going on in our city?
DR.SAGE
Nope. What's that?
WARREN
C'mon! The city is up! The entire world is watching us. Not
time to play the chess. Make it before next one. Undoubtedly,
riot'll break out again.
DR.SAGE
Wait. You'd be more careful. I'd like to give him some autonomy.
WARREN
Don't care. Move fast. The winner takes all. It's the law in
the times.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT
George and Vaughm arrive at the rioting area. They see a lot of
merchandise littered on the street as well as debris. But no
injurers can be seen around there.
GEORGE
Oh, my God!
Some Punks delightfully destroy the building and anything. Seeing
George and Vaughm, they halt and look at them blankly. George
shows his police ID.
GEORGE
Police! You're under arrest.
The Rioters race off with roars and laughters. George sees Dean,
the son of Chris, among the escaping Punks.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - ANOTHER STREET - NIGHT
The huge crowd of Rioters gather far away from the Riot Police.
The Rioters shout out, laugh and sing. The Riot Police dash
toward them. The Rioters disperse and soon gather at a certain
distance, booing and yelling out.
Chris is surrounded by the Riot Police, frowning at them. George
runs up.
GEORGE
The terrible violence at 7th Ave, sir. Send more men there.
Chris gives George a glimpse and turns his face away.
GEORGE
You see? Your computers don't work. We need more men!
CHRIS
(to others)
Send more men to guard the TV station. Don't let them send dorky
show again.
George clicks his tongue. The siren wails. The Rioters throw
rocks to the Riot Police.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NEXT MORNING
On the quiet street, some shops have been burned and nobody there.
We move to the next corner to see JANET HELM (33) and his son TOBY
(13) hand the people sandwich and drink among other volunteers.
JANET
God bless you.
Away from them, men gather and discuss something over coffee.
CITIZEN 1
I can't take it any more. Don't let them walk around in our city.
CITIZEN 2
Get a gun. We should fight them.
CITIZEN 3
Don't go too far.
CITIZEN 2
They're blowing up our city.
CITIZEN 3
But they didn't hurt anybody.
CITIZEN 1
Not yet but I'm sure that they'll be soon more violent. It's late
if anybody is hurt and killed.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - ANOTHER STREET - MORNING (CONTINUOUS)
George and Stephanie get off the patrol car and walk together.
George tries to outpace her.
GEORGE
Leave me alone.
STEPHANIE
No, sorry.
GEORGE
Keep your nose out of my business. I hate super.
STEPHANIE
I must stick to you. We're on the team.
George picks up the speed and Stephanie keeps pace with him.
STEPHANIE
Lt.Blood.
George keeps on walking and makes no answer.
STEPHANIE
Now computers handle anything and we don't need to fight hoodlums
like before. Please slow down.
GEORGE
Huh. I don't trust computers.
STEPHANIE
You gotta study it. Time to boogie. Without computers, we can't
work...
All of a sudden, George starts running forward.
GEORGE
Oh, I love it.
A young THIEF comes out of a destroyed house, holding many goods.
He is amazed at George and runs away, throwing away the loots.
George chases him in excitement.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - MORNING
The people still discuss on the quiet street.
CITIZEN 1
What made this city packed with bums and loonies?
CITIZEN 2
Yeah, disgusting. We'd work.
CITIZEN 3
But no job for cabbies any more.
The Thief runs up from the corner, followed by George. The Thief
sees the people there and tries to escape in the different
direction. George runs after him and the people follow them.
George and people chase the Thief together.
Stephanie walks up and coldly sees them. After chase and wrestle,
George arrests the Thief.
GEORGE
Come on, cull. Come on.
George takes the handcuffed Thief toward the car.
GEORGE
Get in the car. You got the jail.
The people follow them and cheer at George.
CITIZEN 1
Great, officer, great.
CITIZEN 2
You are our hero. Different from other cops. They do nothing but
you did. Awesome! Really awesome!
Stephanie silently follows George. The people kick up their heels
and cheer at George.
INT. PATROL CAR - MORNING
Stephanie drives the car. The people still wave to the car.
George is in good mood.
STEPHANIE
Lt.Blood, please. We're ordered not to chase suspect.
GEORGE
Shut up! You saw that! This jackal's walking out with loots!
Oh, shit! You don't deserve the badge if you kiss him off.
STEPHANIE
If we report the headquarters, global positioning system can spot
any car, started from the area. Soon we can flag this perp.
GEORGE
Fucking new system! It bombed out at the moment we need.
STEPHANIE
It's very sophisticated system.
GEORGE
You're changing too fast and now you're freaked out without the
fucking high-tech, eh?
STEPHANIE
Just for a moment.
GEORGE
Grassroots'd go through such chaos any moment. We must protect
them while your stuff barfs.
They turn silent, just driving the car.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - DAY
Chris has the meeting with his Officers.
CHRIS
It's state-of-the-art, isn't it?
OFFICER
Emergency, sir. We got tons of fights and crashes. Every section
needs more folks, sir.
CHRIS
When are they gonna snap out of it?
OFFICER
They said a week.
CHRIS
Fix it today.
OFFICER
Many casualty and damage reports, sir. Each section wants more ...
CHRIS
The remote traffic control system'll be an answer.
OFFICER
Yes, sir.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - HALLWAY - DAY
George and Stephanie walk down to the interrogation room, dragging
the handcuffed Thief.
STEPHANIE
It's uncalled-for, Lt.Blood. We must follow the order.
Otherwise, ...
GEORGE
Don't order me. I've been working for cop shop before you got
kindergarten.
STEPHANIE
Yes, sir. But the order is ...
GEORGE
I said "Shut up." Cops gotta watch the safety of good fella.
Didn't they tell you this at geekdom? Computer cop!
Chris comes out of his office and runs into George.
GEORGE
Lt.Bolan. We bagged this thief at the downtown, sir. We look for
some hot tip from him.
CHRIS
Release him.
Chris starts walking and George keeps up with him.
GEORGE
What!
CHRIS
We can't depend on catchy instinct of old Kojac.
GEORGE
But this sponge stole stuffs from the house before us. Save the
people from such shameless suckers.
CHRIS
If he is innocent, we'll get bogged down with a jam.
GEORGE
Innocent! We saw him looting. So did she.
George looks at Stephanie. She turns away. Chris leaves there.
Stephanie gives George a scornful glimpse.
INT. LABORATORY - DAY
Dr.Sage works on the computer at the desk. He misses a knock at
the door. The Robot automatically goes and opens the door to
reveal Warren, Chris and other Officers.
ROBOT
Welcome, Dr.Sage is in the middle of something. Shall I pass him
message?
WARREN
(to Chris)
Here you go. It's our product for you. Smart and dynamic.
Dr. Sage looks back and slowly stands up with grim expression.
Warren and other Officers enter the room. The Robot blocks them
except Warren.
ROBOT
Warning! Warning! You have no admission to enter this room.
WARREN
Don't mind. They are our guests, Romeo. Very important persons.
ROBOT
Without admission, nobody can enter this room. It's rule.
Warren signals Dr.Sage and Dr.Sage comes up.
DR.SAGE
It's okay, Romeo.
ROBOT
Sorry. It's rule. The rule is made to be kept.
WARREN
(sighs with a smile)
Stubborn! Where did he get it?
Warren smiles at the Officers and they retire to the entrance.
WARREN
So, Romeo, would you let us in?
ROBOT
If the owner of this property permits.
DR.SAGE
Let them in, Romeo.
ROBOT
Welcome, gentlemen!
All come into the room and sit down on the chairs.
WARREN
This robot is a miracle in our century. In future, the name of
inventor Dr.Adam Sage'll be inscribed alongside of Newton and
Einstein.
Dr.Sage bluntly turns away.
CHRIS
Can it go out and walk around through the street?
WARREN
Of course.
DR.SAGE
No! He's house keeper. Don't let him out.
WARREN
Yes, yes. Nothing is different indoor and outdoor.
DR.SAGE
Oh, c'mon. He'll have a bad fall and broken leg. If it rains,
he'd get shortcircuit.
WARREN
Don't worry. They'll get him umbrella.
CHRIS
Hum. We can talk about it later. Next issue first.
WARREN
Sure. Dr.Sage, tell them about the gunfire sensor.
DR.SAGE
Sensor to gunfire? Yeah. Uh, two systems are feasible. One to
detect a flash when the fire powder blasts and the other to use
smoke after the sulfur burns out.
WARREN
And if you give the robot such sensor, you can use it for armed
criminals. But it's special order and costs little more... no,
no, no, just a bit higher than this model.
DR.SAGE
Oh, no. It is too dangerous. We need go through much more tests.
What if it stalls on the street?
WARREN
Don't worry. Cops are tough.
DR.SAGE
No! Don't over-trust robots.
WARREN
Why not?
CHRIS
Anyway, we'd think it over carefully.
Chris and Officers head for the door. Warren gives Dr.Sage a
sharp stare and follows them. The Robot trails them.
ROBOT
Goodbye. See you again.
WARREN
Marvelous robot, isn't it?
Chris goes out without reply. The door is closed.
DR.SAGE
They're the last persons we'd see again, Romeo. Understand?
ROBOT
Nice to talk to you.
Dr.Sage turns away and sighs.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - INTERROGATION ROOM - DAY
George questions the Thief. Other Officers stand behind him, just
looking at the two.
GEORGE
Where did you get this? You'll get dough for this, eh? We want
Mr.Big. Where's your drug lord?
The Thief sniffs at George. George grabs him by the shirt and
shows him the drug and note.
GEORGE
It's in your wallet. What the hell these figures mean?
George points at the note on the desk. The Officers as well as
the Thief turn away.
OFFICER 1
(murmurs to Stephanie)
It's too much.
Stephanie says nothing, keeping her eyes on George.
GEORGE
Don't you feel nothing? You've busted up their layout and today
fucked their stuff. Gimme a rest. You'll be out in no time,
bastard!
Stephanie interrupts George.
STEPHANIE
Lt.Blood, it's uncalled for. We are ordered to spring him.
GEORGE
The order has changed. We got a smoking gun.
OFFICER 1
But we ought to look after his right.
George turns back to the Officer 1.
GEORGE
His right! Did you say his right? How about theirs? They're
innocent guys. They live honestly and one day you gave change to
the bottom of everything and put them into chaos. Who made this?
Eh? Who made such wreck and allow these zombies to snoop around?
And say his right? Which right do you care? We've gotta pinch a
kingpin and clean up the city, right, high-tech cop?
George turns to the Thief and further interrogates him.
INT. MAYOR OFFICE - DAY
The mayor JEAN MOORE (45) sits behind her desk with displeasure.
From the window, the entire downtown can be seen beneath. Chris
stands in front of the desk, facing Moore. She keeps her stare at
Chris.
CHRIS
It's good news. They're developing a super-robot at Kinsella Ltd.
MOORE
I know. You've told me.
CHRIS
It's incredible. He walks around and speaks. He gave us a
warning when we entered the room. "Freeze. Or you'll be under
arrest."
MOORE
How many died?
CHRIS
Ha?
MOORE
How many our voters have been killed in this glitch?
CHRIS
Uh...twenty... one, accurately.
MOORE
(outraged)
Twenty one traffic accidents, only one night!
CHRIS
The people seem to take our system.
MOORE
You said a perfect traffic system. It's why I appointed you to
the top of this department.
CHRIS
It's an emergency. At the initial stage, some accidents may be
unavoidable...
MOORE
No excuse, Chris. The voters're watching us. If you fail, I
couldn't be up to the next election. If I leave this office, no
post around here for you! I hope you know it.
CHRIS
I have a suggestion.
MOORE
Don't give me any more trouble.
CHRIS
It is a new idea nobody has ever imagined.
MOORE
You always bring up stupid ideas!
CHRIS
It's good one. How about the Robot Guardian Project? You've
spent tons of money in their research.
MOORE
Yea...
CHRIS
Let them help you cut the budget. We can slim down the workforce
if their robots're available at our department.
Moore takes his proposal seriously.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - GEORGE'S CUBICLE - MORNING
Vaughm comes in and speaks to George.
VAUGHM
Hi. How are you?
GEORGE
Good. How about you? How is Janet? What happened to her?
VAUGHM
She is OK. Little in bad shape.
GEORGE
She is a nice person. What the hell gave her such sweat?
VAUGHM
Janet's working to help streeters.
GEORGE
I know.
VAUGHM
She's handing food to the vics of this commotion. Many hobos
prowled around this city and new guys're added on the street.
When Janet started delivering sandwiches, tons of small flies came
in swarm and tumbled the volunteers.
GEORGE
Oh, terrible. Things're changing through and through. What is
going on? What should we do?
VAUGHM
Yeah. Many guys're losing jobs all around the world. Internet's
taking away deals from retailers. New traffic system's pushing
out truckers and cabbies.
GEORGE
Where are we heading? Why don't they allow us to stay here?
VAUGHM
It's modern system. We'd keep on running at all times.
GEORGE
And stinkers and weasels do their own thing. Disgusting!
VAUGHM
Yeah.
GEORGE
Nowadays, the cops only care about their career. They're working
for statistics, not dudes.
VAUGHM
We've gotta be careful.
GEORGE
If we work for the right guys, we're in deep doo-doo like your
wife. Crazy!
VAUGHM
Janet is OK. She's leaving the hospital soon. She'll go back to
the downtown.
GEORGE
I want to help her. Or good guys suffering from this mess.
George shows Vaughm a piece of note where the number "488-1557"
was scribbled.
VAUGHM
You got it from the thug?
George nods and looks down at the note in his hand.
GEORGE
I've got tons of thieves and murderers. I'll never allow such
things happen to do-gooders like Janet again.
George looks up at Vaughm.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT
A group of Punks yell out and chase around a Pedestrian. When the
Pedestrian almost escapes from them, the Punks change the target
and chase around other Pedestrians with yell and laughter. At
last, they catch one Pedestrian and kick him in a group. It
swells up to a huge crowd.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - NIGHT
Stephanie answers the phone.
STEPHANIE
Street fight, again! Where? ... Okay. But we are short of
folks. Sorry, we don't think we can send you help soon ... Me?
On the way to 15th St for another dust-up. ... Injured! Oh, no.
Yes, as soon as possible.
She hangs up. George comes up.
GEORGE
Hurry up! What are you doing?
STEPHANIE
We got tons of calls.
GEORGE
Let's go.
STEPHANIE
And casualties.
GEORGE
At last! How many?
STEPHANIE
We don't know yet.
George exits before she finishes. Stephanie follows him.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT
The Punks kick the Pedestrian lying on the street. They are soon
tired of him and look around, seeking other prey. They swarm into
a building and hunt anybody up. Some of inhabitants dash out to
the street and run away, chased by a bunch of excited Punks.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
INT. PUBLIC HALL - NEXT DAY
The people have a meeting.
CITIZEN 1
They are crazy. They enjoy blow-up. Bloodless, cruel beasts.
CITIZEN 2
Definitely. They bitch anything for fun. At last, they target
our dudes. We're afraid of this. Don't let them do this any
more. Shoot them with our guns if cops stand off.
CITIZEN 3
Don't go too far. Let's think how to improve them.
CITIZEN 2
No way. Kick them off.
CITIZEN 3
They're just kids. Only a little spoiled.
CITIZEN 2
Too spoiled. They are lazy and rude.
CITIZEN 1
Right. They'll give bad influence to good kids.
CITIZEN 3
Everything's messed up these days. It's hard to get decent jobs.
CITIZEN 2
They don't like to work at all. Just walk around the street,
looking for excitement. No wonder they look for bloodbath.
The discussion goes on.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - NIGHT
ANGLE ON - TV SCREEN
We hear the mechanical sound and, on the virtual street, Riot
Police fight a severe battle with the Sunglasses. The Police
shoot the bazooka and blow up the building. The Sunglasses are
exposed, burned out and smoldering.
The Sunglasses hastily respond the Police with machine guns. But
the Police enter the building and shoot the guns. The Sunglasses
race off, throwing away the weapon.
The BOSS runs away in panic. The Police shoot him with rifles.
Each time the bullet hits the Boss, he comically jumps up with a
cry and still keeps on running.
INT. BASEMENT - DAY (CONTINUOUS)
Mechanical sound is lower but still heard. The Boss sits at the
personal computer and plays the game. The Sunglasses in black
suits look at the screen behind him, with grim expression. On the
screen, the Boss is running away. The Boss strives to let himself
on the screen escape from the bullets but completely fails.
BOSS
Shit!
The Boss smashes the desk-top computer and throws it away from the
desk.
BOSS
I've paid thousands of bucks for this. How come it gives me such
awful hits? Look at dog. Once I feed, he never barks at me.
Bastard!
The Boss kicks the computer on the floor.
BOSS
Don't kiss off my order. Shit! We got money. We got guns. We
got fucking territory. But without this kid stuff, we're gonna
lose everything.
(scared and outraged)
Get a computer. The best iron. Get a real stuff that never hit
me.
The Sunglasses rush out of the room.
Boss kicks the broken computer again. The computer screams.
INT. LABORATORY - DAY
Dr.Sage looks at the drawing on the computer console and holds his
head with the arms.
DR.SAGE
They don't understand at all.
Dr.Sage cries down onto the desk. The Robot brings a tea.
ROBOT
Dr.Sage, tea is ready.
DR.SAGE
I didn't ask tea.
ROBOT
You are tired. You'd have a break, feel relaxed and take
medicines prescribed by doctor.
DR.SAGE
Leave me alone.
ROBOT
Tea is ready for you.
DR.SAGE
I said leave me alone.
Robot turns back and moves to the different corner.
DR.SAGE
Who the hell gave him such program?
There is a knock on the door. Dr.Sage is frightened and calls the
Robot.
DR.SAGE
Come on, Romeo. Hide here. Hurry up.
Dr.Sage tries to hide the Robot under the desk. But it is too
large. Dr.Sage desperately looks around for hiding. The door is
knocked again.
ROBOT
Yes, I'm coming.
The Robot heads for the door.
DR.SAGE
No. Don't. We are not here.
ROBOT
Yes. We are.
Robot reaches the door. Dr.Sage hides under the desk. Robot
opens the door. Warren, Chris and others stand there.
ROBOT
Hello. Welcome for our laboratory. Dr.Sage said we were not
here.
WARREN
Hum, where is he?
ROBOT
Dr.Sage is under the desk. I'll tell him not to be so unsocial.
Dr.Sage gets out and comes up to them, keeping his eyes away.
DR.SAGE
Hello, everyone.
(whispers to Robot)
You disobeyed me.
ROBOT
The robot shall not follow the order if the order is supposed to
be bad.
WARREN
Dr.Sage. Are you ready?
DR.SAGE
Please. This robot is crazy. He is vicious for man.
WARREN
You're vicious for us.
DR.SAGE
We need to prevent his overrun.
CHRIS
We gotta sell out our stocks if it is not available now.
WARREN
Oh, no. Sure, it is.
(sternly to Dr.Sage)
Get them the robot.
DR.SAGE
(mumbles)
But ...
Warren motions other Engineers and they reach out their hands to
receive the drawings.
DR.SAGE
(to the Engineers)
He is not completed. You know the five law on robot? He must
thoroughly follow this law.
WARREN
We know. We know.
The Engineers bluntly take away the drawings.
WARREN
Okay, Mr.Robot. Let's go.
ROBOT
Where?
The Robot looks back Dr.Sage who cannot meet his gaze.
WARREN
For your job. You have a duty. Understand?
ROBOT
Oh, duty. I've been designed to help people. Let's go.
The Robot follows Warren and others. Dr.Sage speaks to their
back.
DR.SAGE
Please, promise. Use him with a help of operator.
WARREN
Of course. Don't mind.
ROBOT
Bye, bye, Dr.Sage.
They leave the room. Dr.Sage looks at the closed door.
FADE OUT.
END OF ACT 1
FADE IN:
EXT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - PARKING LOT - NIGHT
The patrol cars and big truck come up and stop there. The
Engineers get off the cars and bring the cargo covered with the
sheet from the truck using the crane.
WARREN
Watch out. Don't damage it.
Chris gets out of the patrol car and starts walking to the
entrance. Warren approaches him.
WARREN
Here you go. You got perfect robot.
CHRIS
(to Warren)
Lift the restriction.
WARREN
Of course. Dr.Sage is so prudent. We'll scrap any unnecessary
control.
CHRIS
How is the gunfire detection?
WARREN
Completely, perfectly ready. We'll give him this function soon.
CHRIS
Let's try him in auto mode.
WARREN
Of course. Why not?
They walk into the building.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - HALLWAY - NIGHT (CONTINUOUS)
George and Vaughm walk through the hallway.
GEORGE
It's something to do with jockey.
George shows Vaughm the thief's note. Vaughm makes a face.
VAUGHM
Huh, probably. But we have order.
GEORGE
I can't believe that. How come they've released that bastard?
They know what's going on downtown. We've gotta nailed all
carriers. They mess up this city.
VAUGHM
But Oscar is not my dog.
George sees Chris and others walk up from the corner before them.
George runs up to them, calling Chris.
GEORGE
Lt.Bolan! Lt.Bolan!
Chris and others keep walking. George catches up with them and
shows Chris the note where the figures are scribbled.
GEORGE
They're getting pot. We've gotta bust them. Look! It's the
sign. Note of trade date. 2015, May 7. Tomorrow. Let's go and
get them. We'd root out smugglers.
CHRIS
(to Warren)
When will it be ready for service?
WARREN
Before next row, of course.
CHRIS
(to George)
Don't start anything before then.
George is surprised and stops there with Vaughm. Warren
flatteringly speaks to Chris on his way.
WARREN
You can keep your cost minimum with it.
They walk down all the way through the hallway.
GEORGE
Fuck! Nothing'll help us without spunk to kick out beasts.
George looks at Vaughm. Vaughm looks embarrassed.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT
George and Vaughm are with sniff dog Oscar. Oscar sniffs around
and the two officers follow him. Some people find them and keep
watching them from the distance. Little by little, the Rabbles
approach George and others.
RABBLE 1
Look at these blue suits. They're doing this.
RABBLE 2
Yes, I have seen this on the TV shows hundred times.
RABBLE 1
They're the cops we're looking for.
George overhears them and gets on his toe. Oscar seems to get
lost.
GEORGE
C'mon, Oscar. You can make it.
RABBLE 1
Officer. Are you looking for dealer?
GEORGE
Sorry, we are on the duty.
RABBLE 1
Oh, sorry. But I saw a lot of dealers over there.
RABBLE 2
Yes, tons of dealers stroll about by day.
GEORGE
Thank you, guys. Please keep out.
George ignores them. The people talk with each other.
RABBLE 1
They are different from other blue boys.
The dog looks totally screwed up. But George cannot stop the
investigation because the people praise them aside.
RABBLE 2
If all cops are such serious, we'd not talk about vigilante.
RABBLE 1
Don't look forward. We gotta be on our own.
George overhears them and turns back.
GEORGE
Vigilante?
RABBLE 1
Yes, we're talking about it 'cause cops wimp out.
RABBLE 2
We're gonna get guns and defend us.
GEORGE
No, guys. We'll get punks. You must stand behind and just watch
our going.
RABBLE 1
Please let us do something with you.
RABBLE 2
Yes, you're working for us. We gotta stand up for you.
GEORGE
Thank you very much. But we can take care of it. No, no, not us.
This dog. So please go home.
RABBLE 1
Oh, good dog.
Oscar suddenly barks and starts running. George and Vaughm runs,
following him.
RABBLE 1
Oh, exciting.
The Rabbles follow them.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - ANOTHER STREET - NIGHT (CONTINUOUS)
They run through several streets, led by Oscar. Oscar stops in
front of a building. He barks as if he tells something important.
VAUGHM
Is it this, Oscar?
GEORGE
This is it.
George shows the note. The figure written on it matches the
address number.
VAUGHM
Good dog. Good dog.
Vaughm pats him on the neck. The Rabbles catch up with them,
holding the cameras in their hands. They take picture.
GEORGE
Please keep away. It's not movie.
Rabble 1 points up at one window of building.
RABBLE 1
That's him. I saw him sell the joint on the street.
A MAN sticks his head out of the window but pulls it in and shuts
the window when they look up at him.
GEORGE
Okay, let's go.
The Officers run into the building. The Rabbles cheer up.
INT. APARTMENT - NIGH (CONTINUOUS)
Men wait with fright, holding the guns. The released Thief is
among them. The door is pounded.
GEORGE
Police! Open the door!
The Men shoot the door. The Officers respond it. The Man runs
away from the window.
OUTSIDE THE ROOM
The room turns quiet. George and Vaughm kick the door open and
run into the room.
INSIDE THE ROOM
The Men, still within the room, fire the guns and the Officers
respond. Two Men are shot and get down on the floor. George gets
another Man before escaping through the window. George knocks him
down but Vaughm is shot by him during this battle.
George sees the released Thief running down through the ladder.
George chases him.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT (CONTINUOUS)
The Rabbles wait outside the building. The gunshot is heard.
They worry.
RABBLE 1
Where're our heroes?
RABBLE 2
Damn it. I need my gun. Not camera.
The Thief comes up and George chases him. The Thief shoots the
gun to George several times and Rabble 1 gets shot. The Thief
runs away and George chases him, leaving the wounded Rabble 1
there. Others worry about him.
RABBLE 2
Are you all right?
RABBLE 1
Oh, I am dying.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - ANOTHER STREET - NIGHT (CONTINUOUS)
George catches up with the Thief and attacks him. But the Thief
resists. When George is almost beaten, Oscar jumps to the Thief
and saves George.
George beats the Thief and at last handcuffs him.
GEORGE
C'mon, bum.
George pushes him toward the building.
GEORGE
You got the jail. You'll never get out.
Oscar leaves there before George.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT (CONTINUOUS)
The other Rabbles take care of the wounded Rabble 1. Oscar runs
up to them. Then, George takes the handcuffed Thief there. Oscar
passes them and enters the building.
RABBLE 2
You got him, officer. He shot my friend.
GEORGE
Are you all right?
RABBLE 1
Shut up. Stupid. (To George) Sure. I just fell down myself.
Oscar howls within the building. They look up at there in
surprise.
George rushes into the building. The Rabbles also enter the
building, following him.
INT. APARTMENT - NIGHT
Vaughm lies on the floor, bleeding. Oscar crouches down and
whimpers beside Vaughm. George and the Rabbles come up.
GEORGE
Vaughm, all right?
VAUGHM
(pants)
Yeah. Did you get him?
GEORGE
Don't speak.
RABBLE 2
Get an ambulance.
They move around. Oscar looks sad beside Vaughm.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - CHRIS OFFICE - DAY
George stands up in front of the Chris's desk. Chris sits on the
chair and speaks without affection on his face.
CHRIS
So, what do you want, George? You are now hero in the town.
Privilege, medal or promotion? Tell me whatever you want for your
brave investigation at the cost of three injuries.
GEORGE
I just wanted to protect the people.
CHRIS
Oh, so modest. You deserve the last hero. Soon, uncivilized
investigation will be replaced by robots. They will take care of
everything in the perfect way. We are very sorry that you can't
take a good action scene for your detective story any more.
GEORGE
They also want it over there, sir.
CHRIS
Who did you say want what?
GEORGE
The guys complain cops do nothing for their security.
CHRIS
No, they are supposed to say nothing. We'll offer the perfect
security.
GEORGE
They need the security right now. They're gonna take guns and
make the vigilante to defend themselves.
CHRIS
Oh, really! Thank you for your precious inside dope. So, you
have a big company now... Could you do me a big favor?
GEORGE
Yes, sir.
CHRIS
Please tell your brave comrades not to kill themselves in virtual
arena. Today, everything can be put under control from the
computer office. No bloodshed, no suffering, no victim. Very
civilized, eh? Both brave officers and brutal villains are
dinosaurs on our way for the gun-free society.
Chris stares at George with loathing.
EXT. BAR - NIGHT
The drunkard excitedly discuss.
RABBLE 2
Those cops are great. They fought and got wounded for us.
CITIZEN 3
It's what cops should do.
RABBLE 2
But other cops don't. We cannot hold on. We shouldn't allow the
thugs to fuck up our dudes and families.
CITIZEN 3
We can find anything else to help vags. Like, collect the
donation to give the youth job training...
RABBLE 2
It's what the pols should do.
CITIZEN 3
The mayor is working so hard to get high-tech firms in this city.
RABBLE 2
Right. She wants to run for the presidential election like her
father.
CITIZEN 3
We can push her to spend more money to save the street people.
RABBLE 2
Not enough. Get the guns.
EXT. STREET - NIGHT
ANGLE ON - TV SCREEN
The Sunglasses in ambush shoot machine guns to Riot Police. Riot
Police retreat but many are shot down. The Boss yells out.
BOSS
Fuck them up. I get it on.
INT. BASEMENT - NIGHT (CONTINUOUS)
The Boss plays the computer game.
BOSS
Beautiful. Apes're beating copper! It can happen on the screen.
The Sunglasses stand behind him. Sunglasses 1 motions Sunglasses
2.
SUNGLASSES 2
Boss.
The Boss keeps on playing the game in good mood.
SUNGLASSES 2
We have a report that the guys turned off and made a vigilante.
BOSS
(in raptures)
I've dreamed this moment since I got down to the dirty business.
Let's say it. You pushover. Eat a shit. Oh, fantastic!
SUNGLASSES 2
And we heard that the cops're making robots to get off all punks
on the street.
The Boss stops playing the game.
BOSS
Say again.
SUNGLASSES 2
Which part?
The Boss turns back and looks at the Sunglasses 2.
BOSS
Didn't you say robot?
SUNGLASSES 2
Yes, robot.
BOSS
To fuck off the punks?
SUNGLASSES 2
Yes. Not us.
The Boss turns to the computer screen. He bursts into tears.
BOSS
Oh, it's how they are. This iron lets me beat the cops. And the
cops got the robot and gonna bust me. The iron is everything.
The Boss further cries. The Sunglasses look at each other.
INT. COMPANY LABORATORY - DAY
Many engineers work on the robot for disassembly, looking at the
drawings.
CHRIS
How is it going?
WARREN
Perfect. Everything's going in schedule. We'll never miss the
next riot.
Chris nods in silence.
CHRIS
Change its voice system.
WARREN
Yes, of course.
CHRIS
He makes talk like nuts.
EXT. TEST SITE - DAY
Open site like the football ground. The Engineers check the
Robot. At a distance, the policemen including Chris look at the
Robot. Warren looks happy. The Engineer raises his hand to
signal Chris. An Officer confronts with the Robot and lifts the
rifle. The Engineers leave the Robot alone.
The Officer aims at the ground and fires the rifle. Nothing
happens. One more but nothing. Warren looks irritated.
CHRIS
Hum, great.
WARREN
(to the Officer)
Please, aim at it.
(to Chris)
We beefed it up.
The Officer shoots the Robot twice but nothing happens.
WARREN
Maybe, the flash is blocked by the smoke.
CHRIS
(to the Officer)
Get close and shoot again.
The Officer steps forward and shoots again. The bullet hits the
Robot with mechanical sound but nothing happens. Chris walks up
to the Officer in silence and takes his gun.
Chris further closes to the Robot and fires the gun several times
in a row. The Robot falls down on his back with a bang.
INT. MAYOR OFFICE - DAY
Chris and Warren sit over the mayor's desk, speaking with Moore.
MOORE
Congratulations, Warren.
WARREN
Thank you, Jean.
MOORE
We appreciate your excellent contribution to our community.
WARREN
Oh... It's too much ...
Chris signals Warren to let him tell the truth but Warren
stutters.
MOORE
I got a new idea. Do you want to hear?
WARREN
Yes. Of course.
MOORE
We're thinking about the "Robot Guardian Project." Your robots'll
be used on the street.
Chris at last interrupts her.
CHRIS
It'll take one more month for ...
MOORE
You agree with me? Yes or no?
CHRIS
Yes.
MOORE
Okay, you can go back and prepare for this project. Warren, you
could look forward more orders from us.
WARREN
Oh, what a beautiful idea!
MOORE
We'll need more robots soon. You know, it's the strategic
industry. We must lead the world in new technology. If we
succeeds in this project, we can apply robot technology to many
other areas.
CHRIS
That is to say, his company's growing up.
MOORE
Yes, because our country must be the engine of global economy.
WARREN
And it'll drive up our stock price.
Moore cannot resist a delight on her face.
INT. CITY HALL - CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY
The REPORTERs and CAMERAMEN sit down on the seats and Moore in
official attire speaks to them from the podium.
MOORE
I appreciate this opportunity you have given me to report on the
remarkable progress in our high-tech program. This program is
expected to give us a footstep for higher living standard and
greater business success. Today, for further advancement, we
would like to announce another innovative initiative in the robots
which will apply them for practical operations. We call it the
"Robot Guardian Project," aiming to keep the street safe and
clean...
INT. BAR - DAY
The drunk watch the TV in silence, looking at Moore on the screen.
CITIZEN 3
Cool. She is smart.
There is another group around a different table.
CITIZEN 1
Oh, shit! She's spending my tax like mad again.
CITIZEN 2
They think money gush out from the well.
CITIZEN 3
It's how the pols have to do. It's an answer. She can cut a loss
and get us safety. She is taking us into new era.
CITIZEN 1
Hey, are you moron? She's just looking for the Oval Office.
CITIZEN 3
She is working for us. She's fighting to clean up the street.
CITIZEN 2
Many kookish things're going on this city. We gotta clean up
dirty pols first.
CITIZEN 3
Sorry. No gun fight any more!
CITIZEN 1
Do you want to say I'm a mess?
CITIZEN 3
Why not? You are a stubborn hack.
CITIZEN 2
Shut up, you, bastard.
Other Drunk hold Citizen 3 to prevent a fight. Most of their
friends leave there and move near to the TV set.
INT. BASEMENT - DAY
The Sunglasses also watch the TV with their mouths open in
astonishment.
MOORE (V.O.)
These robots will help our good people work efficiently, enjoy
cheerfully and relax comfortably in our city...
The Boss explodes and hits the TV.
BOSS
What'll happen to bad people? If robots watch us, how can we
steal? How sleep with whore? Everyone likes illegal things. How
can we live in clean place no kids cheat math exam? Fuck it up.
For all thieves in the world, never let them go.
The Sunglasses are taken aback.
SUNGLASSES 1
(scared)
She just cracks her jaw.
BOSS
No! It's no bluff. Look at punks. They're totally on dope.
They suddenly bust everything 'cause they mix up all real things
with fucking TV game.
The Boss again smashes and destroys the computer.
BOSS
Shit! Shit! Shit! Is it the gun man gotta use for battle?
The Boss kicks and kicks the computer and then stops.
BOSS
Let louts attack anyone on the street.
SUNGLASSES 1
We can't stop them. They put the freeze on us and went to riots
at time.
BOSS
Bullshit! Bad things are much easier than good things to give.
You should know it.
The Boss storms at the Sunglasses 1.
BOSS
Tell the punks to push fucking vigilante. Fuck up them to show
Jean's desperate. Go.
The Sunglasses exit.
INT. CHRIS'S HOUSE - NIGHT
Dean lies on the coach, looking at TV. His mother SUSAN stands
beside Dean and nags at him.
SUSAN
Dean, you're messing around. What did you do today without TV and
game?
Dean makes no answer.
SUSAN
Do something better. You'd get trouble in future.
DEAN
Nothing'll be good in future.
SUSAN
Yes, a lot. Study computer. It's helpful to get job.
DEAN
They change computers soon. No use to learn. Today, I get it.
Tomorrow it's gone and new one comes. Ha, ha, ha. Let's have a
fun. Don't waste the time.
SUSAN
Don't speak this way. Your father is expecting a lot of you.
Dean suddenly bursts into an outrage.
DEAN
Shut up. I hate this. Fucking daddy!
Dean strikes Susan and continues to strike and kick her.
SUSAN
Stop it, Dean. Stop it. Please. No, help. Somebody, help me.
Susan falls down and lies on the floor. Dean comes to himself.
He sees Susan on the floor. Susan doesn't move at all. Dean is
scared and runs out of the house.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT
Two GIRLs walk down the street with a giggle. The Punks come up
from the corner and attack them in silence.
One Girl falls down there and the other runs away. The Punks get
both and hit them until some people run up, holding bats. Dean is
seen among the Punks.
INT. GEORGE'S HOUSE - NIGHT
George's wife LUCY BLOOD sees a small vacuum robot cleaning the
floor. The door is opened and George comes in.
GEORGE
Hi, Lucy.
LUCY
Look, George. I've bought it! So cute and smart, isn't it?
George looks at it with a grim face.
LUCY
This robot's cleaning house for itself. We don't need to do
nothing for housekeeping.
GEORGE
Looks expensive.
LUCY
For sale.
Lucy answers keeping her eye on the robot. George heads back for
the door.
LUCY
George, where are you going?
GEORGE
I've remembered very important case.
LUCY
Oh. Bye, bye.
GEORGE
(murmurs to himself)
I hate robots.
George exits the house.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - CONFERENCE ROOM - DAY
Chris listens to the report from his Men at the meeting.
STEPHANIE
We have eight pedestrian attacks last night alone. All cases were
very brutal and occurred suddenly without any signs.
The door is banged open and George rushes in.
STEPHANIE
It's hard to think they have happened by accident. We suspect
that someone agitate the attackers.
OFFICER 1
But we could find no influence by any organization behind a series
of incidents last time.
STEPHANIE
The difference between the last riot and these attacks is its
brutality. There was no similar crimes until last night.
GEORGE
The dealers are behind a series of attacks.
Everyone ignores George. George steps toward Chris. Chris looks
other way.
GEORGE
I got a straight dope. The dealers're making deal. They're
behind a series of assaults to screw us up.
STEPHANIE
We got no tip-off for this.
GEORGE
If we stage a bust, we can break down crime source. We shouldn't
miss this chance.
George turns back to the Officers. The Officers look other way in
unison.
GEORGE
(yells out)
I got a hot-tip. We can bust all bagmen. Move! Save the good
guys!
INT. PATROL CAR - DAY
Stephanie drives the car and George sits down next to her. George
looks irritated.
GEORGE
Everybody chicken. We can get all dealers if the men bust the
trade but they don't work. They just stay and wait.
STEPHANIE
Lt. Blood, keep silent, please.
GEORGE
What! Do you mean to order me. I'm senior, you're fucking
rookie. And say "bag it" to me? Show me get a hood, eh, high-
tech cop!
Both say nothing for a while. They see many young drunkards and
drug addicts on the street. When their car makes a turn, they see
a MAN attacked by the Punks.
GEORGE
Hey, stop the car!
Stephanie ignores George and keeps on driving.
GEORGE
Stop! A rumble! I said stop! C'mon. Let me go.
STEPHANIE
It's an order, sir. We shouldn't risk ourselves.
GEORGE
Shut up! They're killing the dude. Let's go. Stop. Stop.
STEPHANIE
We'll report the headquarters.
She turns on the walkie-talkie but George grabs the steering wheel
to turn back the car. Stephanie steps on the brake.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY (CONTINUOUS)
The patrol car comes into a grinding halt and George gets out of
it.
GEORGE
Police! Stop!
George runs up to the spot where the fight has taken place.
Stephanie stays in the car. The Punks run away leaving a wounded
Man there. Among them, George sees Dean again.
Before George reaches the wounded Man, many Bystanders come up and
take care of him.
GEORGE
(to the people)
Is he all right?
The Bystanders around the wounded Man look at George with
suspicion.
GEORGE
Get an ambulance.
The Bystanders stare at George without response. George feels
embarrassed and looks at the corner into which the Punks have run
away.
GEORGE
Wait, bastards!
George runs to the corner. The Bystanders stand there and watch
George running.
CITIZEN 4
No use to yell out after hooligans disappeared.
CITIZEN 5
Cops're chicken-hearted. They come up after checking goons are
gone.
George is surprised and looks back to meet the people's stare with
hatred. George looks at Stephanie within the car. She turns
away.
INT. LABORATORY - DAY
Dr.Sage meets Chris and Warren.
DR.SAGE
No. You'd use him with the remote control.
WARREN
It's not your business. We're waiting for the gunfire detection.
DR.SAGE
Almost done. But you aren't pushing Romeo to work alone, are you?
WARREN
No. Give us this.
DR.SAGE
Oh, poor, my Romeo. You're forced into dangerous job by tearless
slave driver.
WARREN
(clears his throat)
Romeo's working with them friendly.
DR.SAGE
Outdoor, you must be cared through the monitor but they force you
to fight rogues armed with guns.
WARREN
Do you want to lose job?
DR.SAGE
You're designed for easier tasks. You'd stay home and play the
chess rather than stroll around on the street.
CHRIS
We gotta detect guns.
DR.SAGE
Do you expect the robots to fight villains, officer? Forget it.
The robots can never confront humans.
WARREN
Why not?
DR.SAGE
Because human has much higher level intelligence. Robot doesn't
reach our level.
WARREN
Oh, we know, we know.
DR.SAGE
No, you don't. I strive to give him some flexibility but it's
incredibly hard. We still don't know exact ability of humans. We
hide mysterious power in our unconscious part and it helps us at
critical moment. Robots can never exert such unexpected power.
They move around as we've programmed. Do you know what it means?
They only follow our order and don't care about the result of
their action. Like an operator cannot stop the missile after he
presses the button, we cannot stop them once we start some action.
It's terrible, especially, if we give machine higher ability. So,
I gave Romeo a little idleness, which makes him slow. But it's
much better than straight.
Warren and Chris don't understand and wryly stare at Dr.Sage.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - CHRIS OFFICE - DAY
Stephanie excitedly reports Chris.
STEPHANIE
You are right, sir. As you anticipated, he jumped out of the car
to fight punks. But too late. George's not a hero any more.
They blamed him for our negligence.
CHRIS
There's no negligence here.
STEPHANIE
Oh! They blamed George for all we should do and prepare to do
later.
CHRIS
Soon.
STEPHANIE
Soon.
CHRIS
It's how the society functions.
STEPHANIE
Yes. George'd have learned the lesson.
Stephanie flatteringly smiles at Chris.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY
The Sunglasses 1 takes out many guns from his attachécase and show
the Punks.
SUNGLASSES 1
Who want to try irons?
The Punks look at the guns and get excited.
DEAN
Oh, fabulous! It's real.
SUNGLASSES 1
Show us your guts.
The Sunglasses 1 hands a gun to Dean. Dean fanatically laughs.
He dances and jumps around, showing off the gun.
After the guns are handed, all of them do the same and go away.
SUNGLASSES 1
Hold on, moron. I have something to tell you. Wait, bastards.
The Punks don't listen at all and disappear no sooner than they
get the guns. The Sunglasses fires the gun but they are too
excited to get scared.
SUNGLASSES 1
Easy to give them bad influence but can we keep our grip?
The Sunglasses 1 looks at the empty street.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - ANOTHER STREET - DAY
A little GIRL and MOTHER walk on the street. The Punks suddenly
appear from the corner and shoot the guns at random. The Girl
cries. The Pedestrians are aware of it.
CITIZEN 6
Look at it.
CITIZEN 7
Oh, no.
They run up to the Mother and Girl to save them. The Punks fire
the guns at random and threaten the people. They don't aim at
anyone. Among them, Dean fanatically laughs and dances, shooting
his gun to the sky.
The people take the Mother and Girl into the house nearby. Then
other people shoot the Punks from the buildings.
DEAN
Oh, God'mn hot. It's like real ball.
He shoots back. Both exchange the gunfires. The Sunglasses 1
sees them from a distant corner, with embarrassment.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - DAY (MOMENT LATER)
The Punks fire their guns at random. They don't hit anyone at
all.
CITIZEN 1
Shoot him at their legs.
They aim at the Punks.
Some Punks fall down and others are scared. Some run away.
The Sunglasses 2 appears from behind them and shoots the machine
gun.
SUNGLASSES 2
Hold out, cowards.
Someone seems to set fire at the buildings and fire can be seen.
CITIZEN 1
Oh, damn it!
CITIZEN 2
They're burning my house.
They shoot the Punks but the Sunglasses 2 fires the machine gun.
Dean and others also fire their guns, anyway.
INT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - CHRIS OFFICE - DAY
Chris and other Officers in anti-bullet vest prepare to go out for
battle. Plainclothes George dashes into the room with a rifle.
GEORGE
The riot again? I told you so.
The Officers give him cool glare and keep on checking their arms.
GEORGE
Don't be scared, Stephanie. I'll show you shooting. Let's go and
blow off suckers.
Chris looks at other Officers.
CHRIS
Ready?
OFFICERS
Yes.
Chris heads for the door and other Officers follow him.
GEORGE
Where is the riot?
CHRIS
You stay here. It's order.
STEPHANIE
Time for the high-tech operation.
George is taken aback. The others exit.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT
The Sunglasses 2 fires the machine gun furiously. Beside him, the
Punks sometimes fire the guns but they look tired. The Riot
Police confront them but make no response.
PUNK 1
I'm bored at this game.
PUNK 2
Ya, this game is strange.
PUNK 3
Definitely. I got this dildo there. But it still lies and
disturbs our play.
PUNK 2
And those cops. What are they up to? Disgusting. They don't
know what they ought to at all.
A big truck arrives there. Everyone looks at it in surprise.
PUNK 1
What's going to happen?
The sheet is removed to unveil the Robot. The Sunglasses are
frightened.
PUNK 1
Look at it.
PUNK 2
Cool! It's a robot!
They forget to shoot the guns and just watch it.
Chris signals the Engineers and one of them presses the switch on
the back of Robot. The Robot starts moving.
PUNK 1
Unbelievable. It's moving. A real robot!
They stand up to look at it carefully. The Robot steadily
approaches them. The Punks wave to the Robot. Some of them try
to dash toward it but others block them.
Warren speaks to Chris with a smile.
WARREN
Let's try auto mode.
Some of Sunglasses run away. But suddenly the Robot stops on the
half way. Everyone holds his breath.
PUNK 1
What happens?
Sunglasses 1 shoots the robot.
SUNGLASSES 1
Get it, bastard.
The Robot stands still there.
SUNGLASSES 1
Shoot it. Quitter.
All of the Sunglasses shoot it. In response, the Robot turns back
and runs away from them at full speed.
SUNGLASSES 1
(laughs)
Look at this trash. It's a wuss like cops.
The Sunglasses and Punks laugh and shoot the Police. The Riot
Police retreat. Chris looks at Warren in silence. Warren is
unnerved.
WARREN
The remote controller is the answer.
The Riot Police shoot the guns to respond the Sunglasses.
Another truck arrives and Dr.Sage gets out of it.
DR.SAGE
Oh, no! What are you doing to my Romeo!
Other Engineers bring the big remote control equipment there,
which looks like a video game machine.
WARREN
Hurry up. Hurry up.
(to Dr.Sage)
Don't worry. We've made him stronger.
DR.SAGE
No. Don't push him around. You are killing my Romeo!
CHRIS
Hurry up. Let it make his way there.
DR.SAGE
Oh, stop it!
Dr.Sage cries out and covers his eyes with his palms. Warren
powers on the remote controller. The fire exchange continues
between Sunglasses and Riot Police.
MACHINE
We are ready for operation. Press any button on the front panel.
Warren presses one button and the controller machine starts
working.
WARREN
It's working.
DR.SAGE
No, let him back.
The LEDs and lamps flash on the front panel for a couple minutes.
Then the machine makes ready.
MACHINE
The robot is not in right mode. Check the robot and press any
button.
Warren presses a button. The Robot appears in front of the remote
controller. The Sunglasses stop shooting and gaze at the Robot in
panic. The Punks also look at them in excitement.
Warren presses another button.
MACHINE
You've pressed wrong button. Press right button. Otherwise, we
will exit the operation.
WARREN
God damn.
The Robot remains still. The Sunglasses yell out and shoot to the
Police furiously.
EXT. POLICE DEPARTMENT - NIGHT
George runs out of the building and gets on the patrol car parked
there. The Policemen run after him from the building but George
starts the car.
INT. PATROL CAR - NIGHT
George drives the car, holding the rifle at one hand.
GEORGE
I'm coming. Wait for the knight of the knights, crumbums and
softy cops!
He uses the steering wheel but the wheel automatically works.
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - NIGHT
The Sunglasses shoot the guns. A bunch of people surround the
machine. Warren struggles with it. He presses one button.
WARREN
That's it. It's working.
The LEDs start flashing again. The Robot turns back and again
steadily approaches the Sunglasses. They stop shooting.
SUNGLASSES 2
Oh, no!
PUNK 1
It's coming!
The Punks stand up and wave to the Robot. Some Sunglasses run
away. The Sunglasses 1 yells out.
SUNGLASSES 1
Come back, cowards. If you blow the joint, boss'll kill you.
The Sunglasses keep on running. The Sunglasses 1 looks back in
fright to check out the Robot.
The Robot staggers like a drunkard.
Warren tightly holds the steering stick. An alert tone sounds and
frightens Warren.
MACHINE
You are misleading the robot. Keep the robot on the right track.
Right track. I said right track.
WARREN
Shut up. I know. I'm trying.
Stephanie pushes Warren out and takes over the machine. She
operates the machine better.
The robot smoothly walks to the Sunglasses.
SUNGLASSES 2
Oh, no! It's coming!
The Punks cheer up. More Sunglasses run away.
The Police are excited.
WARREN
Okay! Let's go, Romeo.
DR.SAGE
Oh, no! My Romeo. Please stop it!
The Robot steadily approaches the Sunglasses. The Sunglasses 1
lifts the gun, shivering and aiming at the Robot but before he
fires, the Robot passes the Sunglasses and walks into the corner.
Everyone keeps their eyes on the corner in surprise.
Stephanie quickly pushes the buttons on the front panel.
MACHINE
You are pressing wrong button. Press the right button. Right
button. Right button. Right button...
STEPHANIE
Shut up. Asshole.
She kicks the machine.
The Sunglasses come back and resume shooting the police.
Suddenly the Robot reappears from the corner. The Sunglasses stop
firing and keeps their eyes on the Robot in astonishment. It
again steadily approaches the Sunglasses.
SUNGLASSES 1
Easy does it. It's foolish.
The Punks start waving to the Robot. Most Sunglasses are
terrified and make ready to run.
Stephanie kicks the controller again and again. Each time she
kicks it, the Robot steps forward and approaches the Sunglasses.
From the same corner, George suddenly comes up following the
Robot. George brandishes the rifle and shouts out.
GEORGE
Keep out. It's a killer robot.
Everybody turns to George. Most Sunglasses screams while the
Punks are delighted.
GEORGE
Nobody can control this idiot. It'll kill anyone within reach.
SUNGLASSES 1
You liar!
The Sunglasses 1 points his gun to George. George shoots the
rifle to the sky. The Robot runs away from George at full speed,
toward the Sunglasses.
SUNGLASSES 1
Oh, my God!
The Sunglasses and Punks race off. The policemen are encouraged
and chase them all together.
FADE OUT:
FADE IN:
EXT. DOWNTOWN - STREET - MORNING
Janet and Toby deliver sandwiches and drink to the victims.
JANET
God bless you.
At the square nearby, many people talk over the coffee.
CITIZEN 3
It's a wonderful robot. Did you see that?
DEAN
Of course. Much closer than you.
CITIZEN 1
It's terrible. Incredible that the cops permit such killer
machine.
CITIZEN 2
Right. Cop must put the designer into the jail.
CITIZEN 3
We're proud of it. Now, this city is okay. Completely safe.
PUNK 1
Definitely.
INT. MAYOR OFFICE - DAY
Moore sits behind the desk. Chris stands, facing her. Moore
looks happy.
MOORE
Good job, Chris. I'm satisfied.
CHRIS
Thank you. But many problems...
MOORE
So, what's your next plan?
CHRIS
We should check the robot and...
MOORE
Around-the-clock sentinel.
CHRIS
Excuse me?
MOORE
Let it walk through the street twenty-four hours.
CHRIS
But we failed in auto mode.
MOORE
The robot is so popular now. Give the voters more accesses to it
and we can make them happy.
CHRIS
I see.
MOORE
Any more report to please me?
Mayor Moore gives Chris a stare and Chris cannot but exit. Moore
slyly smiles.
