Technical Sergeant Jerry H. Sherrill spent 21 years proudly serving in the United States Military.  A vast majority of that time was spent in the United States Air Force, where Sergeant Sherrill played an instrumental role in the struggle against communism known as, "The Cold War."
    Sergeant Sherrill comes from a long and distinguished line of military men who bravely served this country for five generations dating back to the Civil War when his grandfather bravely fought for the republic.
    Technical Sergeant Jerry H. Sherrill (Ret.) entered the Army in 1945.   He was inspired to join by his uncle, 1st Sergeant E. R. Sherrill, who was had a distingueshed career in the Army. Private Sherrill received basic training at Fort Lewis, Washington, and then graduated to a combat engineer training course on the base.  Private Sherrill's skills learned during childhood allowed him to excell in the�markmanship, tracking, and survival portions of the course, and consequently Private Sherrill soon became an acting Corporal.
    In December of 1945, Sherrill transferred into the Army Air Force, where he seved as a company clerk.  He then transferred to Topeka Air Force Base in Topeka, Kansas, where he was involved with administration.  In the spring of 1946, Private Sherrill became a Corporal and served in the 1377 Army Air base located in Westover, Massachusetts.  In 1947, he was again transferred to Hickam Army Air Force base in Hawaii, where the climate was much improved.  At Hickam, a call went out for the "sharpest young black Corporal in the military."  This call was answered by Corporal Sherrill, who packed his bags and reported to the headquarters of Colonel Bean, in the personnel section of the base.  Corporal Sherrill became Aid De Camp for Colonel Bean at Wing Headquarters in Hickam, and�began to advance up the Air Force ranks.  In late 1950, Sergeant Sherrill joined Strategic Air Force Command at McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas.
