Parish of Colwyn Bay
Holy Baptism
HOLY BAPTISM also known as CHRISTENING

Holy Baptism is the rite by which we are made members of the Church. Usually children are brought for baptism when they are babies but increasingly Holy Baptism is administered to adults who were not baptsaied as children.

INFANTS
If you would like your child to be baptised please contact the clergy to arrange a suitable time for the service. The child will need Godparents. The tradition has been that boys have two Godfathers and one Godmother and girls have two Godmothers and one Godfather. However what is most important is that the Godparents chosen are aware of their responsibilities in helping to bring up the child in the Christian faith - to nurture them, pray for them and support them. Godparents themselves should be baptised as they have to make a Christian commitment themselves on behalf of the child.

ADULTS
It is customary for adult candidates for baptism to have one or two sponsors who again will support them through their faith journey. Sponsors should already be baptised. The clergy will guide the candidates for baptism through the service and help to explain the commitment that baptism implies for Christians.

PROMISES
During the baptism service candidates (or their Godparents) will make the following promises and commitment to the faith:

Do you turn to Christ? I turn to Christ
Do you repent of your sins? I repent of my sins
Do you reject evil? I reject evil

Do you believe and trust in God, who made you and all life?
I believe and trust in him.
Do you believe and trust in his Son Jesus Christ, who redeemed you and all the world?
I believe and trust in him.
Do you believ and trus in his Holy Spirit, who gives life to you and all the people of God?
I believe and trust in him.
