| KELLY'S LETTER PUBLISHED IN COLUMBUS DISPATCH ON 9/9/4 | ||||
| 9/11 has been reduced to sales pitch of GOP Thursday, September 09, 2004 As expected, the first night of the Republican National Convention featured a heavy dose of speakers and imagery recalling the terrorist attack of Sept. 11, 2001. I find it disgusting that Republicans are turning 9/11 into their own private issue. The heroism and sacrifices of the firefighters, police officers and ordinary citizens who died that day have nothing to do with President Bush. Bush would like to use this national tragedy for his own political profit. But what exactly did he do that day? What has he done since then for the families of the victims of 9/11? He opposed the formation of the 9/11 commission, a movement led by the families of the victims themselves; he stalled the testimony of members of his administration before that same commission; and he let 3 years go by without proposing any significant reform of our antiterrorism capabilities. How dare he now use that tragedy as a convenient backdrop for his reelection campaign. KELLY Columbus |
