So why call the club the "Columbus Light Horse"?  The answer is quite simple.  A majority of the Aussie Rules teams here in America have Australian namesakes.  CLH has chosen to follow suite.  The Light Horse is the traditional Australian cavalry.  The cavalry is typically a fast and aggressive unit used for a variety of purposes dependant upon the needs of the battlefield.  Often pressed into recon duty, they prefer to lead the attack and exploit the softer rear positions of the enemy.  They use power and precision to break the heavy front lines and then use speed to run wild in the back lines.

While the term "light horse" is not particularly Australian (there are units in the United States and Canada, and some have claimed the term was coined by the Mongols), the Aussies brought real honor and distinction to the term during World War One (WWI).

In particular the 13th Light Horse Regiment is where much of the clubs symbolism, including our team colors has come from.  The 13th Regiment was known as "the devil's own" and fought with courage and honor in both the Middle East (at Gallipoli) and in Western Europe (France) throughout WWI.  Often these mounted soldiers volunteered to fight as infantry due to the necessity of the environment or the demands of thier countrymen.
