Columbine High School Shooting: What Lies Beneath
Reasons for working on this subject
"Even in death, Hitler is still killing." -  Nobel Laureate & Holocaust survivor.
"They wanted to shoot to have fun. They are sick people." -  Columbine HS student Nick Loss.
The above quotations evoke in our minds the memories of that fateful day, 20/4/1999, when Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris, students of Columbine High School, went around the school campus on a shooting rampage. 12 students were killed in the process, with the 2 shooters claiming their own lives at the end.
Epitomized in the 2 quotations stated are possible reasons for the murderous actions undertaken by the shooters. Many are tempted to believe that the killings took place for no clear reasons, as implied by the 2nd quotation. The most popular explanation stated that the shooters were outcasts in their school and regularly teased, especially by the athletes. While we acknowledge that the above reason could be the possible trigger for the shootings, a very basic question remains unanswered: "What was the factor or factors that ultimately drove them to express their anger and frustration in such a violent and horrendous manner?" Our group seeks to find the answer to that question.
Our group chose to work on this topic not only because of the intriguing mystery that surrounds the reason that would enlighten us to why the shooters did what they did, but also because we see the relevance of this incident to many societies around the world, especially in Japan.
Besides looking at print and electronic sources for evidence to substantiate the topic of our project, media influence on violence, we conducted surveys to further prove our belief that the trivialization of violence by the media indeed has a numbing effect on the minds of youths today, increasing the tendency of violence being committed.
