Digital TV - Plasma and LCD HDTV Monitors
Compare SONY HDTV Features

Consumer electronics manufacturers such as Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba and others have developed flat-panel display TV sets, using gas plasma and LCD display technologies which are slowly gaining ground on the ubiquitous CRT television of the past 50 plus years. At the same time, new digital TV standards are leading us into the era of high-definition programming, which eventually will replace analog broadcasts.

About 10% of U.S. households have digital TVs. But that number is expected to jump to at least 65% by 2008 as prices fall and broadcasting digital programs becomes mainstream. The top factors influencing American TV buyers are screen size and price. The HDTV market is moving from early adopters who want a TV mounted on a wall to the early majority that places a greater priority on the largest picture at the lowest price.

Consumers are trying to determine how technologies such as digital light processing (DLP), liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS), LCD, and CRT differ. All these technologies look good. TV makers appear most optimistic about LCD technology in all types of sets. Huge new LCD-panel factories are coming online which will lower prices. LCD sets also cost less to manufacture, since the technology has been around longer as an extension of LCDs for personal computers.

LCDs generally have a longer lifespan than rival technologies, are less power-hungry, and have fewer flaws. New sets like Sharp's 45-inch LC-45GX6U and Samsung's 46-inch LT-468W offer the highest resolutions capable for digital TVs -- 1,920 pixels by 1,080 pixels.

Still, plasmas are the early favorite with shoppers. In many cases, a plasma picture is brighter than an LCD, and fast-moving video displayed on plasma sets doesn't suffer from the jagged images that appear as LCDs try to show fast-moving pictures.

But plasma displays give many buyers some doubt because they lose brightness over time and don't work in altitudes above 7,000 feet because their internal gases can't tolerate that height, and they're prone to burn-in, where static images can appear as permanent ghosts if they're left on the screen too long.

TV display technology is changing so fast that what's true today won't necessarily be applicable a year from now. Plasma manufacturers are adding software that imperceptibly moves the picture a fraction to help avoid burn-in.

LCDs are getting bigger and brighter. New LCD sets coming to market in the next year will feature backlit, light-emitting diode (LED) technology that offers the same vivid colors of plasma.

"CableCard ready" or DCR for "Digital Cable Ready" sets, build a digital-cable set-top box right into the TV. There's some debate about how popular this feature will be with providers such as Comcast and Time Warner. But in theory, it lets you do away with digital set-top boxes with some possible drawbacks.

With CableCard-ready sets and CableCard-ready set-top digital video recorders, you should be able to move to any area served by a cable provider and ask them to mail you an access card to insert directly into the unit to get programming.

2003-2004

During the 2003-2004 timeframe, digital TV for consumers was characterized by televisions which were capable of High-Definition (HDTV) and standard-definition (SDTV) but were typically not built with an ATSC tuner inside. Many had a NTSC tuner, but required a set-top-box of some kind for HDTV. Plasma displays of bigger and wider proportions were the rage while LCD and other display technologies made significant strides forward.

Sony was one manufacturer of large TV monitors and they produced plasma, LCD and other type TV sets. The plasma and LCD flat panel displays can be hung on a wall and are impressive if for no other reason than the sheer size of the screen. The old 27" CRT just is not enough anymore and pales in comparison to the wide-screen, bright, crystal clear video monitors that come in 32", 42" and the almost overwhelming 50" screen sizes.

Sony KE42TS2 42" Plasma TV Monitor

The KE-42TS2's wide-screen design is perfect for DVD movies and HDTV programs (to receive HDTV broadcasts, you must connect an HDTV tuner). Non-HD signals get a big boost in quality from Sony's latest video upconversion circuitry. As a final step, Sony's Digital Pixel Generator™ System "scales" (converts) signals from all of your video sources so that they precisely match the panel's 1024 x 1024-pixel resolution for the best possible picture. The exception is when you feed the TV a 1080i signal from an HDTV tuner. Because 1080i is so close to the panel's native 1024i resolution, 1080i programs are displayed without any vertical scaling — you see 1024 out of the 1080 lines. The few lines of information at the top and bottom of the image that are discarded are insignificant (naturally the image still completely fills the screen). But the clarity and detail gained from cutting out one conversion step is very significant.

Key Features :

A/V inputs : composite, S-video, component video, and DVI connections.

To help you make the most of the TV's widescreen design (and to reduce the chance of image burn-in), Sony included several picture display options. By stretching and/or zooming a conventional squarish 4:3 program, you can make it fill up this panel's wide screen. Other image-adjustment options include color temperature control, and five picture presets tailored for viewing conditions ranging from watching a ballgame in bright daytime lighting to savoring a movie at night with the lights turned low.

ALIS (Alternate Lighting of Surfaces) Technology: This technology alternates and shares the electrodes used to drive each pixel. In doing this, since there are fewer horizontal electrodes on the panel face and no nonluminous gaps between them, the pixel cells can be larger, which still allows for higher resolution. At the same time, since the cells are larger and they form unbroken vertical strips, they can emit more light with less driving power. This makes the panel reliable and equal in brightness to other designs.

Digital Pixel Generator System: Sony's unique Digital Pixel Generator System utilizes cutting-edge digital signal processing technologies to maximize display performance and reproduce natural, rich images, especially from high-definition sources. All signals are transmitted and processed entirely in the digital domain, minimizing picture degradation.

Pixel by Pixel I/P Conversion: This interlace to progressive technology constructs a film or video scene one pixel at a time for fluid, life-like motion and superb image detail.

CineMotion Reverse 3/2 Pulldown Processing: This function minimizes motion artifacts and optimizes film-based content from any video input for the purest reproduction of film-originated sources.

Native Resolution: The KE-42TS2U has a display resolution of 1024 x 1024. The DVI-HDTV, component video and RGB inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p, and will display them as 1024 x 1024. All other input signals will also be displayed as 1024 x 1024.

Note: All signals are converted to 1024 x 1024, except 1080i. Instead of converting a 1080i signal, the TV displays the signal as is, simply cutting off a few lines of pixels on the top and bottom.

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following Picture modes:

Wide Screen Modes: Using the Wide Mode button on the remote, you can manually cycle through the Wide Screen modes. If you want the TV to automatically select the Wide Screen mode, you can choose one of the Auto Wide Mode settings, Mode1 or Mode2. In Mode1, the TV will display a picture with its original aspect ratio. In Mode2, the TV will automatically select the best Wide Screen mode for the incoming signal. The following Wide Screen modes are available: Effect Modes: You can select one of the following Effect modes:

Sony's 2nd-generation KE-42TS2 plasma TV. This is a completely integrated plug-and-play TV — it includes an NTSC (analog) tuner, stereo speakers, and a tabletop stand.

The KE-42TS2's widescreen design is "picture perfect" for DVD movies and HDTV programs (to receive HDTV broadcasts, you must connect a separate HDTV tuner). Non-HD signals get a big boost in quality from Sony's latest video upconversion circuitry. As a final step, Sony's Digital Pixel Generator™ System "scales" (converts) signals from all of your video sources so that they precisely match the panel's 1024 x 1024-pixel resolution for the best possible picture at all times.

To accommodate a wide variety of video sources, you'll find four A/V inputs including composite, S-video, component video, and DVI connections.

The supplied stand is a rounded pedestal design that provides a graceful look on a tabletop, or on Sony's matching SU-TS1 A/V stand. Or you can remove the stand and wall-mount the TV (hardware not included, with Sony's WB-PW2 wall-mount bracket).

The wide assortment of inputs on the back panel of the Media Receiver Unit includes two HD-capable component video inputs, plus a digital DVI input for compatibility with new-generation satellite HDTV tuners. You'll also find composite and S-video connections for your other video gear. A single "umbilical cord" connects the Media Receiver Unit to the LCD panel, keeping the look of your installation simple and clean.

This versatile TV also includes a Memory Stick® slot that lets you view digital photos.

Key Features

Features

LCD Panel Driver IC: The LCD panel driver IC improves screen response time using proprietary Sony digital technology. By improving the response time in the middle luminance range, "afterimage" in motion pictures is significantly reduced, resulting in smoother movement of images on the screen.

HD Detailer Wideband Video Amplifier: All televisions have a video amplifier, the device that takes the original video source and "amplifies" it to deliver a useable signal to your television screen. The bandwidth rating of a video amplifier determines the amount of detail that can be displayed on a television. Sony's HD Detailer wideband video amplifier delivers great detail on even the finest images by getting the most out of high-bandwidth sources, such as the 1080i signal available from some set-top boxes and satellite feeds.

Native Resolution: The DVI-HDTV input will accept 1080i, 720p, and 480p, and will display them as 1280 x 768. The component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p, and will display them as 1280 x 768. All other input signals will also be display as 1280 x 768.

Twin View: Using the Multi-Image Driver, Twin View allows you to watch two programs side-by-side with the ability to zoom in on one picture and listen to the program in the selected window. You can watch pictures from two different sources (1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i) simultaneously.

Note: Only the left Twin View window can display 1080i, 720p, and 480p sources.

Favorite Channel Preview: This feature allows you to preview up to 8 favorite channels without leaving the current channel.

Freeze Function: This function allows you to temporarily capture a program's picture. The display switches to Twin View mode and displays the "frozen" picture on the right, while the current program continues on the left. This function only works in normal view mode; if you are in Twin View mode already, it will not work.

Sony Wega Media Receiver Box

Picture Modes: You can select one of the following Picture modes:

Wide Screen Modes: You can select a default screen mode to use for 4:3 sources. While watching a channel, you can use the Wide Mode button to cycle through the wide screen modes. If the 4:3 Default is set to anything but Off, the wide screen mode setting changes only for the current channel. When you change channels, the wide mode is automatically replaced with the 4:3 Default setting. You can choose from the following screen wide screen mode options:

Vertical Center: This feature allows you to move the position of the picture up and down in the window.

Vertical Size: This feature allows you to adjust the vertical size of the picture.

Audio Effect Modes: You can select one of the following audio Effect modes:

Steady Sound: This feature stabilizes the volume level, preventing unwanted blasts of sound during commercials.

Sleep Timer: The sleep timer switches the television off after a specified amount of time. The sleep timer can be set to 15, 30, 45, 60 or 90 minutes.

Timers: This unit has two timers that can be set by day, time, duration, and channel.

Memory Stick Playback (JPEG): The media receiver has a front-panel Memory Stick slot to let you easily view your JPEG images. You can choose from an index of the images stored on the Memory Stick, or you can run a slideshow of those images. You can also customize the features of the slideshow by selecting the length of time that each image is displayed, toggling the display of file information, and rotating each image.

Note: The media receiver's Memory Stick viewer is compatible with Memory Sticks up to and including 128MB. It is not compatible with Memory Sticks that exceed 128MB.

Wall Mounting: You can mount this display on the wall using the optional SU-PW1 wall-mount bracket.

Remote Control

Multibrand Remote: The supplied remote is pre-programmed to operate this unit and a number of functions on other brands of A/V components, including VCRs, laserdisc players, DVD players, cable boxes, and satellite receivers.

Inputs and Outputs

System Connections: The display has a white DVI-D input and black proprietary 26-pin input and the media receiver has a white DVI-D output and black proprietary 26-pin output. The components are connected using the supplied display interface cable.

DVI-HDTV In: This input consists of stereo RCA jacks and a DVI-D terminal. The DVI-D terminal can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices (such as digital set-top boxes) that have compatible interfaces. The DVI-D terminal is compliant with the EIA-861 standard and is not intended for use with personal computers.

Note: The DVI-HDTV input will accept 1080i, 720p, and 480p.

Component Video Inputs: The component video inputs will accept 1080i, 720p, 480i and 480p.

Monitor Out: The monitor output consists of stereo RCA jacks, an RCA composite video jack and an S-video jack. This output lets you record the program you are watching to a VCR.

Subwoofer Output: The subwoofer RCA jack allows you to add a powered subwoofer to this display.

Dimensions

2005

The 2005 timeframe saw prices generally coming down for comparable models and the introduction of integrated (built-in) ATSC tuners along with newer models which solved some of the problems present with previous models such as plasma display's high altitude operation. More LCD models are being produced with bigger screens. Also there are more options for connecting components. The HDMI all digital connection is available and audio output ports from the TV are present along with a subwoofer output. Cable TV subscribers have an option for discarding the set-top-box and using the CableCard slot built-in to digital cable ready sets. The native resolution in some sets is getting closer to true HDTV. A few displays even have the 1920x1080i resolution or the 1280x720p resolution of true HDTV which means no scaling or down-conversion is required. Built-in DVR (digital video recorder) with hard disk drive for recording TV shows is available on the 50 inch plasma models and also the IEEE-1394 digital connections for digital camcorders. Memory card slots are becoming common so you can show your photos on the big screen.

Sony KLV-S32A10

The single-chip video processor used by the Sony KLVS32A10 integrates a 3D comb filter with a motion-adaptive IP converter, improving picture contrast and detail while reducing video noise and image blur. And you get that incredible picture both from TV inputs and computer inputs. There's a dedicated PC analog RGB HD 15 jack that allows you to display VGA, SVGA, XGA, or WXGA computer inputs on the KLVS32A10's spectacular 26" screen. Your computer's audio signal is handled by a stereo mini-jack (3.5 mm). When you're watching TV or DVDs, all signals are displayed at the screen's 1366 x 768 native resolution so you won't lose any detail from a high definition video source. And with the new WEGA Gate Easy Operation guide, you can navigate to the most convenient TV functions like favorite channels, channel list, external input, or settings using the multibrand remote control. Favorite Channel lets you store and quickly access eight of your favorite channels and each of the six video inputs can be labeled with actual names like DVD, Satellite, or VCR instead of Video 1, Video 2, or Video 3.

The LCD WEGA flat panel television opens up a wide spectrum of entertainment possibilities. Complete with a built-in NTSC Standard TV tuner, this 16:9 aspect ratio monitor is built to HDTV standards, meaning it's capable of displaying high-definition and enhanced-definition TV signals. (A separate ATSC HDTV tuner/decoder--not included--is required to receive HD or ED programming.) Designed to meet your viewing needs now and into the digital future, the KLVS32A10 is compatible with all the most popular current and up-and-coming display formats (480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i). With Picture Mode you can select Vivid, which enhances the contrast and sharpness; Standard, for typical viewing environments; or Pro, which displays the picture like a professional monitor with minimal enhancements. Dynamic Picture circuitry works to maintain image detail in the very bright or very dark areas of the image, while Light Sensor measures ambient light in the room and adjusts the picture brightness to match the light level.

Audio Output : gives you the option of sending your television's audio to an external sound system and either controlling the volume through your receiver/amplifier (fixed output) or through your TV (variable output).

HDMI

The KLVS32A10 offers an array of connections, including HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface), the latest single-cable digital-to-digital connection, that provides an uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface between this TV and any other HDMI-equipped A/V components like a set-top box, DVD player, or A/V receiver. HDMI accepts 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals and is backwards compatible with DVI connections by using an adapter (not included). The component video inputs also accept 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i signals, and there are S-Video and composite video inputs available as well.

Sony mounts the KLVS32A10 on a removable tabletop stand, which allows 15 degrees swivel left and right, 3 degrees forward (down) tilt, and 8 degrees back (up) tilt. There's an included support belt that bolts to the base of the stand and is attached to the back of the shelf where the TV is located. If you prefer, there are mounting holes on the back of the TV for an optional (not included) wall-mount bracket. The spacing of the mounting holes and the optional wall-mount bracket both comply to industry standards set by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association).

Key Features of the Sony KDE-42XS955 42" Plasma Monitor

Sony Plasma Technology

WEGA Engine System Plasma TV - Various signals such as RF standard definition broadcasts, composite video, component video, high definition video (interlaced or progressive) and even Memory Stick images benefit from this process. The WEGA Engine system converts all signals into the digital domain and applies an entire system of processes. The result? Better resolution and sharpness, higher contrast, less digital noise, and greater picture dimension.

Cinemotion Reverse 3-2 Pulldown Technology preserves the integrity of movie film frames to create great images.

MID-X Multi Image Driver Circuitry is specially designed for fixed pixel displays. It performs two major functions scaling all incoming standard and high definition signals to the configuration of the panel without degrading signal quality, and providing unique Twin-View scalable picture-and-picture features once impossible for fixed pixel displays. Watch SD and HD on the same screen at the same time.

DRC (Digital Reality Creation) MultiFunction Circuitry Unlike conventional, line doublers, the DRC Multifunction feature replaces the signal’s NTSC waveform with the near-HD equivalent by digital mapping processing. The DRC Palette option lets you customize the level of detail (Reality) and smoothness (Clarity) to create up to three custom palettes.

Convenience Features
