Dude, Where's my Car? (PG-13) - 12/19/00 at Dole Two dudes wake up one morning not remembering what they did the night before but they somehow recall that the gifts for their year anniversary with their girlfriends are in their car. However, the car is not parked where it should be and so they go on a search. Along the way, they meet space aliens, and also find out what they were up to while they were drunk and stoned. Personally, I think that this is a pretty disgusting movie. It is unrealistic and consists of coarse humor, although it was probably produced for the laughs. There is way too much emphasis on certain bodily aspects. If you are looking for a quality movie, don't see this. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. VH, RD
The Others - August 20, 2001 at Ward - PG 13 First movie I saw in a theater since January. This isn't the kind of movie I'd normally go to watch but I wanted to see Wenjing before she leaves. It was kind of scary but in a way funny too. Maybe I'll do a better review for this later. Would I recommend it? It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be but I think that some ideas in the movie are skewed. Nah, I wouldn't recommend it though it wasn't the worse movie I've seen. WL and cuzins
Gladiator (R) - 12/16/00 - DVD player at Karina's house **** Excellent movie! Although it is bloody, the main character is quite honorable and the plot is excellent. I think that it is only rated R for the violence, nothing else that would be considered too bad. I would recommend this movie though I don't think it's playing in theaters anymore. See, it received four stars from me while the "Dude" one didn't get any.. :)
Miss Congeniality (PG-13) - 12/22/00 at Kahala ***** A tomboyish, unrefined and violent FBI agent Sandra Bullock must work undercover as a contestant in the Miss USA pageant. In two days, she is primped and pruned over (much against her will) and learns pageant ettiquette while making a new Rhode Island friend. This is not all the movie is about however -- there is a villain. A quite humorous movie, I enjoyed Miss Congeniality a lot and would definitely recommend it. This was the first day Miss Congeniality played. It wasn't sold out but the theater was very full. This was the 12:45 showing at Kahala. Spilled a boy's soda and had sticky feet though. I offered to buy him a new one but his mom said that a new straw would be enough so I ran with my wet feet and my slipper came off my foot about three times. :). After the movie was over I went to the restroom with Linh and found out my three younger sisters were in the same theater with me. Neither of us realized it till then.
Family Man - (PG-13) December 26, 2000 at Kahala *** Nicolas Cage is given a glimpse into the life that he could have had, had he chosen to stay with and marry his college sweetheart, Tea Leoni rather than putting his job first. Although extremely successful financially in his current life, he realizes that money is not that important. This movie is slightly sad (which makes it more realistic) but overall, pretty good. If you want to watch a movie and have already watched Miss Congeniality, I would probably recommend this one next. JM, EM, HM
The Castaway - December 27, 2000 at Dole *** Forrest Gump actor Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) stars as a very time conscious Fed-Ex supervisor. While on a plane delivering Fed-Ex parcels and letters, Chuck's plane crashes but luckily, there is an island nearby. Stranded on an island for over four years with only Wilson (Mr. Volleyball head) to talk to, and a picture of his girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt) to admire, Chuck is forced to learn new skills in order to survive. This is not a bad movie though I thought that some parts were a little slow. Whenever I see a FedEx truck now, I am reminded of The Castaway. VH
What Women Want - January 9, 2001 at Dole * 1/2 A weird accident bestows Mel Gibson with the gift of reading women's minds. He steals business ideas from Helen Hunt, a lady who says what she thinks and who he finds attractive. With the help of his mind reading abilities, Gibson creates a relationship with his daughter, makes things right with Helen at the end, among other things. Some of the ethics in this movie aren't very good so I probably wouldn't recommend it. VL, JN
