11.03.97 Barry Town 8(Eight!)-1 Aberystwyth Town
It was hard to remember that this was a league match and not some friendly
like VS Rugby's 5-1 defeat by Derby County. This counted and Aber's abject
display was embarassing. Not even Rangers have it this easy at Ibrox when
the might of Falkirk is providing the opposition. Sure, they have better,
more professional players than anyone else in the league but they are flesh
and blood and even Wigan Rugby League, at the height of their power, lost
from time to time. Aber seemed to have arrived with the attitude that
defeat was inevitable, which it may have been but that doesn't make that
kind of thinking right, and so were humiliated. 8-1 doesn't tell it all.
Mark Pound returned for the Green and Blacks and Donald Kane made another
start for the first team. Llyr Hughes was on the bench and played a little
in the second half. Barry were 4-1 by the break, the pick of them being a
long range free kick and a superb flicky volley thing for Chris Pike (who
was subbed at half time after completing his hat trick). The Vale of
Glamorgan boys got their eighth with a quarter of the game still to play and
had a few narrow misses. The crowd consisted mainly of cocky teenagers
who have an irritating arrogance about them, no doubt brought about by the
fact Barry even gave Aberdeen a fright. The Aber contingent was greatly
reduced, a sign of the flagging spirits among Seasider fans. Would Aber get
200 for that Youth Cup tie now? It appears that Appy is going to sack
Jamesy and Harri. Personally, I think that's the worst thing he could do.
Surely it is now time to consider his role in Aber's downfall. Players
who should be playing better are consistently underachieving and, as
tonight painfully showed, have no motivation to do better.
On the way back we listened to "Perfect Day" and "Shiny Happy People"
purely for post modern irony.
