Tying an Olive Thorax

Recipe

Hook: Standard Dry Fly, sizes 16~22 Thread: 8/0, Olive Tail: Hackle Fibers, Blue Dun Wing: Turkey Flat, Blue Dun Body: Dry Fly Dubbing, Olive Hackle: Blue Dun

Tying Instructions

  1. Place the hook in the vise and using a jam knot start the thread at the 50% mark. Wrap the thread to the bend of the hook.

  2. Apply a small amount of dubbing to the thread and dub a ball at the bend of the hook.

  3. Tie in and divide 6~10 hackle fibers to form a split tail. The tail should be approximately the length of the hook shank. Take the thread to the 60% mark.

  4. Prepare and tie in one turkey flat at the 60% mark, facing forward over the eye of the hook. The wings should be approximately the length of the hook shank. Wrap back over the butts to 50% and trim.

  5. Wrap immediately in front and at the base of the wings to force them upright. Take the thread to the tail position.

  6. Apply wax and dubbing to the thread and wrap forward to the 50% mark.

  7. Prepare one hackle and tie in at the 50% mark with the concave side facing up.

  8. Apply dubbing and wrap forward over the remainder of the body to the 90% mark.

  9. Wrap the hackle forward to the thread in widely spaced turns and tie off. Trim the excess hackle.

  10. Take minimal wraps, whip finish and cement.

  11. Trim the hackle on the underside of the fly.

Origins

The thorax-style dry fly was first introduced by Vince Marinaro in his classic work, A Modern Dry Fly Code. Mr. Marinaro observed the importance of wing position in accurately imitating the fully hatched mayfly dun.
