Adirondacks High Peaks Photos
2003, May 10-12
Looking South From Marcy Dam, I believe that one see's Mt. Colden in the distance
(in the middle of the photo). If you look closely, you can see snow on the open rock face
areas of the mountain. Click image for larger view.
View form Marcy Dam - looking a little to the right from the first view.
I believe that is now Avalanche Mountain in the center of the view. Click image for larger view.
Tony and Steve at Marcy Dam - barely into the trip. You can tell because we're
happy. And why not!? The sun is shining, it's a beautiful day, great sights so far....

Another view of Avalanche Mountain - framed on the right with the happy pine tree.
There were tremendous views all around from Marcy Dam, an excellent way to greet us
at the beginning of our adventure. Click image for larger view.

Looking West - from Marcy Dam. Click image for larger view.
Marcy Brook Tumbling Along - The crystal clear, cool waters were typical of the
streams in the Adirondacks. Looked almost good enough to drink, but alas, we're not that
daring. The trail from Marcy dam to Avalanche Pass came very close to the edge of the creek,
which allowed some of these close-up views. Click image for larger view.
Crossing Marcy Brook - This photo was taken as we crossed the brook just before
heading into Avalanche Pass. Click image for a larger view.
Stopping For A Drink - Tony stops for a refreshing drink as we cross the brook
and get ready to head into Avalanche Pass. Click image for larger view.
Avalanche Pass! - Wonder how this place got its name, right? This view of a
rock slide gives a clue. You're looking almost striaght up! Right along the trail, this presents sort of an
strange feeling when passing through the slide. Click image for larger view.
Cliffs at Avalance Lake - Another view of the cliffs one encounters on a journey
around Avalanche Lake. Click image for larger view.
Steve Crossing Avalanche Lake - Where did the trail go? Wooden bridges bolted
to the rocks provide a pathway around the lake in a few spots where the trail dissintegrates.
The trail guide refers to them as "Hitch-up Matildas." You will have to read the guide
yourself to find the story on how the name came about. Click image for larger view.
Avalanche Lake - One of my favorite shots from this trip. This view of Avalanche Lake is
a parting shot as the trail reaches the opposite end of the lake and continues on toward Lake
Colden. Click image for larger view.
Signpost Tells Where We've Been - The three of us as we are exactly 5.7 miles into our trip
on the first day. The fun was only about to begin. Click image for larger view.
Lake Colden - View as we reach Lake Colden, still on the first day. I wish I could remember
which peaks in the distance this shot was directed to (sorry!). Click image for larger view.
Crossing The Opalescent River - Tony and Steve on the suspension bridge that crosses
the river. They are dwarfed by the scale of everything around them. Click image for larger view.
Tony and Steve Crossing The Opalescent - A close-up view of the same shot as above.
Tony and Steve pose as I take this shot from behind them on the trail. Click image for larger view.
End of Day One - The three travelers at the end of a long day. We were pretty beat by
the end of the first day, as you can tell by the photo. I at least attempted to smile (I'm
on the left), not the case with Tony and Steve. Click image for larger view.
On Our Way To The Top Of Marcy - Tony posses along the ascent to the summit of
Mt. Marcy. Notice all the snow in the right of the picture? This spot was actually relatively
bare compared the the rest of the hike on the second day. Click image for larger view.
Almost At The Top! - Stevis does his best Beavis face as we near the summit of Marcy.
You can see that the weather was brewing up a storm just was we were getting toward the top.
Unfortunately, I didn't get any shots from the summit due to the nasty weather.
End Of Day Two! - Tony gives a thumbs up as we unpack for our stay at the
Slant Rock Leanto at the end of the second day. Click image for larger view.
Marcy Dam Panorama - Bonus shot! Panoramic view from Marcy Dam. This little
photo stitching actually turned out pretty good. Enjoy! Click image for larger view.
