Kids' Bike Safety Info
LIB has won an Illinois Safe Routes to School grant to distribute its kids bike safety sheets. Copies will be sent to schools for every fourth grader in the state, for two school years. The sheets provide age-appropriate lessons for children with a parent letter on back.
Compute Your Commute
The Kiplinger Newsletter offers a handy tool to compare the costs of riding your bike or driving your car to work every day. Fill in the information, and see how you fare. For persons living in the Chicago area who commute by Metra or CTA and may want to commute without a mass transit link, fill in the cost of your daily rides in the box provided for toll charges. Besides any savings, theres a tax benefit to biking to work for you and your company. after you do your calculations, you may want to consider using your bike if not five days a week, at least once or twice a week.
Bike To Metra
Could your town use a handy guide showing routes and tips for biking to your Metra station? Grant money is available for LIB to create brochures for 16 towns. Ten have already signed on: Western Springs, Bartlett, Grayslake, Maywood, Hanover Park, Naperville, Lockport, Palatine, Vernon Hills, and Crystal Lake. We'll need route advice (and photo shoot models) from cyclists in these towns. If your town has not signed on, ask your local officials the local match cost is roughly $1000.
