| Colorwheel Mousery's Basic Mouse Care |
| A little info about Fancy mice: They are fun to watch and handle and don't require a lot of special care to thrive. Fancy mice come in every color, and different coat types like rex (curly), longhair, and satin (shiny). Be sure to buy your mouse from a reputable breeder or petstore. A male mouse will tend to be much smellier than a female and will need to be kept away from other males, as they may fight to the death or injure one another. Females are more active than males, and must be kept in groups of two or more. The average fancy mouse will live 1-2 years if taken care of properly. Enjoy! Housing: I usually keep my mice in glass aquariums with mesh tops. Wire cages are also good, as long as the bars are spaced far enough apart that your mouse can't squeeze through. Also make sure there is enough room in the cage for a wheel, a waterbottle, a small food dish, a hidey house, other toys & space for the mice to run around. I wouldn't reccommend anything smaller than a 10 gallon tank. Up to 5 female mice can be kept in a cage this size. If breeding, keep babies in a glass aquarium. They can easily squeeze through wire. Bedding: I use Aspen bedding for my mice. Carefresh is also a safe type of bedding, although it smells when it gets wet. Never use Pine or Cedar, as they are toxic to animals and people. They are also very dusty and can cause respiratory infections, and liver and kidney failure. You should change the bedding in your mouse's cage once a week. Food: I mainly feed my mice lab blocks. They also get sweet feed, cooked & raw oatmeal, cooked rice, cooked noodles, and fresh fruits & veggies, and cereal (like Total, All Bran & plain Cheerios). Dry Milkbone dog biscuits are a good source of protein. Seeds can be fed as a treat only, as they are full of fat can cause obesity in mice. When you feed your mice, remove any uneaten food from the cage, especially fruits & veggies. Toys: I think every mouse should have a wheel in it's cage! It gives them plenty of exercise. Mice also love paper towel rolls & toilet paper rolls to hide in & chew on. Mice should have a little house to sleep in which can be anything from a small milk carton with a hole cut in it to a plastic house that you can buy in most petstores. Mice like to use shredded toilet paper to pad their homes. Other toys you can put in your mouse's cage are ladders, ledges, hollowed out logs and anything else you think your mouse would like to climb on. |
