01/06/03 - on December 15th, 2002 a stray was picked up roaming in Teller country. She was an older siberian, approximately 9-10 years of age, and was immediately taken to the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and given the name "Stray". I had been monitoring the dogs in the shelter closely, and noticed this girl wasn't having much luck getting adopted, which didn't surprise me as the older ones tend to have this problem - and usually, a depressing fate of their last days ending at the shelter. On December 31st I went in to see her, to meet with her to see what her temperment was like. The shelter staff informed me that she was to be the next "Pet of the Week" on Good Morning Colorado on Friday 1/3/03 and she was put back on the waiting list for the available adoption date of 1/4/03. It was here, while I sat by her kennel staring at her honest eyes, yet depressed eyes, that I promised her I wouldn't let her die in the shelter, and that I was sure there was a happy ending for her. And right at that moment walked in her happy ending, a woman with a huge heart named Tina. I think as their eyes met they both knew fate was calling, and it was in the stars that they be together. Tina went home to talk it over with her husband, and I anxiously awaited seeing this sweet girl on the news the coming Friday. To my dissapointment, the Pet of the Week special never aired, due to someone sick at the station.
On Saturday, her available day, I entered into the shelter, hoping to see this girl flooded with potential adopters due to the signs in her cage stating "Pet of the Week", and instead, I found no girl at all. Hoping Tina came in to adopt her I talked with the kennel staff about her where abouts. Turns out, she was taken out of the shelter and fostered by the Kennel Manager because she hadn't eaten in 48 hours. Truely she was depressed about being in the shelter and perhaps thought we had all given up on her. I called Tina after leaving the shelter to inform her she was still available - just in case she went to the shelter and noticed she wasn't there. As a matter of fact, she was there the day before looking for her!! I gave her the number of the Foster Mom, and the road was clear for our Stray and Tina's family to meet one on one.
On 1/6 the once deemed "Stray" went to her new forever home with Tina and her family, and was renamed "Zorra" for her beautiful mask. Zorra has a new 10-year old husky sister, and a 3 1/2 old husky mix brother as well. I got a call from Tina saying that everyone was getting along fine and they were all currenlty smelling eachother and getting used to eachother. Tina went into the shelter to look for a puppy, and came out with a 10-year old husky angel. It's because of inspiring people like Tina that I continue to do what I do to help these dogs. Her and her families big heart for this wonderful girl keep me going, and keep me hopeful that sometimes, truely, even if the situation seems doubtful, that there are happy endings. Congradulations Tina to your new family member, Zorra! |
