Colorado Springs and Pueblo
Colorado Springs
Their beers are not terribly
exciting, they were OK, but with the huge amount of good beer available in this
area, you will want to miss this one. FWIW, a big pretzel (hard) comes
with each beer (still). (last visited 4/99)
Colorado's
best. Exceptional food, beer, and single malt scotch selection. The IPA is alone
worth the trip and they have one of the few peated porters that you will ever
see (absolutely wonderful). All brews on their menu are exceptional and with no
discernable flaws. The food is exceptional and the prices are reasonable. They
have a pool room upstairs (ala Wynkoop in Denver), which has a wood fired pizza
oven. Even the wait staff seem to be knowledgeable on all counts. A definite
can't miss. (last visited 3/00)
Hops Bar and Grill
Awful. Beer tastes like water (see review on Hops -
Cherry Creek, same impression). This place also has a beer called Clearwater
Light, which is just like the one in Cherry Creek, clear, water AND light! Stay
away from this place, it is not worth your time!. (last visited 10/97)
A small place with a help yourself Italian/Pizza menu
that is very good. The beers are also very nice. The IPA is very much like the
Salida Il Vicino version (very good) and the other brews are also very nice.
Stop by if you are in the area, as this combined with Phantom Canyon and Palmer
Lake make a nice pub crawl. (last visited 7/99)
Palmer Lake Brewing at the Warehouse
In an old warehouse building on the
South side of downtown, 3 or 4 blocks from Phantom Canyon. In the front of the
building, they had a band playing, and in the rear of the building is the
restaurant/bar/brewery. The beer was nice except the Trolley Car Ale, a supposed
brown. They had a decent Hefeweizen and a very tasty stout. The best
beer probably was the Amber lager, which was a nice malty with a little bit of
hop bite towards the end. Very drinkable. (last visited 7/99)
Pueblo
Irish Brewpub
A place that is all too typical to Pueblo, only a couple
of windows in the front, and very dark. The beers here were OK. Well made and
only slightly adventurous. My favorite anecdote from my visit was when I asked
the barkeep why they didn't make a stout (they do make a "Taddy Porter" though),
being an Irish pub and all, and he said that that was because a Stout was one of
the most difficult styles to brew, so they hadn't done one yet. I didn't have
the heart to tell him that most homebrewers make stouts to start out because
they are the hardest ones to MESS UP!! I guess he wanted to sound important or
something. If you are in the beer desert called Pueblo and South Central
Colorado please DO stop in here as this is the closest you will get to
GoodBeer(tm) unless you go up to Colorado Springs. Otherwise, you can skip it. I
am told there is a new brewer in town here, which could only mean good things
IMO (mid 2002), but I have not been down there recently. (last visited
