Game 38 vs. Jersey Penguins
Game 38: 1/15/05 vs. Jersey Penguins (W 8-3)
The Colonials continued their strong league play Saturday night as they saw the Jersey Penguins for the third time this year, this time at Mennen Arena. With the season winding down the team is trying to keep a high level and intensity up at every game. They have not lost a league game since before Thanksgiving and they continued to look good tonight. Matt Daugherty opened up the scoring to give his team the early lead but some wacky things started to happen. Geoff Durham who got the emergency start because Eric Visnovsky has been sidelined with a sprained finger, looked just a little off to start the game. A Penguins player floated one in from the blue line and it slid along the ice through Durham's legs. The very next shot went in as well as the Penguins quickly reversed the score. Durham quickly shook it off though and kept his team in it with some stellar saves. The Colonials responded with two straight goals from Brian Dixon, with assists from Mike Lundberg, Ryan Cassidy and Jay Sogliuzzo. Matt Fullam ended the scoring in the first period as he fired a shot that went off of Penguins goaltender Tyler Kelly's head and into the net. The score was 4-2 after the first and the Colonials just kept pouring it on. The Penguins were called for a penalty and in the first 10 seconds of the power play the Colonials hit paydirt with a pretty play. Dixon won the faceoff to Drew Perry at the top of the zone. Perry saucered a pass over to Corey DeFranco at the side of the net. DeFranco then slid a pass across the crease and Dixon buried it for the hat trick. Tic-Tac-Toe and it was 5-2. Daugherty would finish with two more for a hat trick of his own and Mike Formichella would blast one in from the point on the power play, assisted by Jordan Tucci. Durham finished strong with 21 saves and the final score was 8-3 as the Colonials improve to 11-2-3 in league play this year.
