Game 37 vs. NJ Kings AAA
Game 37: 1/09/05 vs. NJ Kings AAA (W 7-5)
The Colonials had a non-league test on Sunday against a very tough AAA team playing out of Princeton Sports Center (formerly Pro Skate), the NJ Kings. The Colonials have fared well in AAA play this year, and has given them that extra push throughout the season to increase their level of play at the AA level. They had yet to come away with a win though and were hoping to change that this morning. They came out much stronger than the day before and were clearly outplaying the Kings but their chances were just not going in and once again found themselves down 2-0 after the first period. This was becoming a bad habit but they felt comfortable they could rebound and that's exactly what they did in the second period. Team captain Mike Formichella, who had spent most of the first period in the penalty box after a questionable hit from behind had the freshest legs and he used them. Matt Fullam and Brian Dixon set him up at the point and he blasted a rocket that went over the goalie's glove and in. The officiating began to sway against them but it didn't matter as Matt Daugherty put pressure on the defense even shorthanded and stole a puck, brought it to the front and once again put it over the goalie's glove to tie the game. The comeback would be completed by Mikey Lundberg as Fullam and Dixon got the assists again finding Lundberg on the doorstep and he chipped it in. The score was 3-2 but penalties would quickly erase that lead however as the third period began with more questionable calls and the Kings scored twice to make it 4-3. The Colonials would not go quietly this time however and once again Formichella brought a puck over the blue line and unloaded a shot that rose over (you guessed it) the goalie's glove. The coaching staff kept emphasizing to shoot in that spot as it had worked so far. From there on out it was a shooting gallery. Daugherty put in another as did Corey DeFranco, on two beautiful shots. The Kings would fire back with a goal of their own to cut the Colonial lead to 6-5. They pulled the goalie for the extra attacker but Steve Genualdi picked it up, crossed the red line and put it into the free goal to seal the game at 7-5. The Colonials win a wild one and they looked good doing it. They improve their overall record to 19-10-8 and return to league play next Saturday against the Penguins.
