Game 33 vs. Ice House Avalanche
Game 33: 12/18/04 vs. Ice House Avalanche (W 5-4)

In a long anticipated rematch the Avalanche came to Mennen Arena Saturday night for the second league game this year against them. These two teams are getting to know each other very well this year and it is turning into some rivalry. Those of you that made it out to the game saw a real treat. These two teams have played defensive style games both times they met each other so far, one league and one non-league, both of them ending in a tie. Ninety minutes of hockey and nothing had been decided. Something had to give. Special teams would be a huge difference in this game and it started in the first period as the Colonials were awarded with a power play. Brian Dixon took a shot from the slot that Joe Fayle kicked back out but right to Jay Sogliuzzo who put one over his glove for the first goal of the game. The lead would be short-lived however as the Avalanche would get a power play of their own and cash in as a player snuck behind the defense down low and put one in past Geoff Durham. It was 1-1 towards the end of the second period when Dixon would begin tearing up the ice. He stole a puck in the neutral zone shorthanded and was off on a breakaway. Fayle tried to pokecheck and Dixon fired it right through his legs to put his team ahead by a goal. The Avalanche started the 3rd period on that same power play and just 30 seconds in executed a perfect tic-tac-toe passing play that left Durham out to dry to tie the game. This is where things really started to open up. The third period would see some back and forth scoring. Sogliuzzo would put in another but it would be answered almost immediately by the Hackensack-based team. Dixon would put in another, and again the Avalanche would respond with one of their own. Every time a lead was taken it was erased momentarily. The Colonials knew how important the game was though and would not be denied. Buzz Sobieski worked a puck down low, made a move around the defense, walked out to the front of the net and saucered a pass over to Dixon who scored the go-ahead goal and complete his hat trick. The Colonials would play tough D for the next 4 minutes and with one final save from Durham to end the game the crowd erupted. They had just knocked off the first place team to shake up the standings a bit. The race for districts just got a bit more interesting.
