Daniel didn't know how long he'd been out for...all he knew was when he woke up...he was lying inside a sleeping bag...in a tent....naked....with a brown haired woman lying on his chest...she stirred and he found himself looking into the most stunning pair of brown eyes he'd seen since he'd met Shar'ai. She blinked and smiled into his eyes. "Good morning handsome..., how do you feel?" she asked.

Colour rose in his cheeks...as this complete stranger moved her hand in the close quarters of what he now realised was a sleeping bag, brushing against his skin as it left its place around his waist and travelled towards his face.... "You feel cooler...," she said...Her body felt warm against his. His arms were wrapped around her waist...and from what he could tell she wore nothing, not even her undergarments.

"umm...better I think...what happened?" he asked her. His voice sounding hoarse to his own ears.

"Don't you remember?" She asked him.

"N-no I don't" he responded frowning. He winced, it hurt to frown...reaching up he touched his head...and found a small field dressing in place.

Noticing the concern on his face she gently took his hand...and lowered it back into the bag....

"It's a deep enough gash...I cleaned it out and dressed it once I got you out of the river and back here." She told him. "So there shouldn't be any infection."

Daniel swallowed as she leaned across him. He felt her warm breasts squash against his side.

She opened the zipper and gently eased over him...rising her body so that she wouldn't touch him...which he found intriguing as she'd been almost on top of him... "Your ribs are bruised and you have several other tender areas...I tried to avoid them and I'm sorry if I hit off any." She told him...kneeling now beside him...reaching across and grabbing a pair of slacks from a neat pile of clothes.

Daniel pulled the sleeping bag over his nakedness...having seen the bandage around his ribs. Looking up he froze...she was standing...pulling on the slacks...her body was beautiful...taut...trim and supple looking...

"And you were in here with me because.....?" he asked.

She smiled...hopped on one leg while pulling up her slacks...

"You were suffering from Hypothermia...would u rather I let u die?"

"I was!"

She sat down...

"I found you floating in the river...I pulled u out and had to give you CPR...it took four goes before you decided that You were going to live." As she talked she reached across and grabbed a bra from the pile and put it on...

Daniel watched her...she seemed uninhibited around him...he found himself wondering if anything had happened within the confines of the sleeping bag and hoping that it hadn't...because...he'd like to be able to remember it if it did...then chided himself for such thoughts...

"I dragged u back up here and stripped you...gave u some broth...and then u started babbling...boy you do have some weird nightmares...Gateways to other dimensions....parasicdic creatures....what a mind..."

She was pulling on a T-shirt now and smiling at him...

Daniel swallowed...he'd obviously spilled the beans...but she didn't believe him. "What are you some sort of writer or something?"

Her deep brown eyes peered into his. He found himself speechless...what could he say.

She pulled on a pair of heavy socks and began tying her boot laces. Grabbed a large chunky jumper and pulled it on. Rising her hands up...looping them under her long brown hair and easing it free of her jumper neck in one sweet, sexy movement. "I guess I'd better introduce my self...I'm Vanessa Edwards." Her smile sent a curious warmth through his body.

"Daniel Jackson!" he said.

She reached across and offered him her hand. He took it and returned her smile. "I know...you told me last night!" she said. Then releasing his hand standing up and walking towards the tent flap.

"I'll make some soup...and then help u dress...we got to get off this damn mountain before the storm sets in.." she told him...then unzipped the flap and went outside.

Daniel lay within the sleeping bag...which now seemed almost too big for him without her in it. He tried to remember what had happened. He knew he was on his own...heading up river in order to meet with Col. Jack O'Neill, Capt. Sam Carter and Teal'c...they were going fishing...he'd gotten held up by General Hammond. Something about the last mission. Daniel had told the others to go on...that he'd follow. Daniel remembered the boat... and the river. He remembered the storm and the rush of water...but then nothing,...nothing at all...not even telling that woman Edwards his name.

Giving up on trying to remember, Daniel looked around the small tent. His clothes lay in a neat pile beside him...determined not to have her dress him, he reached across to grab his jeans...and cried out painfully...cradling his bruised ribs in his arms.

Vanessa was inside the tent in a moment, by his side and pushing him down onto the floor.

"I told you not to move Daniel." She said reprimanding him gently.

Daniel closed his eyes against the pain...his breathing was shallow and he felt dizzy.

Vanessa touched his head and sighed.

"You are still weak Daniel, Please lie still...I won't be long I promise." She said and rose smoothly.

"ummm!" he mummered.

Vanessa left the tent...it was already getting colder and he was still weak...she needed to get him out of here. She walked to the fire and crouched down...lifting a small pot and a mug she filled it to the top then filled a second one...and then settled the pot down onto a stone near the fire..

She had come up here to get away from everyone. This was her time alone. Her time to think...since the results of the test she'd not wanted to be around anyone. How could this have happened to her. She'd always been so careful...eaten the right foods. She didn't smoke...didn't eat red meat...hell...her whole life had been spent protecting herself...her mom had died of the disease when Vanessa was in her teens...and since then she'd tried to beat the odds. Now it looked like the fates were going to have the last laugh. Not only had the odds played true, but they'd put her up here and sent her the most beautiful man she'd ever seen. Damn...

Vanessas hand began to shake, and she breathed a silent request to no one in particular to keep her strong. At least until she got him down the mountain and to safety. It took some effort to stop the nerves and she when she began to breathe normally again she rose and carried the mugs into the tent and her waiting patient.

Daniel took the mug thankfully and drank from it. Chicken...it was Chicken...he was really beginning to dislike Chicken. Vanessa sat down by him and drank from her own.

"Did I thank you?" he asked watching her.

She smiled around the mug and lowered it...swallowing the warm soup...

"Uh...yes...!" she said. Then licked the soup from her lips...

Daniel blocked out the thought that permeated his mind as she did so...

When they were finished, Vanessa set both mugs aside and smiled at Daniel... "Time to get dressed..." her grin was a mile wide and Daniel found himself blushing again...she moved to lift the sleeping bag cover and he stopped her...

Vanessa looked into his blue eyes and seen a strange kind of panic in his eyes....She smiled...and placed her other hand on top of his...

"We spent the night in a sleeping bag...naked...I undressed you and put you in there...I promise I won't touch you...unless you want me too..." she said with a wicked smile.

Daniel licked his lips and swallowed.... "I know, but if you don't mind...!" he said. "Fine...!" she told him...lifting his clothes and handing them to him...then she turned her back to him and waited.

Daniel struggled into his clothes...his ribs hurt like hell...but there was no way that he was going to let her dress him...not if he could manage himself. Daniel stood up with some difficulty...a sharp intake of breath that caused Vanessa to turn...but stay away as he was determined to do this himself.

She stood as he did...and caught him before he kyped over...

"Easy there handsome!" she said...helping him find his balance and letting him lean on her...

"Your stronger than you look." He told her.

She smiled up at him "and you aren't as strong as you think!" she said helping him outside...he squinted at the brightness of the day.

"You said there was a storm coming!" he said.

"uh-huh...we need to either get down the mountain and into Craysbridge...or find somewhere a little better protected than my little tent." She said helping him across to a fallen log...and settling him down.

As she walked back to the tent Vanessa went over all the worst case scenarios....the worst of which was staying here at the tent and being killed in the storm...they stood a better chance in the village...it was only six miles away...they could make it...

She took one of the two rucksacks that had been fastened to her campers frame...into it she placed the now rolled up thermal sleeping bag, the first aid kit, and some food. She hoped they'd reach the village but in case they didn't she took enough supplies to do them for a couple of days...rationed of course.

Then having wrote a note...sealed it in plastic and pinning them to the tent...she struggled into her coat...put on the rucksack and walked across to Jackson. Helping him stand up Vanessa walked with him across the glade, towards the trees and their way down the mountain.

Daniel walked with one arm across his ribs...holding him self tightly...they weren't going too fast, due to him having to stop every so often and rest...her insistence not his. The sky over head was turning dark and ominous clouds rolled into place...the air began to feel damp and he began to feel worried about being caught out in it...

Vanessa paused...looking around her...another four miles but she didn't think they'd make it there before the storm erupted...there to her left...an outcrop of rocks...maybe...

"We won't make it before the storm erupts...we gotta get some shelter." She said to him...

Daniel was leaning against the tree...he hurt and wanted nothing more than lie down somewhere and not move...

"Are you alright?" she asked coming up beside him.

Daniel Jackson could feel her closeness...she laid a hand on his head and frowned at him...

"We'd best get you under cover...come-on...lean on me." She told him.

"I can manage." He said.

"Cut the macho crap, I'm helping you and that's all there is to it." She said and took his arm firmly in her hand and ducked under his arm. "Come on handsome!" she said and helped him towards what she hoped would turn out to be a cave.

As she expected behind the out crop of rocks hidden from view was the mouth of a cave. She helped him inside and eased him down onto the ground...he winced and she shrugged off the back pack. Knelt down and leaned across...she felt his head under the field dressing...and frowned...she hoped the warm dampness was due to exersion...,br> "I'm alright...just tired." He said smiling up into her beautiful brown eyes... She lowered her hand and nodded. Rising she told him that she would go in search of firewood...and told him not to move...which brought the response "As if" from him.

She arrived back to find that he'd not 'stayed put' but instead had began to unpack the sleeping bag and set up a stone circle for the fire.

"You've done this before...!" she said smiling.

Daniel smiled at her....he used to do this for himself and shar'ai...before she was taken for the Gaou'ld.

There was only one sleeping bag between the two of them...sure they'd shared it earlier but he had been ill. It was clear in his mind that she should have it...

Outside the storm was blowing itself into a right state...

Vanessa piled some more dry sticks onto the fire and sat back on her heels...trying to be pleasant around him was causing her great strain...she wanted to scream and kick and cry at how unfair this all was....the errie glow of the fire filled the cave with flickering shadows...

There was treatment of course...her doctor had told her...weeks and months of radioactive bombardment and the pills yes...a pharmacy full of pills...there would be pain...lots of pain...and her hair would fall out...

Daniel watched her as she sat there. Her mind obviously miles away. The firelight flickering in her face. She'd such a beautiful face...High cheek bones...long lashes...and the most beautiful small nose...

Vanessa licked her lips, her mouth suddenly dry as her mind recited her options...she lifted her hand and ran it through her soft brown hair.

'Maybe it would be better to lay down and die right now...she could go out side...down to the river and ....' She mused, closing her eyes.

Daniel got up from where he'd been sitting with his back to the smooth rock face. He walked towards her, still nursing his ribs.

"Vanessa?" he queried as she began to slowly rock on her knees...

She didn't seem to hear him...

"Vanessa are you all right?" he asked lowering to his knees and touching her shoulder.

Vanessa turned to him...her eyes opening...they had a faraway look about them...very slowly the look faded as she once again seemed to be with him. A soft...sweet...sad...flickered briefly across her face, then vanished.

"Umm, sorry a million miles away!" she told him suddenly very aware of his close proximity. Boy he was handsome...blonde...blue eyed...muscular...and he actually seemed to care. She longed to feel those oh so kissable lips on hers...and feel his naked body against hers. But she refrained why put herself through it...she'd never see him again...quite possibly literally. No! she couldn't...she wouldn't....well...maybe...

Her eyes looked so sad, Daniel found his hand touching her face, before he even realised he'd lifted it. She seemed to accept the movement...and slowly took hold of his hand in hers...she lifted it down and closing her eyes...kissed the palm of his hand....her lips soft against his skin.

Daniel stared at her. She surprised him by letting go of his hand and grabbing him by the shirt. Vanessa pulled him close...her kiss was demanding...her lips hard against his...he felt the need within her...and as her body leaned in to him...knew exactly what she wanted...the surprising thing was...he didn't mind...

Vanessa held him so tightly her knuckles whitened...She kissed him hard...every thing she felt she put into that kiss...all the despair she felt...all the desire...all the pain. Suddenly she let him go. Her eyes beginning to tear up...she couldn't do this...not this way.

Vanessa rose to her feet. She walked away from him...leaving him sitting there...puzzled...

"Y-you should get...some rest...!" she said hunkering down by the sleeping bag...and flattening out some non-existent wrinkles... "You should take the sleeping bag...I'll lie by the fire.." she informed him.

Daniel watched her with a totally confused look on his face. Something was going on here...one minute she was coming on to him heavily...and the next she was treating him like she couldn't bare to look at him. Determined to get to the bottom of it...He stood up...wincing again with the pain...and walked over to him.

"Vanessa!" he said.

"You should sit down Daniel...rest..." she said ignoring him, rising to her feet and walking around him without even looking at him.

Daniel caught her arm...halting her progress...she looked straight ahead..

"What's going on?" he asked her a little annoyed.

Her eyes turned to him...the sadness almost wrenched the heart out of him...he knew that look...he'd seen it in the mirror every day since Shar'ai had left Abydos with Aphophis...despair...total and utter despair.

"Nothing Daniel...absolutely nothing is going on...!" she said.

Daniel Jackson stepped closer to her...he eased her around to face him...Vanessas eyes seemed to stare right through him...almost as if he didn't exist. Daniel lifted his free hand and touched her cheek with the back of his hand...her eyes closed and she breathed in deeply...he let go of her arm...and raised his hand gently taking hold of her head. Vanessas eyes opened slowly...such sadness...he bent forward.

His lips were like velvet against hers...gentle...as if he were afraid to hurt her...Vanessa stood very still...the pressure he excueded increased slowly as did the butterfly feeling that started in her stomach and worked its way through her body. Before she knew what was happening...her arms were around him and she was kissing him back...her body leaning in against him.

They parted and he smiled into her eyes...he very slowly opened her jacket...and pushed it off her. Vanessa swallowed and closed her eyes as he leaned forward and kissed her again...his hands sliding down her body...from her shoulders to the base of the heavy jumper she wore.

He backed up, lifting the jumper.

She raised her arms.

He pulled the jumper over her head...and flung it aside...

Daniel smiled...he liked unwrapping things even as a child...

He moved in close to her...she stood in T-shirt and slacks...waiting...

Daniel lent in...fully intending to remove this the same way as he had the jumper...only she caught his hands...

"My turn..." she said.

He grinned and she placed her hands on the shirt beneath the open coat...her hands traced a path all the way up to his neck...then fanned out under the coat...slipping it down his shoulders and off his arms as she lent in and nibbled on his lip...

Vanessa...reached up and slowly...removed his glasses...she smiled...the first time since he'd kissed her...and folded his glasses...placing them in his shirt pocket... she leaned in again...her mouth on his throat... her fingers unfastened the top shirt button....and she kissed the bare skin beneath...each button the whole way down she did the same thing...taking care around his ribs....

Daniel breathed in as she reached the button next to his jeans. Slowly she pulled the errant shirt from the waist band and opened the last two...her fingers tracing lines across his crotch...exciting him...at last she began to flutter soft butterfly kisses up along his torso...her tongue spending a little time tracing lazy circles around his nipples. Before she smoothed the shirt from his shoulders and let his hungry mouth claim hers again.

He held her tightly against him...his hands travelled up under her T-shirt as he found entry into her mouth and began an interesting exploration of it. She trembled as his fingers traced tantalising circles around her nipples through the thin material...he then put his hands behind her and began to pull the shirt up over her head... Not wanting to release her mouth but finding he had to, laughed as she struggled out of it...she smiled again...and reached up behind her. Daniel's hands stopped her. "No, I get to undress you..." there was a wicked glint in his eyes. Vanessa nodded and placed her hands on his chest...just above the bandage.

Deftly he flicked open the clips...his hands moved up and took a strap in each hand...slowly he began to lower them...licking his lips as he did so...she let her hands drop and the flimsy garment fell to the ground. He reached out and touched her with his hands. Caressing them his eyes full of appreciation...he bent forward to her and cupping one breast in his hand teased its already ripe nub with his tongue...

Vanessa sighed...she held him as close to her as she could...relishing the touch of his fingers...hands and tongue on her tender skin...she trembled and one hand moved around to her back as he lowered onto the ground. The other opened the top button of her slacks and then joined its mate at the small of her back...as he pulled the zipper down with his teeth. His hands then caught the sides of the slacks and began to pull them over her hips...down her thighs and past her knees...his lips caressing her soft belly and moving excitingly lower. She stepped out of the slacks and kicked them aside. His hands pulled her to him again...resting on the small of her back...as his mouth explored her inner regions...her hands roamed through his hair as she sighed...and moaned...her body pressing into him as he loved her with his tongue.

Her body stiffened with the release...he rose...kissing her beautiful, soft skin...she smelt good...and tasted even better...

Vanessa looped her fingers through the belt loops of his jeans...she kissed him hungrily...he'd given her quite an appetite...and he was the main course. Her hands moved up his back and along his shoulders...then back down his arms...she opened his jeans in two very swift movements...and lowered to the ground...his eyes closed and he chewed his bottom lip as she lowered his jeans...and took possession of him.

His breathing became ragged as her mouth, tongue and hands did some very unusual and most pleasant things to him...he felt like he was about to explode, so gently...and firmly he pulled her up to him...and ravished her mouth...

"Sleeping Bag..." she gasped....when he let her go so that they could both breathe again....

They stumbled across to the sleeping bag and he climbed into it...holding up the flap...she moved in beside him...her hands on his chest...they moved lower...and he gasped...she smiled and took his mouth prisoner again...

Vanessa straddled him...it would be the only way that wouldn't cause him pain. The last thing she wanted to do was hurt him. She kissed him as she felt him enter her...his gasp of pleasure made her smile...she raised her body...and touched his face then she began to move...slowly at first...his hands on her breasts...then quicker...she gasped...and he moaned...his hands now supporting her. She threw back her head and licked her lips...coming back up to look into his blue passionate eyes...

Their emotion peaked and exploded...Vanessa fell forwards onto his chest as her body spasamed with the power of her climax...Daniel held her close to him as his own body was rocked by the force of his own coming.

She lay against his damp skin...listening to his heart, and his breathing. Neither said a word...she looked up and he softly kissed her lips...then she lowered her head again...slipping off him and lying by his side. Until they both fell asleep.

Daniel woke to the smell of chicken soup cooking, the sleeping bag felt empty with only one body in it. Vanessa knelt by fire humming a tune...something light and pleasant. He was glad that she was happier.

"Good Morning!" he greeted her.

Vanessa turned and flashed him a brilliant smile. "Good morning handsome..." she said and turned back to the fire, she lifted out the small metal pot and filled two mugs with the piping hot liquid.

Then carried them across to Daniel...she knelt down and leaned across careful not to spill any of the liquid and kissed him softly. Then handed him a mug.

"Drink up...storms over and we got a lot of ground to cover..." she told him.

"Couldn't we just stay a little while longer?" he asked.

She grinned widely...and shook her head...

"Although I would like nothing better I guess there's people out there looking for you...I gotta get you to town."

Daniel knew she was right...yet he didn't want to leave it at a night of unabandoned sex...he wanted her to know that he wouldn't mind seeing her again...he wanted to know her...wanted to know what made her tick...and why she'd been so sad.

She evaded his questions and made him get dressed when he'd asked about her sadness...he didn't push it...lord knew he had his own secrets.

Two hours later when they were almost at the village Vanessa and Daniel bumped into the rescue party heading into the mountains for the second day...Jack, Teal'c and Sam where amongst them...and all where dressed in army fatigues....

Some where in amongst the greetings and explanations of what had happened, Vanessa managed to sneak away unseen...Daniel didn't miss her until he managed to get away from the others and went searching for her. A lt., Archer handed him a note...all it said was... "Thanks!" V.

Two weeks later Jack O'Neill pulled up outside a large house on its own grounds...He looked across at Daniel...

"You sure this is her house?" he asked his friend.

"That's the address I got out of the phone book...the only one left..." he replied.

"Wish me luck!" he said. Opened the car door and walked towards the house.

His ringing of the doorbell brought a red haired maid to answer it. He asked for Vanessa and was asked to step inside. The house was silent and he heard the sound of whispering from the sitting room...an elegant woman with swept up white hair greeted him...

The woman was Vanessas aunt...the news she gave him was not what he'd been expecting. Daniel left the house in a daze...several things becoming very clear to him.

"She wasn't there?" Jack asked.

"No...she's at memorial!" he responded.

Vanessa lay in her private room staring out the window...she felt sick to her stomach...the kemo was playing havoc with her insides and they'd made her drink some awful grey liquid that stuck to her stomach like a stone. To take her mind of it she cast her mind back to the mountain...the cave and the one night she'd known of total and complete enjoyment since this had all happened. As she closed her eyes...calling his magnificence to mind she could almost swear she could hear his voice...smell that wonderful masculine scent of him...

Daniel touched her arm...He'd been terrified to enter the room. She'd obviously not wanted him to know about the cancer...she'd not wanted him to feel sorry for her...so she'd not told him...she'd just left. But he was here now and there was no way he was leaving...

Vanessa turned and sucked in a breath...he was the last person she'd expected to see.

"Why didn't you tell me?" he asked softly.

"I-I...," her voice trailed and her eyes filled with tears.

Daniel bent down and kissed her forehead beneath the scarf she wore...

"I want to know everything Vanessa...and if you think you can sneak away this time you can't...so out with it..." he smiled pulling up a chair and sitting down...taking hold of her pale hand in his.
