Samantha Carter lay on her back on her sleeping bag and looked up into the night sky of BPJ4D786.  The twin full moons did nothing to dim the brilliance of the stars in the heavens.  There was one advantage to being on a planet where the technology wasn't very advanced, she thought - no light pollution to destroy your view of the sky at night.

The night was warm, and the scent of the flowers from the jungle-like landscape surrounding their campsite teased her senses.  Around her, the rest of SG-1 lay sleeping - Daniel, curled up on his side, Teal'C, sleeping like a soldier with his arms crossed on his chest, and Jack - Jack with arms and legs akimbo, like a kid after a tough day at play.  She smiled at the thought of her tough Colonel being like a kid, but he was!

She turned her attention heavenwards again, and then closed her eyes.  After a few minutes, she gave up.  It wasn't going to work.  She wasn't sleepy, it was no use even trying to sleep.  This night was just too seductive, filling her senses with its magic.

Suddenly, she had a thought - there was a pool a little way off.  Far enough away from the camp that she wouldn't have to worry about waking the rest of the team, but not so isolated that she would not be able to get back quickly in an emergency.

She knew she shouldn't, but the idea had gotten into her mind, and would not be moved.  What the hell, she decided.  She got up carefully, and stole quietly out of the camp, heading towards the pool.  She moved quietly through the dense vegetation, noting with delight how the scent rose from the plants as she brushed against them.  By the time she reached the clearing surrounding the pool, she was almost intoxicated with the fragrance now clinging to her uniform.

The pool's surface was like a mirror, reflecting the twin moons.  The water was still and dark, and very inviting.  It took her only moments to decide that a midnight swim was just what the Doctor Captain ordered.  She grinned to herself, and sat down to unlace her boots, unaware that she was being observed by a pair of blue eyes.

Jhoti watched breathlessly from the other side of the pool.  He had left his home in the nearby village a few minutes earlier.  This pool was his favourite place, and he often came out here for a swim late at night.  He had been surprised to see the feringhi-rani in the clearing - the feringhi were camped some distance outside the village, and he had supposed they would remain in their camp.

The feringhi had been in the village earlier in the day.  The older man, and the younger one with the glass circles, had spoken to them, and had explained that they were travellers who had come through the Chaapa-ai, the great Star Circle, who only wished to be their friends.  Jhoti had not been privy to their meeting with the elders, but it seemed that relations between the groups were friendly.

The feringhi were fascinating to Jhoti's people, but most especially the feringhi-rani, with her beautiful blonde hair and fair skin.  Jhoti thought she was probably the most beautiful thing he had ever seen.  Finding her here was so unexpected that he couldn't move from the spot where he stood.

He was not normally the type of man who would spy on a woman, but he could not tear his eyes away.

As she took off her boots and placed them neatly together beside her, Sam suddenly grinned.  If she was going to do this, why not go all the way?  If she was going to take a midnight swim in a seductive location like this, why not go naked?

She had intended to keep her underwear on, but looking at the inviting water, she realised that was not going to work.  Nope, a pool like this, in a place like this, on a night like this, called for only one thing - skinny dipping.  The only regret she had, as she stood and began to undress, was that there was no-one to share it with.

Jhoti watched breathlessly.  She had removed her boots, and was now standing up.  Her hands moved to the fastening of her trousers.  Then she pulled her top up over her head, and folded it before laying it on top of the boots she had placed beside her.

She pushed down the trousers, and folded them neatly too, before standing back up.

Gods, she was beautiful!  Her pale skin was like marble in the moonlight - she looked like a statue of some glorious goddess.  Her full breasts, with their darker nipples, the curve of her hips, her long legs - he could not take his eyes from her.

She seemed so unreal, so eerily perfect, that he was almost surprised when she moved.  He held his breath unconsciously as she waded into the water.

The ripples of her passing broke the mirror like surface of the water, and sent the reflection of the full moons skipping across the surface, like pearls scattered carelessly on dark satin.

Jhoti knew this pool well - the water was warm near the banks, but towards the centre it was colder.  Sam now found this out.  Her gasp of surprise seared into his mind, as did the sight of her nipples suddenly tightening in response to the cold.

After the initial shock, Sam found the water invigorating.  She slid beneath the water and swam lazily to the centre of the pool.  She could stand up, but the water was around her neck.  This was perfect, she exulted to herself, as she floated on her back and stared up into the starry firmament.

She looked like some exotic lotus flower, floating in the centre of the pool, Jhoti thought.

They were both startled by the noise.  A crashing sound, ominously close in the woods.

Sam's military instincts kicked in.  She stood up in the pool, calling in a steady voice, "Who's there?", and praying it wasn't Jack or one of the others.  How she was going to explain this was the least of her worries - she was more concerned with the fact that she would have to leave this pool in her birthday suit.

Jhoti watched the tension in her face and was ashamed of what he had done in watching her.  He called out, wishing to allay her fears, "It was probably a boabi, a wild cat, chasing its supper.  It is long gone now."

"Who are you?" she shot back.

"My name is Jhoti - I am from the village.  I was coming out for a swim.  Please, I did not mean to disturb you," he called.  He would return to his home, he decided, and think long and hard about his shameful behaviour.  He also thought he might think once or twice about how beautiful she had looked in the moonlight.

"Come out here where I can see you," she challenged.

Now what would he do?  He had told her his name - if he refused to come out, she might well go to the elders and complain.  He sighed - it appeared he had no choice.  He stepped out of the bushes, and stood at the edge of the pool.

Sam stared as the young man appeared by the pool.  He was tall and well built, and his brown hair was pulled back into a ponytail.  He wore a sarong type garment knotted around his hips, and the muscles of his chest and abdomen were well defined. He held his hands out, showing her that he meant her no harm.

Sam felt a quiver deep inside her - he really was an attractive young man.  Suddenly the idea of continuing her swim alone didn't appeal.  She swam a little closer to the bank, and stood up.

Jhoti's breath caught in his throat at the sight of her.  She stood in the waist deep water, watching him with a steady gaze.  Her full breasts were beaded with water, and her blonde hair was wet and slicked back against her head.

"You were planning on a swim?" she asked him.  He didn't trust his voice, and simply nodded.  And then was surprised when she smiled at him - a slow, lazy smile - and said, "Well, don't let me stop you!"

Was that an invitation he could hear in her voice?  An invitation for perhaps more than a swim?  His question showed on his open face, and Sam smiled more broadly at him.  She laughed, a teasing sound, and said, "Why don't you join me, Jhoti?"  She was rewarded by his answering smile.  This was going to be an interesting evening after all, she thought.

She watched, hungrily, as his hands went to the sarong and loosened the knot of fabric at his hip.  He dropped the fabric to the ground at feet, and Sam's smile broadened further.  Oh yes, this was going to be a very interesting evening!  She waited for him, as he waded into the water.

When he stood before her, she said quietly, "Hello Jhoti.  My name is Sam."  She stepped closer, pressing herself against him.  His arms went around her, and he bent his head to kiss her.

Her lips were soft, and they parted under the pressure of his.  Her tongue traced his lips, and then explored his mouth.  When the kiss ended, they were both breathless.  She pulled his head down close to hers.  "Swim with me Jhoti," she breathed close to his ear, and then moved away from him and sank down into the water.

They swam lazily for the next few minutes, teasing one another with glances and brushing caresses, until their desire forced them to the shallower water.  Jhoti pulled Sam closer to him.  She straddled his body, lowering herself onto his lap.  His arms tightened around as her as he kissed her hungrily.  Her hands tangled themselves in his hair.

His lips left hers, and travelled down her throat, tasting her cool skin.  She threw her head back, allowing him access to her breasts, pushing his head downwards to them.  He nuzzled at their softness before gently placing his lips around her nipple.  She moaned softly, and her hands worked restlessly in his hair.  He trailed his lips back up her body to reclaim her lips.

Her arms tightened around him, pulling their bodies closer together.  The feel of her against him was incredible.  He moved her gently in his lap, and she encouraged him, murmuring, "Yes, oh yes please."

Their bodies joined, and they began to move as one.  The water lapped around them, and the sounds and scents of the woods surrounded them.  They kissed deeply, gasping and panting as they reached the peak of their pleasure.

At the moment of their release, Sam threw her head back and cried out wordlessly.  He thought he had never seen anything more lovely, and then his own pleasure peaked, and he cried out her name softly as it flooded through him.

She collapsed into his arms, and he cradled her gently as their breathing and heartbeats slowed to normal.

"Oh my," she said, when she was able to speak.  "Thank you so much!"

"It was my pleasure," Jhoti said softly, smiling at her.  He kissed her gently.  "I am unlikely to ever experience anything like this again during a midnight swim."

She laughed, "I don't think this will ever happen to me again either!"

And then something moved in the woods.  Sam snuggled closer to him, murmuring, "Another wild cat - what did you call it?"

"A boabi," he responded, but the noise came again, and he sat upright, listening intently.  "But no, it is not.  It is a person."

"Oh my God," Sam gasped, "it can't be  . . . Jack?"

"Your companion?" Jhoti asked.

"My commanding officer!" she replied, her voice rising in panic.

"He will be angry?" Jhoti asked quickly.

"He'll be furious about me being out here, but if he finds me with you, I'll really be in serious trouble," Sam explained.

"I would not cause you trouble, my lovely Sam," Jhoti said.  He kissed her, hard, and then he was gone, moving quickly out of the water towards where his sarong lay.  He called softly over his shoulder as he left, "You were wonderful!"

Even as she panicked about what would happen when Jack arrived, Sam had time to appreciate the sight of his firm buttocks as he disappeared into the woods.

Jhoti had just left, moving silently with the ease of long familiarity into the woods, when Jack entered the clearing from the other side.

"Carter!" his voice cracked out.  Ooops, thought Sam, I've overstepped the mark here, he sounds pretty mad.

"Sir?" she responded steadily from the deep water of the pool.

"Just what the hell do you think you're doing?"

Well, she thought, I was making love to a complete stranger a few minutes ago, but she said, "Swimming, sir."

"Well I can see that Carter.  Why?"

"It seemed like a good idea at the time," she replied.  As she thought of Jhoti's body, and how he'd made her feel, she silently amended that to 'a very good idea'.

"Get out of the water Carter," Jack commanded.

"No sir," she said.

"WHAT?" he bellowed.

"Sir, if you'll look down, you'll understand why I refused," she said, fighting the laughter bubbling within her.  What she wouldn't give for the courage to simply strut from the water naked.  The look on his face would be priceless.  She'd finally get her own back for that "sweet little tank top" crack!

Jack glanced down, and realised that what was piled neatly at this feet was Sam's uniform - ALL of it.

"Skinny dipping, Sam?  Jeez!" but his tone was light, and she heard laughter in his voice now.

And she knew that it would be okay.  He'd chew her out, and she'd apologise, but there wouldn't be any permanent damage to their relationship.  He pointedly turned his back and moved away from her clothes.  She walked from the water and grabbed the towel she'd brought.

As they left the clearing, she cast a longing glance back at the water.  It had been an interesting evening.

The following morning, SG-1 found themselves at the Chaapa-ai, surrounded by the villagers who wished to farewell the feringhi travellers.  Jack and Daniel concluded their farewells to the elders, and Sam took up her position by the DHD, ready to dial them home.

And then Jhoti was there.  He held a garland of the sweet-smelling flowers in one hand.  He smiled brightly at her, treating her like the rest of the villagers, like the feringhi-rani.  And she felt a pang in her heart.  Had she meant so little to him?

As he moved forward to place the garland around her neck, his smile softened.  And she realised it was all an act in front of the villagers and the rest of SG-1.  He spoke very softly, for her ears only, "You will always be my lovely goddess, my water sprite, Sam.  I will never forget you."

He kissed her cheek, as the ritual obviously required, but his lips lingered on her skin, and she barely heard the words he spoke, "I love you Sam."

And as he drew away from her, he heard her softly whispered response, "I will never forget you either, Jhoti, or our midnight swim."

The Chaapa-ai spewed forth its magic surge, and then settled into the circle of shimmering light.  And SG-1 mounted the steps that would take them across the event horizon and home.  Sam resolutely kept her eyes forward.

The villagers watched the feringhi travellers leave through the great Star Circle.  And the Elders announced that the feringhi would return, as they had made an alliance.  There was great excitement in the village, as everyone discussed the feasts and festivals they would throw in honour of their new allies.

And one young man, with brown hair and blue eyes, thought longingly of the chance to take another midnight swim with the feringhi-rani, Captain Samantha Carter.
