Finding an Eye Care Professional

Types of Professionals

Ophthalmologists
Medical doctors that specialize in eye care (Eye-MD). They must complete four years of premedical school; plus four years of medical school; complete a one-year internship; and a three-year residency in ophthalmology. They detect and treat eye diseases, prescribe drugs and perform eye surgery. They also prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses.

Pediatric Ophthalmologist
An Ophthalmologist that has also completed at least a one-year fellowship in children's eye disorders.
Optometrists
They must complete four years of undergraduate school, plus four years of graduate training in a school of optometry. They receive a doctorate of optometry. They can prescribe eyeglasses or contact lenses. They can detect diseases, but cannot practice medicine. They are not medical doctors.

An Optometrist with special training in fitting low-vision aids: strong magnifying glasses, telescopic glasses, hand held telescopes, CCTV's, etc.
Ocularist
a highly skilled technician that fits and creates ocular prostheses: Scleral shells, prosthetic eyes and cosmetic contacts. The ocularist shows the patient how to handle and care for it and provides long-term care through periodic examinations

Opticians
have a two-year technical degree. They interpret prescriptions and fit eyeglasses. They can adjust repair and reproduce previously ordered contacts, eyeglasses and frames. They cannot examine or test your eyes.

Optometrists are fine for fitting glasses and most low vision doctors are Optometrists; they are good for fitting VI people with adaptive vision aids. Ophthalmologists are (eye MD's) they are the ones to see if you have a vision disorder that isn't correctable with glasses. Most small town doctors know less about Coloboma then the average person can find on the Internet. Ophthalmologists that work with a major city teaching college (medical school) see the most visually impaired children. They have special training and experience with rare eye disorders like Coloboma.
