The telegraph pole has been a feature of the railway landscape since at least the mid 1800's and has carried the wires for
telephone, block telegraph and repeaters,as well as track and minor circuits and telegraph, also power lines in some areas.
Arm lengths varied in length depending on the number of wires required to be carried and the number of insulators to carry them.Heights of poles also varied depending on location ,terrain to be crossed, and Particular railway company policy.
