The Monsters I Grew Up With
The Bride of Frankenstein
1935
Elsa Lancastor
The Macabre, satirical film is generally considered one of the greatest horror films of all time. A spectacular, bizzarre, high camp, excessive, humorous, farcical and surrealistic film.
Elsa Lancaster, known for her famous jerky robotic movements. Colin Clive as the deliriously famous Doctor Henry Frankenstein. Ernest Thesiger plays Dr. Septimus Pretorius, an eccentric, emaciated old alchemist, formally a Doctor of Philosophy at Henry's University who is thrown out for his unethical ideas. These days he is a necromancer who has miniaturized & imprisoned various human beings in glass jars. And lastly, Boris Karloff as the Frankenstein Monster back from the dead......again!
When the bandages are removed from ther Monster Bride, two uncomprehending globes stare back, "She's Alive! Alive!". The table is tilted to an upright vertical position, the Bride stiffly raises her arms and then collapses. After the bandages are removed she is viewed in full chilling splendor.

She wears a flowing white shroud and a wild frizzeled hairdo streaked with white from lightening charges. Her hair stands straight out behind her. Stitches are visable under her jawline. Her angular movements are bird-like, her head jerks and darts from one position to another. Appropriately, her white covering could be mistaken for a bridal gown!
Bride of Frankenstein was re-made in 1985 with Sting as Doctor Frankenstein, Clancy Brown as the Frankenstein Monster, and Jennifer Beales as the 2nd recreated Bride Monster. This time the movie was called "The Bride". Before it came Mel Brooks best satire "Young Frankenstein" (1974) honoring James Whale's original film by recreating the set of "The Bride of Frankenstein".
