| The Collingwood Football Club began in the mid-late 1800's. In those days Collingwood was merely an outer suburb of Melbourne, with vast countryside. A club was developed, the Collingwood Football Club, a club to represent Collingwood in the Melbourne competition later known as the VFL, now known as the AFL. Today, AFL football is played all over Australia. There are sixteen teams from all over the country. All teams play each other for the premiership, the number one position. Since 1896, Collingwood has won fourteen premierships, and holds the record for the most consecutive premierships- four in a row. Collingwood has the largest supporter base, and had over one million members go through their gates last season! Their home ground is at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which is now being redeveloped to hold a capacity crowd of 120,000 people. Although the MCG is their home ground, they train at their former home ground, Victoria Park or otherwise known as McHale Stadium. Eddie McGuire (T.V Personality and Club President) has taken the club forward by almost doubling the clubs income and finding them a new training ground. Olympic Park is the new venue, which held the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games. |
