| In The Rundown, I thought that The Rock proved himself as one of the better celebrity-turn-actors that had recently made the switch. Although he had a couple of other films under his belt at the time, that film made me a believer. Walking Tall is in many ways like Rundown: large, exciting, preposterous stunts with a lot of big men groaning in immense pain. Walking Tall, I regret to inform, is just nowhere near as good. This is a remake of a true story about Chris Vaughn, an ex-military man who comes back to his small town to find a casino has taken control. The owner and his security cohorts deal drugs like candy even to kids, and they exploit their earnings. The sheriff and his cohorts do nothing to stop the inhumanity. In fact, they benefit from it. So when Dwayne THE ROCK Johnson enters the picture, you can bet that a lot of big men will be groaning with pain before the end. He decides to take matters into his own hands and sort of passes some of the effort to his friend, played by Johnny Knoxville. I have to say, right now, that Knoxville is the best character in the film. Yes, you read that last line right. Meanwhile, Chris ties old bonds together and a woman gets involved. And this is where the film gets desperate. We have a film that is one hour and fifteen minutes long, and a whole subplot could have been deleted. This is also where the film couldve taken a hugely intriguing and even more entertaining turn, which is follow the story through. Now, what do I mean by that? Well...this started great. The character development was all right and the story was getting better and better. But it just stops abruptly, leaving out so many good scenes that should have been shown. I have nothing else to say except that when the former star of Jackass gives the best performance of an action film...theres something horribly wrong. * |
