Manhattan in the late 1980's. Wall Street was big. So was cocaine. They often mixed. We had gone past the time of "me", we were now at the time of "me, me, me, me, me, me". Getting ahead was the number one thing, and if you looked good, talked well, and made a lot of money, everyone pretended to love you. Even if you were a homicidial maniac.
Patrick Bateman is indeed a homicidial maniac. He is also sexist, racist, and a general asshole. But in a world obsessed with surfaces, Bateman dresses well and has a nice smile. And even as he begins to descend into complete and total madness even more rapidly than before, the world chooses to ignore the blood, the bodies, the missing people, and instead worry about whose business card looks the best.
Mary Haron adapted this movie from Bret Easton Ellis' much more explicit 1989 novel. Featuring a pitch perfect performance by Christian Bale as Bateman, this was one of the best films of 2000.

MEMORANLE LINES

PATRICK BATEMAN: I just feel like, like...I just...GOTTA KILL A LOT OF PEOPLE!!!!!!

PATRICK BATEMAN: I know my behavior can seem, at times, to be a little bit erratic...

PATRICK BATEMAN: That's it. It's over. We're breaking up.
EVELYN WILLIAMS: No. I don't think it would work. We have too many of the same friends.

PATRICK BATEMAN: You are a fucking ugly bitch, and I want to kill you and play with your blood.

PATRICK BATEMAN: Then, Huey did this. "Hip To Be Square". A song so catchy, most people don't listen to the lyrics. But they should! Because it is not just a comment of the postive aspects of conformity, and the importance of trends, but it is also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey Paul!

PATRICK BATEMAN: There is an idea of a Patrick Bateman; some kind of abstraction. But there is no real me: only an entity, something illusory. And though I can hide my cold gaze, and you can shake my hand and feel flesh gripping yours and maybe you can even sense our lifestyles are probably comparable... I simply am not there.

PATRICK BATEMAN: I have all the characteristics of a human being: blood, flesh, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust. Something horrible is happening inside of me and I don't know why. My nightly bloodlust has overflown into my days. I feel lethal, on the verge of frenzy. I think my mask of sanity is about to slip.
