Links

Educational links:
College of Charleston: Small college in the heart of Charleston, student ratio 8 females to 1 male.
The Citadel: Military academy on the northern part of the Charleston peninsula, downtown easy to reach by bus.
University of South Carolina Medical School:hospital close to downtown (on Calhoun Street), across from Eckerd pharmacy.

Public Transportation:
CARTA Bus: The only way to get around town without a car, the beach and the mall are too far away even for a bike. Nevertheless not very reliable, sometimes too late but sometimes also too early. Inconvienient schedule.
Amtrak: To get away from Charleston, cheaper than a plane but takes much longer. I took it to Miami, Washington DC, New York City, and Buffalo, New York. The trains through Charleston are usually late, around 1h.

News and Information:
The Post and Courier:local newspaper, useful for local events. Read the New York Times, USA Today, or Washington Post for other news.

Shopping in Charleston (walking distance, or by bus)
Harris Teeter: On East Bay, about 10 min. walk, take Wentworth and walk east until reaching East Bay
Eckerd: Two of the chain drugstore are in walking distance, one on East Bay close to Harris Teeter, another on Calhoun, across from the University hospital (both approx. 10 min. walk). Excellent for photo development.
Citadel Mall: Only mall that can be reached by bus (without switching buses). Offers a good selection for shopping. Old Navy, Parisian, Dollartree, etc. Take bus #1 to reach the mall, takes about 45 min. from downtown.
