We start our tour of Charleston with King Street. The College's main buildings go from Wentworth in the south to Calhoun in the North, Coming Street in the West and King Street in the East. There are some buildings beyond Coming and King Street, there are some even on Meeting Street, but most of the campus is in this small square. King Street has many small shops and stores as well as restaurants and coffee shops. For Christmas, King Street was blocked off and a huge Christmas tree was set up (picture to the left). In our tour we walk till Beaufain and then take a left turn to reach the market. From the corner of Beaufain and King, we can already see the first building of the market. | ![]() |

On our way to the Waterfront Park, I show you the Indigo Lounge,
a night club. I have been a couple of times to this place even though I
am not really a fan of night clubs. Charleston offers all kind of nightlife.
There are many, many nice restaurants, two small movie theaters (in walking
distance), many small theaters, many more clubs and bars such as the Irish
Pub, and sometimes there are also different kinds of parties.
However, I rarely had the chance to enjoy a night life. Studying means something different in America than in Germany. Here I felt I learned something for the first time in my university life. |
| Yet another interesting building before we get to the Waterfront Park is the US Custom House at the lower end of the Market. This grand structure always impresed me as I walked passed. I felt proud to be able to live in Charleston and be able to study here. Many of my fondest memories come to mind when I see this building. Not too far from the market in the opposite direction from the Custom House is the American Movie Theater and I still remember watching the Chinese action film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon there, an evening that I will never forget because of someone very special. | ![]() |

Finally we reach the Waterfront Park, which is to me not only one
of the most beauticul places in Charleston but also in the world. Now that
I am back in Germany I can only think back with a longing to see this place
again at least once. From here we walk on to the Battery, anolther nice
park. Unfortunatly there are no pictures but I definetly recommend a stroll.
Many times I have been to both these parks to think about life and why
some things are just bound to go wrong.
I saw the light of a new world but I could not touch it. It was as if it would break once I did and so I could not dare. Yet I tried too hard to reach the moon and crashed because I was foolish enough to lean too far out of the window of my aircraft. I don't know what would have happened if I had been more cautious. You can never tell but I have learned my lessons and I hope that for the future I can be more careful so that I do not repeat the mistakes that I did. |

Coming from the Waterfront Park we go along Broad Street until we see the beautiful Old Post Office (pictures to the top left and the middle). From there we walk down Meeting Street to view the curch to our left. I have forgotten where the old house to the right top is and the German Lutheran Church to the right is on King Street just north of Calhoun Street. This is the only church that I visited and that only once. I learned that many Americans take religion very seriously unlike most people in Germany. | ![]() |
