SONGS, PICTURES AND STORIES: Though the Underground loves new discoveries, it also admires releases that bring a sense of
order to chaos, and better still, turn what was once a jumble into an enjoyable listening or viewing experience. One
undeniable hodgepodge is the Beatles' promotional films and videos, many of which exist in multiple versions and within that,
differing levels of quality. New DVD label Picture Perfect aspires to do right by that material on "Chronology 1 and 2". The
unusual tact taken here is that both discs cover the same time span, 1962-1970, creating two similar compilations, but each
featuring different versions and promos, sort of kindred greatest hits packages with some 70 songs between them. Where
"Chronology 1" (with the yellow cover) has "promo version 4" of "Paperback Writer", "Chronology 2" (with the green cover)
uses the "color garden version". The label promises "best quality to date" across the discs, citing several new sources that
make their debut here, among them an Apple in-house promotional reel that includes many of the new versions seen in "
Anthology" in their unedited state; a new 35mm-film source for the "Cheswick house version of "Rain"; and numerous TV
appearance upgrades. Both discs feature five bonus tracks and previews of future releases. The label says, "These DVDs have
been specially created to eliminate the need for any previous collections of this material."
