The Beginning

Collecting toys, posters, magazines and autographs is an exciting hobby. I can trace my collecting habit to a Death Star Droid action figure I received from Santa, Christmas 1979. Because there are a lot of memories invested in the Death Star Droid, I don't think I'll ever sell it. My collecting habit goes through phases. From action figures to coins, back to figures, to stamps and back to figures, but the one hobby that I've stuck with for over 20 years is collecting movie posters.

FIRST POSTERS

My first posters were video release posters. I remember riding my bike throughout Syracuse, NY searching video store after video store for posters. Some days I would dedicate myself and rout 5-10 video stores within a 30 mile radius. That is alot of miles for a 14 year old. In 1987 "The Lost Boys" came out. It was, and still is, my favorite movie poster. I like the way the colors contrast with the actors on the poster. "The Lost Boys" poster opened the door to a whole new addiction. Movie poster collecting.

MOVIE POSTER COLLECTING

Movie poster collecting is a hobby for many people. I like movie posters because of the art, the feeling of limited supply, and the aura of excitement that escalates and explodes after finding a treasured poster. Collecting these rare gems jumped started my career working in film, TV and theatre. You'll never know who you'll meet at your local video store. 10 years ago I met Ron Bonk from           B-Movie Theatre   and Sub Rosa Studios. Ron is the driving force behind B-movies and independant film/video making. Through Sub Rosa, Ron helps dozens of independant film-makers release their creative ideas on DVD and VHS. Ron also directs, produce and shoots feature films. I've worked on a number of his projects that he shot, wrote or directed in Syracuse, NY. Sub Rosa releases are available for purchase at a number of film conventions including, Chiller and Cinema Wasteland. I have collaberated with Ron on a few of his projects and through his inspirations landed a few gigs working on independant film productions. Working on film productions lead me to working at the   Bristol Omnitheater   full time as an IMAX projectionist. While working full time in a theater, I was able to afford a new car to further my poster collecting habits. With a car I can drive to film conventions and buy movie posters. At a film convention I would rather buy from a dealer than over the Inernet, because a potential poster is a tangible object in my hand and not a description over the Net. Purchasing a poster at a film convention can also save me money by bargaining over the price and there are no shipping charges.

CINEMA WASTELAND

Cinema Wasteland is my favorite film convention because attendees can drink, eat, get drunk with, sell, talk and watch original 16mm film prints with the famous guests in attendance. Guest will do live commentary durring their film presentation. It is like having the director, or actor, do a live commentary in your living room while watching a DVD. Cinema Wasteland is also a great resource to meeting new and different people. Through conventions, I have made many new contacts. I have been able to aquire many items to enhance my habits. Another reason I highly recommend a Wasteland show, to any horror aficionado, is the great deals you can get from the dealers room. If you are patient and thorough, many treasures await you in the dealers room.
