There is a common belief among many Christians that the well articulated sediments of earth are a result of a violent global flood. Is this true? Could a flood that took place with the chaos and violence as the biblical flood is described by many produce the deposits that we see today? Does the bible itself say that the flood was chaotic and violent to the degree that many say? Does the bible say that all life including plant life died in that flood? In this small article we will look at some of the findings of science and also see what the bible actually says and what it doesn't say. It is always amazing to find out that what many say the bible says is, many times, not in scripture. Numbers shown in scripture s are Strong's numbers copied from the KJV+ version.
The Book of Genesis is God's word to humanity. The geological record is the frozen record of all that has transpired on earth in the past ages. On day six of creation God says that at that time the work of creating was finished. The earth was ready for human habitation and much like the world is today with a few minor adjustments made over the past 6000 years or so. God knows the end from the beginning and when He finished creating, all the oceans, islands and continents were in place for the placing of the nations in their respective pre-ordained areas. God did not re-create the earth after the flood as some claim as this was not necessary. Massive plate tectonic action during the days of Peleg did not occur as many assume from Gen. 10:25. The dividing of the "earth" or nations was the result of different languages given to the different family groups of Noah's children.
In the geological record we find deposits of potash, limestone, chalk, coal, salt and others of very pure content. This would not be the case if these deposits were formed by catastrophic action. The material would be a jumble of plants, bones, boulders, sand and gravel. Under those conditions coal deposits would not have formed. Coal deposits are quite pure in content and not a mixture of debris. Chalk deposits are the same, being made up of tiny skeletal remains of microscopic creatures. The white cliffs of Dover, England is a good example of this type of deposit. In many areas of the world salt deposits are found in beds of several feet in thickness to 300 feet in thickness as those found in Wyoming. These deposits are precipitate deposits and were formed under calm and warm conditions in shallow seas. It took a long time for these deposits to form. Deposits of sandstone, limestone, marble, slate, shale and others are also deposits of material formed under conditions that favored a well articulated formation.
One of the problems encountered when one studies this subject of material deposition is the problem of preconceived ideas one has before studying the subject. The only way to study the subject is to look at all the evidence that has been discovered by researchers and to look at what the bible says. In the end the two will agree. The main difference in the study of the earth's past is the origin of the universe and the origin of life on earth. This paper will not go into the complex study of origins or the geology of the earth's past. What this paper is about is what the bible actually says concerning the flood and what the bible doesn't say. The sediments of the earth contain the information of how they were formed, the time it takes to form them, the ages that each layer represents, the life that lived during that time and there are many research papers and textbooks that go into detail about these events. The principles of physics, chemistry, mechanics and life are the same for all time as these things do not change but always work according the laws set down in the beginning.
What I will do in this small article is discuss some of the things that people say about the flood. The are many assumptions that people add to this argument based on personal ideas that scripture is silent on. I will add links to web sites discussing this issue on both sides-young earth global flood and old earth local flood and the pros and cons of each. I will list textbooks on the subject of geology also.
Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. Gen 2:2 And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made
Isa 46:10 Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times [the things] that are not [yet] done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
In the King James Version of the bible the word "'erets" (Strongs number 776) is translated as:
"land" 1509 times;
"earth" 712 times;
"ground" 97 times;
"country" 92 times;
"countries" 48 times;
"lands" 34 times;
"world" 4 times;
"way" 3 times;
"common" 1 time;
"field" 1 time;
"nations" 1 time.
In the King James Version of the bible the word "adamah" (Strongs number 127) is translated as:
"land" 124 times;
"earth" 53 times;
"ground" 44 times;
"country" 1 time;
"lands" 3 times;
"husbandman" 1 time;
"husbandry" 1 time;
.
It is evident from the translation of the word "'erets", that this one word has been translated into a number of English words. The word is rarely if ever translated to mean the entire planet earth. I doubt that throughout the ages of human existence that people would have understood the concept of a round planet the size of earth or the mechanics of planetary orbits, etc. That would have to wait until knowledge about the cosmos was available through observation and science. Whatever the level of knowledge and understanding of the creation, the book of Genesis would still be true. It appears that this word is translated into the different meanings based on what the observation of the author was at the time. This was inspired by God to the author but the writer still had the freedom to express the situation as he saw it but still be accurate. The word then was translated into it's various English meanings by what the translators thought the best description for the situation. Many times the meaning was clearly a description of a nation, a land area, the area encompassed by where the "dome" of the sky met the earth (about a 22 mile radius), etc. Thus the bible would be understandable to all people of all ages as the description was from a personal observation and would look the same to any person in the same place or in a readers or listeners mind. In all of this the bible maintains it's accuracy. Eventually the Bible and Science will be in agreement because what the Bible says is true and what science finds in the frozen record is true also. There is no discrepancy between the two records.
After years of studying the bible and science I have come to the following conclusions as I read the book of Genesis:
1. That the Bible is God's record book of His creation and acts of creating.
2. That the earths frozen record in the rocks documents God's creation.
3. That at the end of day six the work of creating was finished.
4. That the earth then was as it is today with a few minor alterations.
5. That no re-creation was necessary after the flood.
6. That God had decided beforehand where all the nations would reside.
7. That the Garden of Eden was different from the rest of the world.
8. That all the climate systems were in operation.
9. That the mountains, deserts, oceans, islands, continents were as they are today.
10. That Genesis 10:25 is talking about the "earth" or nations being divided by language, family lines and race and not by "plate tectonics" as most nations are divided by invisible land boundaries. The one great Afro-Eurasia land mass houses the greatest number of nations and these nations are not "separated" by seas.
11. That all the geological deposits were in existence in Adam's day. Bitumen (tar deposits-fossil origin) was used to seal the Ark. Coal and oil deposits as well as limestone, chalk, metal deposits that were refined and used in making bronze and other implements and other sedimentary deposits existed from ages of time before.
12.That the laws that govern the universe and earth are, as God is, the same yesterday (all the way back to the very beginning), today (from the time this was written to now), and forever (all the way into the future).
Was the flood global or local? It is possible that humanity by this time was still concentrated in an area known now as the Middle East or an even smaller area. God said He would destroy humanity and beasts and fowl and creeping things from the earth (also can be translated "land" and "nations"). It is possible that this area contained all the domesticated animals along with the entire assemblage of wild beasts and was a stable ecosystem. In that case all animal life indigenous to that area would have to be carried through the flood, if it were local, in order to re-populate the area as before. Science has observed that when many types of animals, birds, rodents, etc. are destroyed from an area it may take a century or more for animals of the same kind to move in and re-populate the area. So, even if this were a local flood it would be necessary to bring the area back to what it was before to preserve the balance of nature. All the creatures in this area were together before and it would be easy to re-establish that balance and familiarity as before. After the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens in Washington State the are was denuded of all plant life in a certain area and covered with volcanic ash. Still the elk herds that had escaped and lived in that area before came back and "surveyed" the area where they once lived. The elk were familiar with the area even though it didn't look the same. The elk "knew" that this was their former home. It is interesting to note that the bible says nothing about destroying the plant life, bacteria, insects, and any other type outside of the stated varieties although some believe that is what happened. Those who believe in a young earth find it necessary to believe that all plant life was destroyed and deposited in well articulated masses to form the coal fields that are on the earth. In a chaotic event that is commonly described as a global flood, the deposits would be, not plants alone, but plants, mud, gravel, boulders and sand. This would not produce the pure coal fields that we see today.
God said that He would destroy all flesh (Strong's #1320). This appears to be referring to the human race and not the animals. The animals in an area of a flood would be killed along with what people were there. "All flesh", had become corrupt, and if this includes creatures other than humans then by some strange way animal flesh had become corrupted. It is not known how this could be since humans and animals cannot breed and produce offspring as we now know from biology. I do not think the nations at that time had the knowledge to manipulate the DNA of humans or animals or splice parts of human DNA and animal DNA to produce a hybrid type of creature which science today is trying to do or growing human organs in animals such as swine, etc. Whatever this was it seems to pertain to animals in contact with human societies. However it may have had nothing to do with non human creatures only that if the area where civilization was located was flooded would it be necessary preserve the area's mix of domestic and wild animals. These animals would be familiar with this territory since the landscape didn't appear to change very much as the rivers mentioned in Genesis 2 are still where they were before. There is no mention of God re-creating old animal types after the flood.
The book of Genesis is a highlight of God's creative work. There is enough stated in the book to give understanding to people of all education levels and cultures. The details God left to humans to find out using the record in Genesis as a foundation for further research. It will be difficult to see the connection between Genesis and the findings of science if we come into the research with pre-conceived ideas and attempt to make science agree with, not Genesis, but our own prejudices. We need to look at all the possibilities that the meaning of words are and then match this with the findings of, not theories of, science. Biblical theories and science theories must be left behind and let the facts in Genesis and science speak for themselves.
There are difficult problems with both a "local" flood and a "global" flood. With a local flood is the question of where would there be a parcel of land that could hold enough water to wipe out humanity in the entire area where humans were in that time, and not spill out too quickly. With a global flood there is the question of how the water abated and where it went to. The "windows of heaven" and "fountains of the deep" are not explained in scripture enough to give a clear picture of the meaning of these terms. There have been a number of explanations but nothing definite has emerged.
One the one hand there is the idea that all the sediments of this planet were produced by the global flood and as the water spilled off the land after the rain stopped, all topographical features today were carved out by the waters roaring off the land. This idea presents enormous problems of physics and hydraulics. It would help if those who believe this idea would make a drawing of the globe with the water above all the mountains and then show graphically where all the water drained to. If the whole planet was covered with water there would be no place for the water to drain except a large (and I do mean large) hole in the earth for the draining to occur. Or maybe a large number of smaller holes. But these "holes" have never been found. It they did exist then there must be evidence somewhere of this action. If there were holes then all you would have is huge whirlpools of water draining into the holes and as water approached the whirlpool from increasingly farther distances the velocity of the water at the greater distances would become less and less. This would not be the type of flow that would carve out canyons like the Grand Canyon or Kings Canyon in California. The Grand Canyon is a "meandering" canyon and as such is hardly a likely candidate for rapid runoff through soft sediments, which if soft enough to be quickly eroded, could not have maintained it structure in a semi-liquid state. It would have spilled out into a pancake like shape over a much wider area. There are other papers that describe the geological processes and the findings of science, the evidence from oil core drilling, the many formations themselves and their contents of fossils and types of sediments. At the end of this paper I will add a list of books and links to web pages that go into this aspect of history more thoroughly than this small paper could possibly do. Each person interested in this subject should study both the biblical record and the evidence found in the sediments of the earth and come to their own conclusion based on evidence and not pre-conceived notions.
If the flood were local, an area where all humanity lived at that time, then the biblical explanation of how the water abated would make more sense. A wind blew over the water for a number of days to lower the level of the water. This indicates the process of evaporation where dry hot winds (dry winds originate over dry desert areas) would pick up enough moisture from the flood waters and carry this saturated air over land area away from the flood area and deposit it as rain or snow in mountain areas. A hot dry wind can evaporate enormous quantities of water in a short time and carry it to faraway places. If the whole planet was covered with water there couldn't be a hot dry wind because of evaporation all the earth's atmosphere would be saturated and no more evaporation could take place. It is interesting to note that during the exodus from Egypt that God caused an East wind to blow all night over the Red Sea and dried the lake bottom so the ground would be hard enough for the army of Israelites to cross. All these events were accomplished by natural methods built into the system at the beginning. God could have, in both instances, dried the water instantly, but He didn't. He tweeked the system just a little and let "nature" take care of the situation. God uses a combination of supernatural modes and physical modes to accomplish His purpose. God caused the wind in both instances but this can't be proven by any real physical evidence. Hot winds blow continuously around the world and evaporate enormous quantities of water so this would not seem like a directed event. That the wind was a direct action by God is something that a person will have to believe by faith in God's word in the scriptures.
Another disturbing thing that is said by those who believe in a young earth is that all plant life was also killed during the flood in order to create the vast clean coal deposits that we use today. It is strange that God, in destroying everything because of man's sin, would use that vast destruction to create coal deposits, oil deposits, limestone, chalk, marble, dolomite, ore deposits, and on and on, to bring so many blessings to humanity. If effect, we are being blessed because of sin. That does not make a whole lot of sense. All of these vast resources, which God promised to us, were created over long spans of time, before man or sin arrived. Also Noah sent out a dove and it came back with an olive leaf in it's beak. Because the dove had an olive leaf to bring back proves that at some distance from the Ark there were trees growing and were not killed by the flood. In another article I document the age of the hardy Bristlecone Pines in the White Mountains of Eastern California whose tree rings indicate these trees have been growing for almost 5000 years which puts them growing in time before the biblical flood. If the whole planet was denuded due to the flood then Noah would have departed from the Ark into a world that resembled a lunar landscape and it would have taken thousands of years to grow back as it is now around the world. Noah would have looked out of the Ark and said "Come look everybody-ve haf landed on der moon". If it were like this, life would have been a bleak existence for a long time. But Noah left the ark, sacrificed some of the animals, planted a vineyard, made some wine, built a fire, made wine kegs, built a house, and lived as before-just with fewer people around. In subsequent chapters in Genesis we see that cities were built, people farmed, raised cattle and sheep, hunted wildlife such as deer, traveled from country to country, and did many other activities one would expect from a well supplied planet. All these activities were done in much less time than it would have taken the planet to re-establish it' flora. It takes an enormous amount of time for plant and animal life to spread out from scratch and create a livable biosphere on a planet wide scale. In a catastrophic flood all the great soil bases of the earth would have been destroyed as everything would be thoroughly mixed-sand, clay, rocks, etc. Nature takes about 500 years to produce each inch of topsoil with, of course, the help of bacteria and other microbes, grasses of various types and good weather. Soil forms slowly and cannot be forced to move faster than it does today. God also does not force nature to move faster than it is physically capable of doing. Forests do do not create good soil bases for cultivation. Wherever these people went it seems they found these things that way, especially in Canaan where grapes grew as big as golf balls.
Gen 8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that [was] with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;
Gen 8:3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.
It took 150 days for the water to abate. This most likely was to make sure that the water did not run off fast enough to cause a lot of damage to the landscape. Rather than a catastrophic event it was controlled to prevent major damage. After the flood, in subsequent chapter of Genesis the rivers and other features were readily identified. If the flood cause the formation and subsequent erosion of mountains then the whole planet would be unrecognizable. But everything was where it was before the flood event. As an aside, for the rivers to be running as described in Genesis 2 and 3, there would have been higher (mountainous) areas for the water to run down to the seas. So the high hills and mountains were in existence before the flood as Genesis says the Ark landed in the mountains of Ararat, an already known area.

Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. (KJV)
Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, on the seventeenth day of the second month-on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.(NIV)
Gen 7:17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters increased, and bare up the ark, and it was lift up above the earth. Gen 7:18 And the waters prevailed, and were increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went upon the face of the waters. Gen 7:19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth; and all the high hills, that [were] under the whole heaven, were covered. Gen 7:20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered. Gen 7:21 And all flesh died that moved upon the earth, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of beast, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth, and every man: Gen 7:22 All in whose nostrils [was] the breath of life, of all that [was] in the dry [land], died. Gen 7:23 And every living substance was destroyed which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and the creeping things, and the fowl of the heaven; and they were destroyed from the earth: and Noah only remained [alive], and they that [were] with him in the ark. Gen 7:24 And the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred and fifty days. (KJV)
Gen 7:17 For forty days the flood kept coming on the earth, and as the waters increased they lifted the ark high above the earth. 18 The waters rose and increased greatly on the earth, and the ark floated on the surface of the water. 19 They rose greatly on the earth, and all the high mountains under the entire heavens were covered. 20 The waters rose and covered the mountains to a depth of more than twenty feet. [2] , [3] 21 Every living thing that moved on the earth perished-birds, livestock, wild animals, all the creatures that swarm over the earth, and all mankind. 22 Everything on dry land that had the breath of life in its nostrils died. 23 Every living thing on the face of the earth was wiped out; men and animals and the creatures that move along the ground and the birds of the air were wiped from the earth. Only Noah was left, and those with him in the ark. 24 The waters flooded the earth for a hundred and fifty days.(NIV)
Gen 8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that [was] with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged; Gen 8:2 The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained; Gen 8:3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated. Gen 8:4 And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat. Gen 8:5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth [month], on the first [day] of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen. Gen 8:6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made: Gen 8:7 And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth. Gen 8:8 Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground; Gen 8:9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters [were] on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark. Gen 8:10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark; Gen 8:11 And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth [was] an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth. Gen 8:12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more. Gen 8:13 And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first [month], the first [day] of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry. Gen 8:14 And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried. (KJV)
Gen 8:1 But God remembered Noah and all the wild animals and the livestock that were with him in the ark, and he sent a wind over the earth, and the waters receded. 2 Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky. 3 The water receded steadily from the earth. At the end of the hundred and fifty days the water had gone down, 4 and on the seventeenth day of the seventh month the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. 5 The waters continued to recede until the tenth month, and on the first day of the tenth month the tops of the mountains became visible.6 After forty days Noah opened the window he had made in the ark 7 and sent out a raven, and it kept flying back and forth until the water had dried up from the earth. 8 Then he sent out a dove to see if the water had receded from the surface of the ground. 9 But the dove could find no place to set its feet because there was water over all the surface of the earth; so it returned to Noah in the ark. He reached out his hand and took the dove and brought it back to himself in the ark. 10 He waited seven more days and again sent out the dove from the ark. 11 When the dove returned to him in the evening, there in its beak was a freshly plucked olive leaf! Then Noah knew that the water had receded from the earth. 12 He waited seven more days and sent the dove out again, but this time it did not return to him. 13 By the first day of the first month of Noah's six hundred and first year, the water had dried up from the earth. Noah then removed the covering from the ark and saw that the surface of the ground was dry. 14 By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry.(NIV)
Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. (KJV)
Gen 2:1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. (NIV)
Gen 2:4 These [are] the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, Gen 2:5 And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and [there was] not a man to till the ground. Gen 2:6 But there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground. Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. Gen 2:8 And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. Gen 2:10 And a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted, and became into four heads. Gen 2:11 The name of the first [is] Pison: that [is] it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where [there is] gold; Gen 2:12 And the gold of that land [is] good: there [is] bdellium and the onyx stone. Gen 2:13 And the name of the second river [is] Gihon: the same [is] it that compasseth the whole land of Ethiopia. Gen 2:14 And the name of the third river [is] Hiddekel: that [is] it which goeth toward the east of Assyria. And the fourth river [is] Euphrates. (KJV)
Gen 2:4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens- 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth [2] and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth [3] and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams [4] came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground- 7 the LORD God formed the man [5] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground-trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. In the middle of the garden were the tree of life and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. 10 A river watering the garden flowed from Eden; from there it was separated into four headwaters. 11 The name of the first is the Pishon; it winds through the entire land of Havilah, where there is gold. 12 (The gold of that land is good; aromatic resin [6] and onyx are also there.) 13 The name of the second river is the Gihon; it winds through the entire land of Cush. [7] 14 The name of the third river is the Tigris; it runs along the east side of Asshur. And the fourth river is the Euphrates.(NIV)
The following is a quote from Gen 3:20. It says Eve was the mother of "all living". From biology we know that Eve was the mother of all living modern humans that were the descedents of her and Adam. She was not the mother of all living creatures on earth, only humans descended from her and Adam. This may have caused confusion in ancient times and may be where the idea of "Mother Earth", "Earth Goddess" or "GAEA" came from. From the inference of the wording we know what the meaning is although it did not say she was the mother of "all living humans descended from her and Adam". I say descended because I do not believe she is the mother of Neandertal, Homo Erectus, etc. I don't know what those creatures were or what their purpose was but I don't think they had anything to do with Adam and Eve.
