adamah Strong's #127
The Hebrew word "adamah" is translated into a number of English words. It is rarely used as referring to the whole planet earth but most time to land or national areas of limited extent. In Genesis 1.1 it is referring to the entire planet earth. At many other places is refers to land areas as taken from a human viewpoint. In any scripture where the Hebrew is translated into "earth", "whole earth", "all the earth", etc the meaning will be understood by the context of the sentence or verse and a knowledge of the geography of that area. The meaning will be what the author meant when it was written. The challenge is to find out what the author meant when the area in question is mentioned. The following is from Strong's Concordance that show the number of times the translation uses a particular English word to describe the meaning of the one word "adamah". Following the list is Strong's definition of two Hebrew words that is at various places in scripture translated as "earth, ground, etc". The problem with defining what the meaning is is due to the translating of the one Hebrew word "adamah" into eleven different English words. The translators used the best English word that they thought fit the meaning the best. All the English words used are self explanatory except the words "earth" and "world" which mean to many that it is referring to the entire planet. Such is not always the case and must be defined more precisely.
