My maternal grandmother died of cancer. She had come to live at
the home of my parents in High Springs in order to be cared for
properly. My aunts tell me she was a woman of extraordinary
kindness and resolve. According to them, she was a ÒSaintÓ just
for managing to live with my grandfather and raise her children.
After her death, the younger daughters lived in the homes of
siblings both in South Carolina and Florida until they came of
age. [Jerry Pricher, 1998]
My maternal grandfather lived for many years at 203 E. Voorhis
Avenue in Deland, Florida. My brother and I both lived at his
place during our years at Stetson. Norm once had to bail him
out of jail after he had knocked a man off a bar stool. This
was when he was in his seventies. My grandfather claimed to
have actually witnessed the last public hanging in Florida, in
Deland (year unknown to me). In regard to his drinking, during
the later years of his life he did not drink. He claimed to
have had a Òreligious experienceÓ. Be that as it may, during
the time I lived with my grandfather, from 1969 to 1970, I never
saw him take a drink nor did I ever see evidence of liquor in
his house. [Jerry Pricher, December 1998]
Joe Jones was a Baptist Minister and fifth-grade school teacher.
He and Vivian lived in Phoenix, Arizona during their teaching
careers and later in life retired to Florida to be near their
family.
