Berlin Airlift
While European countries supported by the U.S. was rebuilding, the U.S. & its allies clashed eith the Soviet Union over Germany. Germany was Soviet's former enemy, so it felt like making thier former enemy weak & divided.
But, in 1948, France, Britain, and the U.S. decided to withdraw from Germany. They allowed their three occupation zones to form one nation. The Soviet responded by holding the West Berlin hostage.
Since the Berlin Airlift took place, the Cold War between the U.S. & the Soviet Union had nearly came into conflict.             Berlin was divided into four zones. The S.U. cut off the highway, water, and rail traffic into Berlin's western zones. The cities faced starvation since no food or supplies could get in.
However, the U.S. and Britain assigned their officials to fly supplies into the four divided zones of West Berlin. Planes landed there nearly every three minutes. The planes had brought 2.3 million tons of supplies into it.
Nevertheless, the Soviet Union lifted the Berlin blockade in May 1949, admitting the defeat.
These increasing conflicts were the beginnings og the Cold War. The superpowers both strengthened their dominance. Their conflict had also led to the global competition.
