In June 1945, the U.S. and the Soviet Union set aside their differences. There were 48 other countries joined them to form United Nations. This organization was intended to prevent aggression between countries. General assembly was the the large body established by the UN. Each UN member nation could take parts in any elections. The five permanent members of the security Council were Britain, China, France, the U.S. and the Soviet Union. This prevented any members from voting as a dominant group in the Council to override the others. |

|
The forerunner of the UN was the League of Nations, the organization established in 1919 under the Treaty of Versailles to promote international and cooperation and to achieve peace and security. The League of Nations ended its activites after failing to prevent the second WW.
Later on, the new charter to form the UN was signed on June 26, 1945, by the representatives of 50 countries. Poland , which was not included in it, signed it later and became one of the original 51 Member States.
The UN officially came into existence on Oct. 24, 1945, and the United Nations Day has been celebrated on this day each year. |
