NATO
North Atlantic Treaty Organization
The Berlin blockade heightened Western Europe's fears of Soviet aggression. As a result, in 1949, ten Western European nations joined with the U.S. and Canada to form a defensive millitary alliance. These nations promised to meet an attack on any NATO member with armed force. For the U.S. , NATO membership marked the country's first peacetime military commitment.
The Soviet Union viewed NATO as a threat.....In response, it also developed an alliance system in 1955 as part of their own containment policy...It was known as
Warsaw Pact.
