One of the things that troubles me about our political climate is that we just don�t seem to learn from our mistakes�. There was a time when the Republicans came along and won both houses of congress� They did so because they had a positive plan of action. They came up with the �contract with America��. the �personal responsibility act� among others� Then for some inexplicable reason they seem to lose interest in coming up with positive issues, instead paid more attention to Clinton�s sex-life. Suddenly, the Republican party went from being a party of action and Ideas to a party of attack and attack�� and they lost their grip on the two houses�. Shame, shame� Look at Newt Gingrinch for example� An exceptional speaker who was a master politician in his time. You could listen to the guy, and almost everything he said made sense� you found yourself shaking your head in agreement with his common sense approach�.. but Newt will be forever remembered as just another Republican Has-been who wanted to investigate BJ�s in the White House. It got to a point where I started to believe that there really wasn�t many good guys left in the Republican Party�. And that the Democrats were the party of action and Ideas�
I �was� ready to Vote for Al Gore�. When for whatever reasons he decided he didn�t want my vote. Where as Bill Clinton was a politician who could work across both sides of the aisle and get things accomplished�. Suddenly our new Democratic Candidate was �looking for a fight�. GWB talked about getting things done and being a uniter not a divider�. (arguments can be had on whether he has lived up to this)�. While Al Gore said he was going to �fight for you�. Of course Al Gore also said that I did not deserve one of his �targeted tax-cuts� started talking about minimum wage and unions�. And it became clear that I simply wasn�t one of those that Gore was going to fight for. In fact, he pretty much made me believe that he was going to fight against me. GWB did not win my vote, Al Gore lost it�.
Now, the party of Al Gore has taken a frightening new path�. They refuse to step up and become a party of action and Ideas� instead are becoming a clone of the failed Republicans of the 90�s. Attack this, and investigate that, question this, subpoena that� all the while not telling me a damn thing that they plan on doing� Seems that they are so troubled by the Presidents approval that they have completely lost focus on what they stand for. Suddenly I see Newt Gingrich and company in Tom Daschle and Dick Gephardt. They are becoming weasels with nothing better to do than pick, pick, pick.. in hopes of denting the President�s armour. For the sake of the betterment of our nation, I hope the Democrats get back to issues� or I hope they lose seats� for no other reasons than to teach them the lesson that I believe the Republicans learned when they attacked Clinton. |
