    China    
President Richard Nixon makes an official visit to China during which he agrees to the eventual withdrawal of U.S. troops from Taiwan. After this visit, many other nations transfer their diplomatic recognition from Taiwan to China.

    Iraq    
Iraq and the Soviet Union sign a treaty of friendship. The two countries agree to cooperate in political, economic, and military affairs. The Soviet Union agrees to continue to supply Iraq with arms.


    Poland    
Relations with the West improve following US President Richard Nixon's visit to Poland.


    Soviet Union/United States    
The period known as detente begins. President Nixon visits the Soviet Union and signs several agremeents with Brezhnev. The SALT I agreements fix the number of ICBMs that can be deployed by the armed forces of the two nations. Other agreements sign cover cooperation in space exploration, environmental matters, and trade.

    Cuba    
Cuba becomes a member of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance (COMECON), the trade association of Communist nations. The Soviet Union agreed to provide financial assistance to Cuba, but it insists that Castro create a Soviet-style bureaucracy that limits his personal influence on policy.


    Egypt    
Sadat asks the Soviet military advisers in Egypt to leave the country in retaliation of the Soviet Union's reluctance to provide Egypt with certain weapons.


    Nicaragua    
An earthquake devastates Nicaragua. Instead of using the international aid that pours in for the people, the Somozas pocket the money. This intensifies the widespread dissatisfaction of the Nicaraguan people with the Somoza government.
