CO-LAB CREATIVE
Bunche School Garden:

The Ralph J. Bunche Garden's Phytoremediation and Wildflower Garden was designed
and initiated in spring of 2002. The project currently demonstrates the use of primarily
native plants to clean up lead contaminated soil in an area on the site. Also, It allows for
the existence of an ecological, educational and aesthetic native "prairie-forest" edge
habitat in an urban distressed Detroit East-Side community. The native garden counts
1200 plants and 23 different native species as of fall 2005.

We run annual workshops in the native eco system, phytoremediation and identifying
native plants (signage workshops) with the children in science classes or in the after
school program. In the spring and over the summer we have volunteer possibilities for
anyone interested in maintaining the garden. Through this hands-on experience the
community and general public can learn about native plants and ecology.
