ALTERNATE VALUES
The theory behind the Mirabilis Project
Art is fun, let us never forget that. If it were not fun, there would little point
in us putting ourselves through the trouble of doing it. But there is another aspect to art that
deserves some consideration, not as much as many artists would give it, but
some nonetheless. That consideration is
the value system expressed by the work itself.
Now let me make one thing clear at the
outset. I am a firm believer in the
concept of Art for the sake of Art.
Those who insist on constantly using their art for the purpose making
some political or other point usually would do well to first consider those on
the top of their heads. And there are
few phrases which set my bloodpressure to rising faster than "politically
correct." Correct by whose
politics? And do I, as an artist, and,
more importantly, as a man, agree with those politics.
That being the case, it will be understood
that the values which may be expressed in the Dr. Mirabilis project do not
agree with any stated value structure and, in fact, are designed deliberately
to violate any structure which our creative brethren wish to impose. Like Milton's Satan, "To do aught good
will never be our task."
The work is constructed from the point of
view of a confirmed evildoer, one in fact who has been doing evil for some
thousands of years. His, and his
associates, first rule is to find out what constitutes the good in any given
social context and then go against it.
And the work recognizes that the concept of good, like the concept of
correct, can differ with the type of people one is dealing with. What is considered right in proper in
darkest Alabama is considered vile and disgusting in civilized Chicago and vice
versa.
The rule then of this project is
therefore, "Seek not the right, but ever do the wrong."
