kingdom bound
Even though The 10th Kingdom did poorly in the ratings, it does have it's fans and over the past two years they have been writing to Simon Moore to let him know just how much his story moved them, as well as asking for a sequel to be made. Here are Simon's responses.

Dear Christine,

Thank you for your letter. I am so glad the 10th Kingdom entertained and touched you. I have been overwhelmed with the response from fans, and it has more than made up for the ratings and some of the reviews. I have been working behind the scenes to try and keep the 10th Kingdom alive. As for the sequel, well ...

There are still outstanding issues to be resolved, but I believe that 10K2 will happen. My personal schedule is very crowded for quite a while, but I can't wait to continue Virginia and Wolf's adventures.

The sequel will be in the form of a mini-series, and I think I am going to call it HOUSE OF WOLVES. It will take place mainly in Red Riding Hoods 2nd kingdom, where Wolves and girls have always been enemies. Now the wolves have been pardoned, but are they to be trusted? It might even feature Wolf and Virginia getting married and of course there is a baby on the way and - oh but that would be giving too much away, too soon ...

Thanks again for your letter, Best wishes, (his signature, Simon) Simon Moore.

Dear Liesha,

Thank you for your letter, card, poem and info - much appreciated.

To answer your question about the meaning of the rose, you got it absolutely right. Snow White believes that Virginia is very important to the kingdoms, and may one day become a Queen herself -that's why Wendell gives her the rose - he realizes that Snow White left it with him to give one day to someone who embodied her spirit. The fact that the rose blossoms IS a hint that Virginia might meet her mother again, but beyond that I don't want to give anything away . . .

Lots of people have been writing to me recently and asking about a sequel. There are still outstanding issues to be resolved, but I believe that 10K2 will happen, and I have been approached to try and come up with possible ideas.

The sequel will be in the form of a mini-series, and will take place mainly in Red Riding Hood's 2nd Kingdom, where Wolves and girls have always been enemies. Now the wolves have been pardoned, but are they to be trusted? It might even feature Wolf and Virginia getting married and of course there is a baby on the way - oh but that would be giving too much away, too soon . . .

Dear Liesha, Feb. 2002

Thanks for your lovely letter about 10K, and I'm sorry it's taken me a while to write back. I am writing a new project and racing to try and get the scripts done in time for my deadline.

I am glad to hear that 10K has encouraged you to write, and I so agree with your view that most TV is formulaic and lacks imagination.

Your website looks great and I am so pleased you are keeping the spirit of 10K alive.

The news about 10K2 is that there is enthusiasm from Hallmark to do some more episodes, but I have not yet had a chance to write the scripts and there is no firm production or transmission date yet.

As some fans know, I was supposed to be directing a movie version of my script 'The Snow Queen' for Hallmark, but they cancelled the production at the last minute, and to be honest I am not sure about my future relationship with the company.

All I can say at the moment is keep the faith, and keep the interest in 10K going. It may be a long time until scripts hit the screen, but I want to find a way to continue the adventures of Wolf and Virginia. In the fickle world of television money and ratings it may still never happen, but I hope there is a way, and the passion of the fans is the thing that will keep the chance of a sequel really alive. I love these characters and this world and I have never experienced such a wonderful reaction to my work before. I really hope I can find a way to carry on the story.

To answer a few questions - My birthday is March 1st. I don't think all the original characters will return in a sequel, but I would not want to write it unless Scott and Kimberly would reprise their roles. Hopefully other cast would also want to make an appearance, but a new series would introduce new characters as well.

The 'bouncy castles' are inflatable rubber castles that you can rent for kids parties and the like, where you can bounce up and down on them like a mix between a play house and a trampoline. You must call them something else in the US?

I am still trying to find a publisher for my book 'Sparks Will Fly' but will let fans know when it is published.

I have a new 6 part series coming out on ABC starting on May 12th (I think) called Dinotopia. It is very different from 10K but also a fantasy . . .

I don't know what would happen to the credits sequence re: the Twin Towers if we did another series . . . Personally I would like it to stay, as a tribute, but it might be too upsetting for people . . .

I don't know all the countries that 10K has been sold to, but I think it's a lot. Apparently it's just been a big hit in Germany. Maybe if it gets good ratings in Europe then the poor NBC figures will not matter and we can make another series.

Got to get back to writing now.

Best wishes and much huff puffing, Simon Moore.

Dear Carly,

Thanks for writing again, and sending me the great mirror! It's fantastic to see people care so much about something I have written.

[Omitted paragraph about Dinotopia] 10k Sequel news- The 18 year old Snow White is nothing to do with 10K. There has been talk of a long running 10K TV series, but as I have said before I am worried it might lose some of it's magic, so I am trying to persuade the powers that be to let me do something shorter. There is a very real chance of a second movie of 10th Kingdom, and the sole reason for that is the extraordinary continuing support for the show. All your letters and campaigns really DO make a difference. I cannot say too much at the moment, but please tell fans of 10K that I hope to have some very good news soon. What do I look like? There was a picture of me on the Sky (UK) website I think, otherwise you'll have to wait for the first 10K convention to find out (hoping I'll be invited, Of course!)Thanks for writing and for keeping 10K alive,

Dear Tina,

Thank you very much for your letter about 10K. Its wonderful when people write to me and say they enjoyed it. As regards to a sequel, the good news is it looks like there will be more 10K.

You have problably read the little bit of info I have already released about what I intend the sequel to be about, but I promise you there will be lots more romance, Wolf and Virginia stuff, and maybe even a wedding as well.

The sequel will be in the form of a mini-series and will problably be called House Of Wolves. It will take place mainly in Red Riding Hood's 2nd Kingdom where wolves and girls have always been enemies. Now the wolves have been pardoned but are they to be trusted?

Thanks again for your letter, Best Wishes Simon Moore

Dear Donna,

Thank you very much for your kind letter about The Tenth Kingdom. I apologise for the delay in writing back but I have been very busy with work.

As you say, it's looking good for a sequel. As for how many sequels I might eventually write, that's really all down to whether or not enough people will watch 10K to ensure its survival. From a personal point of view I would love to continue to add to the story over many years, and I have always imagined that each new chapter' would take us to a new kingdom. So maybe there will be ten in all! Cripes!

I cannot tell you yet when a sequel will be written or made. I have a movie to direct first, but 10K2 will be the first thing I write when I'm free.

I'm glad you like the characters so much. Acorn is a particular favorite of mine, and has an important story line in series 2. (When interviewed about who I would take to Kissing Town for a visit I said Acorn, which made a lot of people think - wrongly - that I was gay! Huff Puff, can't a guy take a dwarf gambling without tongues wagging?)

Hallmark Entertainment are in the process of setting up a website which will have information about series 2, so that would be a good place to go in the months to come if you want to find out what's happening.
Thanks again for writing. Best wishes, (his signature, Simon) Simon Moore

Dear Jackie,

Thank you very much for your kind letter about 10th Kingdom. The series took me over eleven years to get made, so it's wonderful when people write to me and say that they enjoyed it.

The good news is it looks like there will be more 10K. The sequel will be in the form of a mini-series, and I think I am going to call it HOUSE OF WOLVES. It will take place mainly in Red Ridinghood's 2nd kingdom, where wolves and girls have always been enemies. Now the wolves have been pardoned, but are they to be trusted? It might even feature Wolf and Virginia's getting married and of course there is the baby on the way and--oh but that would be giving too much away, too soon....

I was touched by your comments on how much 10K has meant to you. I feel that TV is increasingly presenting us with bland, conventional characters and predictable, unthreatening stories, and when people llike you talk about how 10k had made them think about aspects of their life or happiness then there really is no greater compliment.

And nothing greater that I could aspire to. I find the world crazy and scary and full of hurt but also funny and romantic and full of magic.

Just stay away from the dragon dung beans.

Thanks again for your letter, Best wishes, Simon Moore.

Dear April,

Thank you very much for your kind letter about The Tenth Kingdom. I apologise for the delay in writing back but I have been very busy with work. You asked how 10th Kingdom came to me as an idea- I havn't got a clue!Ideas just come to me all the time, and some of them won't go away. I kept thinking about the notion of trying to re-introduce fairy stories to adults and that was where it all started. The news on a sequel to the 10th Kingdom is that it looks like it will happen, though there may be a wait because I have a movie to direct before I can sit down and write more episodes. Hallmark Entertainment are in the process of setting up a website which will have information about series 2, so that would be a good place to go in the months to come if you want to find out what's happening. The singing ring is sapposed to be annoying as a character, but beautiful as well. My own hoest feeling was that it didn't look appealing enough, but huff puff, that was the engagement ring- wait until you see the wedding ring!!!

I'm glad you like the lying frog- we may not have seen the end of that particular story, even though he exploded, and more will be revealed in series 2. I don't have any pictures of myself, I'm afraid. There used to be a picture of me on the Sky UK website, but I don't know if it's still there.

Thanks again for writing. Best Wishes Simon Moore

Dear Mary Elizabeth,

Thanks for writing. Your letter really made my day. It's great that 10k is still giving people pleasure after all this time.

To answer your questions- I have always wanted to write. When I was at school I didn't do very well in exams and people were always telling me I had a 'vivid imagination' - meaning I should concentrate on the real world more! I sometimes want to go back to those teachers now and say - 'hey, look where my vivid imagination got me!' Anyway, I've always liked fantasy and SF and stuff, but most television is cops and hospitals, so it's very hard to get something like 10k made. As you probably know, it was over twelve years from when I first wrote 10k to finally getting it made. I don't really know where ideas come from. I think of things all the time, but I lose interest in most of them a few days later. Some ideas won't go away, and one of them was what happened after 'Happy Ever After'? Which was one of the starting points for 10k. For me the most important element in fantasy is reality, and I wanted to see what would happen when a young woman from our world became involved in her own fairy story.

I wish the series had been more successful on its first showing, as I'm sure we'd be halfway through series 3 by now! There are, sadly, no immediate plans to do a sequel, but I keep telling people to have faith, as the fans loyalty to the series does have an effect on those in power, and I really want to continue the story I started. One day it will be the right time to do some more. All I can say about the sequel is it begins in a restaurant in New York, run by Wolf and Virginia, and they have a little cub!

Best Wishes, Simon Moore
