October 1996 - My first and only accident with another vehicle. This girl in a 95 buick skylark slammed on her brakes and was trying to make a left hand turn. I was driving too fast and following too fast and railed the back of her car. I settled out of court without getting a ticket for 2000 dollars. This situation was quite funny looking back on it. There were five other people plus myself in my mom's suburban. We had just come from a resturant and everyone had food and drinks in there hands. Once I had come to a stop after hitting the girls car everyone jumped out of the car and ran to the soccer game we were traveling to.
December 1996 - I was driving too fast and fishtailed around a corner in my first car. I hit an embankment and twisted the front end around. Despite crashing at 35mph i was able to drive it home despite the car knocking like crazy. Come to find out, the impact was enough to disconnect a spark plug wire. That, and some work with a steel bar fixed it...kind of.
July 1996 - Was in Goshen CT around 11 at night. Was caught on radar doing 65 through a 35mph zone in the center of town through an intersection. I got very lucky, as the officer let me off with a warning after i explained to him that i was coming back from a game with Matt Werner. Matt's dad at the time was in charge of Police Troop B and happened to be officer Tom Serra's boss.
December 1998 - Was driving northbound on I95 racing some guy in a toyota pick up truck. (Very stupid) We were doing maybe 90 or so when my radar detector went off, unfortunately it was too late and i was pegged doing 83 in a 65. Fine was 130 dollars.
December 1998 - I was driving in Massachusetts when i was caught doing 50 in a 35. I think the cop reduced it to 47mph and the fine was 50 dollars. However, i tried protesting the ticket after the deadline, and ended up arguing with a district attorney. This just made things worse as she doubled the fine because the payment was late.
November 2000 - I was driving back from Westport Ct when i was pulled over for doing 80 in a 65. The fine was 285 dollars. This was on the eve of thanksgiving and the officer didn't seem too happy. I had no time to try negotiating anything with him.
December 2000 - I was driving through Bishopville SC with Wes Mccabe. I was caught doing like 40 in a 25. The officer was very cool and gave me a warning after i explained to him that i was unfamiliar with the area.
August 2001 - Was caught in my bosses truck doing like 62 in a 45. The fine was 130 dollars. This situation wasn't fair either. The officer was sitting off of route 44 in salisbury buried in the bushes. He had a radar gun attached to a wooden extension. Thus, he was able to hide effectively while catching everyone coming down this long hill.
August 2001 - Was hit from behind by a tractor trailer truck on I95 southbound. He was doing 80mph and i was doing 70mph. This time it wasn't my fault and he was issued a warning. I"m in the process of filing a civil suit for the 2000 dollars in damage done to my car.
November 2001 - Was caught on radar doing 68 in a 40 by an undercover cop in a green mustang. I don't think thats fair...or constitutional. Picture this situation, he pulled up next to me in civilian clothes and motioned for me to roll my window down. I did, thinking he was some local guy who was upset that i was driving through his town to fast. So, in response to this i spun my tires and said "whatever buddy." This prompted the officer to put on his lights and pull me over. For some reason he let me off with a warning but said he'd "keep an eye on me."
November 2001 - Was caught again by an undercover cop. This time, by a detective driving a red ford explorer. I blatantly ran a stop sign at or around 40 mph. The ticket said 45, but he was overestimating it i think. Then, he ran my license and it came back revoked from the state of connecticut. This, turned out to be the beginning of a whole new set of problems. Through a more thorough investigation it turns out a bank check i sent to pay for a ticket in November of 2000 never reached wethersfield courts. Thus, they suspended my license without telling me in late august of 2001.
December 2001 - Paid a lawyer 100 dollars and he erased my charges in North Carolina stemming from my last arrest. He used "improper equipment" to erase the failure to stop charge while had the DWL (driving without a license) thrown out. From now on i'm hiring lawyers...as this guys wife is a Columbus County NC assistant DA. Once again proving its who you know.
December 2001 - I was forced to attend a speeding class in torrington ct. Cost 60 dollars and my license was fully reinstated. However, if i get another "moving violation" within the next year i have to attend another speeding class.
Conclusion - Overall i've been pretty lucky. My insurance is still around 800 a year through USAA and my license has been reinstated. I've spent around 1000 dollars in fines and 2000 dollars in damages caused to that girls vehicle. Total, i've spent 3000 dollars which is still a lot of money.
